sometimes a time vortex will open and I'll find myself explaining to my 14yo self how things are going currently in easy to understand terms, like "oh I found out about the latest mass shooting from an alert on my portable hand computer" and he just bursts into terrified tears
I think if your mom dies at a hospital the least the hospital can do is give you a shirt that says "my mom died at [hospital] and all I got was this crappy shirt and all her medical bills"
@RickiTarr most corporations function very similarly to the borg, I think, but the verbiage is far different. assimilation is "orientation." the hive mind is "our happy family of employees"
@RickiTarr Succession comes to mind. I didn't watch the final season, so there may be some insane redemptive arc I missed, but I kind of doubt it. Which I think was the point -- everyone within proximity of that kind of wealth and power ultimately loses the spark of humanity in favor of self-interest, apparently
New Year has always been accompanied by complex feelings for me. Time has always felt like it was moving too fast, even as a child, and New Year is a stark reminder that another year has come and gone.
A lot of people use this moment to think about how they'd like to change, New Year, New You, but inevitably we are still ourselves. In the end though, I'm the worst person of all, an Optimist. I really believe that things can and do get better, and in the case, of New Year, New You, maybe the old you is pretty good already, and you just did the best you could last year, and you're gonna do your best this year too.
Our time is short, weird, wonderful, heartbreaking, and fascinating. I'm here for it, and I'm incredibly lucky to have this group of people to chat with, empathize with, and learn from. I'm ringing in the New Year with gratitude.
Anyway, as usual that was verbose, but please, tell me your thoughts on the New Year, Anything you want to talk about is fine!
@RickiTarr I'd like to say I'm an optimist, but I'm really a pessimist trying to force myself to see the bright side of things. I'm hopeful for this year, though. Fingers crossed, knocking on wood, etc.
@RickiTarr the electric slide is inescapable out this way, but I'd hesitate to call it my favorite
at my cousin's wedding, they had karaoke and one of the bridesmaids made an attempt at the divinyls' "I touch myself" that was ill-conceived and -delivered and it still haunts me
