Any recommendations for new mobile games that are worth checking out (and aren’t “free to play” slot machines)?

Feels like literally years since the App Store was a good place to discover new games.

Finding myself using 0.1s for CSS hover transitions… I’ve always used 0.2s but 0.1s feels snappier while still softer than no transition.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

Which is odd because I’ve always understood that anything under 100ms was imperceptible… but there’s definitely a perceivable difference between a 100ms transition and no transition… I wonder if higher screen frame rates have anything to do with it?

People on Mastodon:
I'm so happy this place is algo-free

People on Threads:
Dear algo, here's my wishlist for things that I want to see in my timeline.

Those two places couldn't be more different.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@bastianallgeier the “dear algo” stuff is so weird. Even if you’re fully in the mindset of wanting an algorithm to show you stuff (I get how that can be useful sometimes), if that’s the way you tell it what you want there’s something messed up.

I used to be enthusiastic about technology.

Was a teen when people made homepages. I could talk to people around the world.

Mobile phones were neat. You could text your friends.

Then with smart phones you could practice language and play genuinely innovative games for a couple of bucks.

I can't remember the last time I was genuinely excited by tech. Maybe it's a factor of becoming a jaded old piece of shit.

“1. Anything that is in the world when you’re born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you’re fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things.”

Articles on our site are easier to read now!

We've increased the default font size and shortened the line length.

Mobile users won't notice a change, but 80% of the traffic to the site is from larger view ports.

https://tosbourn.com/improving-our-line-length/

We are very much not designers, if you are and you have opinions on what I've made ugly, please do share them!

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn I like to do this with a max-width that uses a ch unit, as that takes its measurements from the actual font.

So “max-width: 80ch” means “never let this element be wider than 80x the width of this font’s 0 character”… typefaces all have slightly different widths and spacing, so this means you get a readable measure no matter the font you use.

I always dreamed of being a hacker, doing shady things on the darkweb in my spare time with a black hoodie. Now I can finally be one with my vicious HTML & CSS skills. It feels so good: https://hachyderm.io/@molly0xfff/111404398088326758

I took part in an intensive Irish course at the weekend and went to a higher level then I normally go.

It was head melty but excellent.

I absolutely curse the school system for not teaching proper grammar though, it feels like I'm on the back foot with some of the concepts because I don't fully "get" them for English, let alone Irish.

Quite a few other learners are either much older, and were taught these concepts, or language nerds, so learned them via other languages.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn I still have no idea how to conjugate a verb

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn to be fair I went to a strong Ulster Scots primary school where kids had to be taught to stop writing “i” to mean “yes”.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn hope not. It’s mostly just English with an accent spelt the way it sounds. Writing it down makes zero sense: the “native speakers” aren’t exactly known to be big readers.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn …I say this with all the love in the world, btw.

I genuinely love hearing folks speak it, but pretending it’s anything more academic than a culchie accent is nonsense

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn yeah it’ll pass but it’ll be annoying until it does. Anyone who thinks marketing is about shouting louder than the other guy, rather than building meaningful connections with humans, is going to see this as a new megaphone… completely missing the fact that everyone else has the exact same megaphone at their disposal.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@tosbourn 😂😂😂 the thing is I genuinely thought that was quite poetic, but also was like “ok Toby’s got his thought-leadership voice on…”

I’ve now been on Mastodon properly for a year. While I miss the centralised place where friends, musicians, comedians and others all met in one place, I feel at home here. No algorithms, ads or restrictions on what app I use for it. No intrusions of ‘suggested posts’ in my timeline.

No pressure. It’s very nice.

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@jonhicks the feeling of restored control is so refreshing. Feels so weird to have a platform that isn’t trying to force its own agenda on you.

A quick poll about my personal website: My favorite (and totally silly) feature is the “Change That Font!” toggle at the bottom where the visitor can change the font to four of my favorite fonts.

I want to add or change to some new favorites.

Should I just add the new fonts and have more choices or should I keep it limited?

armstrong,
@armstrong@mastodon.design avatar

@onpaperwings my thinking is that that way the menu itself tells a story, whether you actually use the switcher or not
