the calculator app process has TEN THOUSAND HANDLES open

what the fuck does it need handles to

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@gsuberland @irenes The Windows 11 calculator app is .NET with Xaml and calls WinRT APIs through UWPDesktop so there's a lot of opportunities to leak handles

"Why does ACPI exist" in the beforetimes power management on x86 was done by jumping to an opaque BIOS entry point and hoping it would do the right thing. It frequently didn't. Failed to program your graphics card exactly the way the BIOS expected? Hurrah! Data corruption for you. ACPI made the reasonable decision that, well, maybe it should be up to the OS to set state and be able to recover it. But how should the OS deal with state that's fundamentally device specific?

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@mjg59 The funny thing is that many of the ARM devices that support ACPI boot Linux with device trees. I'm not sure quite why, I'm guessing undocumented extensions or something.
I've found device trees fine enough for embedded devices but really wish more stuff supported ACPI if you would even think about using a distro other than buildroot or yocto

I need to get earbuds or headphones that are comfortable to wear for more than an hour continuously

my ear holes hurt

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@tthbaltazar same. My requirements for headphones are kind of terrible to find though:

  • over-ear
  • reasonable noise isolation
  • doesn't require a battery for wired use (no terrible amplifier inside)
  • replaceable cable (either user or with some soldering, but without breaking the casing)

sounds reasonable but everyone seems to measure noise cancellation but not isolation (I can't use cancellation because it's painful) or wants Bluetooth (which is far more trouble than it's worth). I bought some headphones a while ago that seemed like they would be fine but they have an amplifier when in wired mode, so you pick up a ton of noise and it sounds terrible and quiet.

I'm tempted to just buy a refurbished Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X but it's not super portable

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@eater @tthbaltazar Unpowered playback is essential, not having it suggests that it probably has an amplifier and will degrade sound quality when used wired. Also I'm bad at actually charging things before I leave so I will run out of battery, no matter how long it takes.
I'll look at some reviews of the neo though, thanks!

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@eater @tthbaltazar I live in NYC so I can almost certainly find one, I'll try to look at some point

spending millions on "recycle your plastic to save the earth!" advertising campaigns and packaging print updates followed by "well we could recycle your plastic but that sounds like effort and would probably cost money so we put it on a boat (fuelled by HFO) and dumped it somewhere else" is pretty much exactly how I envisioned the plastic recycling industry working, so I'm glad reporters finally looked into it and confirmed it.

next one to make you sad: glass and paper recycling.

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@gsuberland glass is reused a lot in DE because people are used to it, don't complain about the damaged bottles, and the logistics chain already exists. However, I don't see this much in other countries and I've seen more single-use bottles when I've visited more recently

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@gsuberland DE also feels like the only place that could make plastic recycling work, because they can sort single use bottles by color and type at the return stations. I suspect they haven't managed to though

Getting this out of Andi's thread so that I don't spam her notifications, but … I have to know why this exists.

This is a thunderbolt card for PCs. It has 4 ports on the back: 2 thunderbolt-4 ports, which behave like you'd expect, and let you plug in thunderbolt devices to them.

The other 2 ports are Mini DisplayPort INPUT ports.

It is not a capture card. It appears you cannot process the DP input signal. Only send it to a thunderbolt display.

What? Why?!?

https://www.asus.com/motherboards-components/motherboards/accessories/thunderboltex-4/techspec/

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@glyph If you don't have a DP input port then you need to copy the framebuffer over the limited PCIe bandwidth. This is a problem with thunderbolt external GPUs, where you can get lower performance if you use the internal display

0xabad1dea, to Netherlands

Are you considering visiting the Netherlands because you’re interested in old architecture, canals, windmills, and museums?

COME TO LEIDEN

Leiden is: one intercity train station away from the airport (about 20 mins), just like Amsterdam; has all the historical and artistic value of Amsterdam and none of the sex or drug tourism; is extremely walkable and almost everything you want to see is within 1km of the station, literally everything within 2km; has a highly international population; is much less crowded than Amsterdam any time except the annual celebration of the lifting of the siege in early October. Everything is less tourist-priced as well.

A boat tour in good weather is a god-tier experience. In late spring through midsummer everything is coated in flowers.

I have lived here in Leiden for two years and been extremely happy, attached are photos I’ve taken myself.

artemist,

@erin honestly wide angle close up sounds perfect for certain shots, like "pov your dick", although faces don't look great from that angle so it would be pretty specialized. It almost certainly exists, though finding it might be hard through the SEO spam

Dear software people,

Unicode is older now than ASCII was when Unicode was introduced. It’s not a weird new fad.

It’s complicated but so is the domain it represents. We recognize that we have to think about time zones and leap days and seconds, for instance. And it’s a cleaner abstraction when you aren’t halfhearted about it.

Sincerely,
Charlie

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@isagalaev @vruba I've definitely seen modern software that doesn't handle unicode properly, like spitting on codepoint boundaries. I've also seen things not properly passing a language flag to their renderer, which is important when figuring out which glyphs to use from CJK unified ideographs
