@asb alternatively: do the same work but just rename computers for AI. “AI supported collaborative work and social AI-ing” is the new CSCW.

Klugscheinirrtum:

The German word for the phenomenon where information acquired from an LLM appears accurate and sensible yet prompts a subtle suspicion or doubt regarding its veracity, often due to hallucinations.

Example: Upon reviewing the essay, he experienced a sense of Klugscheinirrtum, questioning the reliability of some facts that seemed correct at first but might have been subtly distorted.

@rysiek what are the concerns?

andresmh, to random
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

March 2025: first cow-to-human transmission of new bird flu in a factory farm worker infected by cows. Biden lost the 2024 election due to low turnout and fraud in some key states. Dems’ accusations of fraud were laughed at by Republicans, who are now defending the sanctity of the electoral system. Protests during Trump's inauguration turned violent, so DC declared martial law to “prevent another Jan 6.” Natl Guard sent to close universities to install “law and order” after months of protests.

@mathcolorstrees 😭 that was just the beginning of my hopefully fictional story

Four ways Meta plans to monetize LLMs in the long term:

  1. Business chatbots
  2. Ads/paid content in chats
  3. Pay to use bigger models (competing with OpenAI/Anthropic?)
  4. Access to more compute (competing with AWS/GCP/Azure)

The TikTok bill is a…

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@marielgm I’m not sure about that one. If TikTok is forced to sell and they sell to an American company, which seems likely to happen, this would be an even stronger competition to Meta

While content is federated currently, isn’t. And while that doesn’t diminish the decentralized nature of the , having a single identity — that a user fully controls — would make it easier to sign up for multiple apps. My analysis of recent discussions here featuring @evanprodromou, @rabble, @deadsuperhero, @timbray, @osma & others. https://thenewstack.io/one-login-towards-a-single-fediverse-identity-on-activitypub/

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@ricmac I think the challenge is that a single identity is often associated with centralizing power. The AT protocol allows for a single identity based on DNS, i.e., people's identity is on their domain, which is a bit hard to manage for a lot of people, which in turn leads to centralized solutions.

Also, for some people, the ability to have multiple identities is a feature that mitigates context collapse. I think @Mor did some research suggesting that people should have multiple identities.

🚀 Recently, an extension of our GEAR paper was published:

"Gaze-enabled activity recognition for augmented reality feedback"
https://doi.org/10.1016/j.cag.2024.103909

In this extended version, we added feedback to the gaze-enabled so that users get helpful assistance after their current activity was recognized.

Our code and the gaze data are available here: https://github.com/Interactions-HSG/GEAR

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jannis what do you think about the AVP gaze detection?

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@jannis i don't know how it works behinds the scenes but the OS uses gaze for "point and click" It works OK in good lighting conditions but very poorly in darker enviornments

i haven’t set up recurring donations to hci.social because it seems like they got Princeton to pay the bills for now

but maybe it would make sense to support the servers of people i follow and interact with often here? i can make an educated guess about who those instances are, but i wonder if there’s a way to quantify how much traffic/resource usage i generate for my network neighbors. or if a tool to do this could be useful in general?

andresmh,
@andresmh@hci.social avatar

@chrisamaphone love the idea of quantifying the cost of your feed and ways to support it 👌🏽

non-professors might ask, why do professors meticulously put all of their stuff on the websites? is it just for promotion (and bragging?)

yes, but also, i consult my own website like a million times a week because people keep asking me for stuff that is reported there, links and papers and bios and all that stuff.

so, when you make yourself, make it useful to you!

Qualitative researchers: what are common critiques/questions you get in reviews? I was reminded about this document I created last year outlining major critiques and how I have responded but I'm always looking to expand: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jHiWJdkjm6Go683GIxi0tz8l-17rQQpadn9qb7zZDh4/edit?usp=sharing

I currently cover reviewer comments about:

*IRR
*method justification
*sample size
