oh no i am having the most italian problem that i (a fake italian) have ever had: i made pasta but forgot i was out of parmigiano reggiano so have to go to the store right now

we're 2 for 2 now on audiophile-adjacent folks offering nonsense ideas about alternate op-amps.

what they think is important:

  • maximum output current
  • maximum output voltage
  • arbitrary resistance values they found on the datasheet

what is actually important:

  • output voltage swing
  • a power-on mute feature
  • quiescent current
artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@jacqueline @jerry507 the analog audio stuff is all in one corner of the board though, so an audiophile that knows what they're doing could probably replace it without having to mess with the digital layout.

(I'm just some rando, not part of the team, but I'm planning on making one myself soon and might make two instead and do some experiments)

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@jacqueline @jerry507 (the experiments I'm planning aren't directly in the audio part, it's testing whether the expensive 100uf mlcc is necessary right next to the output of the ldo, I'll add a substitute footprint so I can try a few things on the second device and monitor rail stability)

Someone should build their own Tangara before a single production unit ships, I think that would be neat 🥺

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@ErinRose I am actually looking into doing this right now with parts mostly from mouser and scavenged from nyc resistor (local hackerspace), pcbs from jlc, and a case printed on nyc resistor's sla printer. I think I can get the price below 100USD + ungodly amounts of my free time.

I'm tempted to base my slight modifications (jtag connectors and silkscreen) off main now and make "case isn't designed for the new mid-mount buttons" a problem for future artemis

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@jacqueline @ErinRose
My plan was to use a stencil, paste, and nyc resistor's cheap and terrible IR reflow oven. I'll ask if I can't figure that out though.

In terms of parts I wasn't sure what length FFC to get, a part number is even better. Thanks!

I'm not sure where to get the LCD, the schematic just says JD-T1800 (and has a really cute symbol). Is there a part number I can use to get just the panel? (if not then there might be some I can steal from a breakout at nyc resistor)

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@jacqueline @ErinRose Nice! good luck with the campaign (well, I guess you have that, so good luck with certification and manufacturing)

I guess now I can continue working on this computer, I need to replace the power switch and I found this 4gb HDD that I want to use because it's very quiet

The computer itself disassembled

@azonenberg @lethalbit I'm surprised how cheap filled via in pad has, epoxy filled and capped is included at JLC in 6 layer, which is $2 for 5 50x50mm boards (price goes up very quickly from there though)

What's U1 for? Are there different voltage levels?

@ktemkin Oh, is that for orientation detection and swapping? I guess that's a thing you want for USB

what’s your opinion on the Anti-Capitalist Software License?

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@ktemkin at some point just make your license "be gay do crime" or even AGPL and big companies will be too scared to copy code

I’ll still need to do some cleanup but I’m getting better at using this chipquik paste. I wish there were a less annoying applicator than this syringe…

I almost feel like I get this enough to show the robotics club kids how to do it. They had better not set anything on fire though.

Time lapse of a tiny hot plate. Messy solder paste pulls components roughly into their correct position but there is too much paste shorting some connections. I will need to use the iron and copper tape to remove some.

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@futurebird That hot plate is pretty nice, but IME it can be kind of dangerous, I've burned myself on it before.

It might be less dangerous if you understand the UI though, I would unplug it and have no warning it was hot

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@futurebird Cool then, have fun! I should probably unclutter my workspace...

under wayland, the compositor gives you a file descriptor for the keyboard layout, and then just sends you raw keycodes

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@tthbaltazar you can enter arbitrary unicode characters by making a virtual keyboard with 1 key then saying that this key means the codepoint you want

me: wants to see my headmate's GPS receiver module in action
headmate: doesn't have an antenna for it
headmate: searches on amazon
headmate: ...
headmate: this [left]
GPS receiver, indoors: [right]

what is this sorcery

image/png

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@astrid @whitequark The GPRMC status says it's invalid and the GPGGA quality indicator says "fix not available" and "0 satellites in use", so the module might be remembering an old fix or using some other protocol for location. Or it might just be weird and actually is working.
I'd guess the output location is in the UK but I have no idea how close it is to correct

Agree or disagree with the following statement:

The United States NSA is secretly in possession of a quantum computer that can break RSA-4096 in a practical amount of time.

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@gsuberland @mcc I believe they can probably crack RSA 1024 with classical computers if they care enough, but currently used key sizes for internet stuff seem fine (a lot of payment stuff is still below rsa 1024)

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@gsuberland @mcc I don't see any reason for them to want to crack EMV cards, which is where I've been dealing with small moduli
Also I was misremembering, I have seen cards under 1024 bit but those have expired so don't really matter anymore, newer cards seem to be at least 1024 bit.

huh, I finally found a bank ATM that will let me pick completely arbitrary note combinations so now I finally have a stack of 100€ notes

artemist,
@artemist@mildlyfunctional.gay avatar

@Scarlet Do they not normally do that? In the US generally bank ATMs will have 3 or 4 denominations and let you choose an arbitrary set of them (I've seen 5, 10, 20, 50 and 10, 20, 100). Other ATMs are often 20 only

Police nabbed a graffiti artist attempting to flee the scene of committing this (picture) adorable art in the harbor of Visby, Gotland, the large island just outside southeastern mainland Sweden.
The 27-year-old was prosecuted for vandalism, with the prosecutor demanding a fine.

Police's interrogation records said e.g. that "His intention is to offer free art to passersby." and... the District Court of Gotland... agreed.

The court's ruling states that no harm has been proven and that the artist "on a gray and cracked concrete façade which is the short end of a loading dock, has depicted a lamb.", that "The way in which X has illustrated the lamb testifies to an artistic work carried out with a certain amount of artistic and technical skill." then finally "According to the District Court's opinion, the beauty value of the cracked concrete façade - in purely objective terms - has increased through X's painting." so the 27-year old artist was acquitted by the court, which also ruled that the police had must return the spray cans they had confiscated.
