CEO: We need to cut costs.

Accountant: Okay. We paid you $50 million last year. We spent $10 million on your private jet flights and luxury hotel accommodations. For some reason you are being paid $1 million for this 45 minute meeting.

CEO: I see. Who's that in the hallway?

Accountant: That's Greg. He is the only thing keeping this company from falling apart. We pay him in nickels and Grubhub gift cards.

CEO: Fire Greg.

can only speak for myself: standing up for what i legitimately want wasn't something my parents or school taught me - in fact they both did quite the opposite.

I dont know who needs to hear this.. but you can actually disagree with someone, have a debate, remain peaceful, and if you still disagree in the end you dont have to actually rage quit and block them. You can.... wait for it.... just disengage and walk away.

Not everyone has to agree with you about everything.

@freemo @josemanuel i know it’s just a figure of speech but i think it’s not good to call this behavior childish. children have to (and are eager to) learn how the world works. they engage in such make-believe games as a means of learning about reality. it’s the polar opposite of these people which have reduced the world to a delusion.

due to this i wondered i cursive handwriting would be better for people with dyslexia, and it seems it would.

now i wonder if the push for handwriting in antiqua (or how writing individual letters is called) is to sell more therapy and stuff to dyslexic children.

If you are well organized, it is a healthy trait. no one would say you are "on the OCD spectrum".. but when that trait gets out of hand we would say you have OCD, and likely would be diagnosed as such.

I see (autism) ASD and ADHD as much the same way. Most people diagnosed with it who are high functioning dont really have it at all. It is just a personality trait and all in all a positive one. high-functioning ASD are just people without social hangups, good. And people with ADHD who are high-functioning are largely just amazing multi-taskers.

The harm in putting people on a spectrum is they see themselves asa diseased, broken, something that needs "consideration.. they arent, in most cases in the right proportions these "diseases" are in fact just super powers, things more people should wisht hey have really.

@freemo didn't want to play down the usefulness! :) i only think all people have special traits or talents which help them to perform especially well on some tasks or in some environments. imho that's why humans were so successful settling in wildly different places :)

Last week i read a few articles about scientific studies that seem to show that

  • people forget everything they learn in school, unless they already know it from general osmosis
  • people also forget everything they learn in university, but it doesn't matter because people don't go there to learn but to get a degree
  • scientists (especially sociologists) do not understand statistics, not even statisticians
  • the likelihood of a paper passing peer review is only lightly correlated to the quality of the paper

I guess the first thing explains why it seems to matter so little (after a decade) whether you send a kid to a regular school or do something like homeschooling or montessori. Although it's hard to say if this applies to all kinds of schooling or just to the current degree-based system.

bonifartius,
@bonifartius@qoto.org avatar

@billiam @lain yeah, search engines really went to shit in the last years. really hard to find non mainstream stuff as everythimg gets lowered and "ℹ️ this was flagged misinformation by independent fact checkers" and so on.

Q. Anyone have a list of other server instances blocking QOTO?

(those seeing us as spam or hostile, policy mismatches etc).

@freemo

General thoughts:
Not blaming QOTO for my low interactions (!) or engagement here but I do have that feeling it might be less and less with others too, as we lean towards certain things more or specialise often, but also maybe the spam accounts sometimes get to other instances (even though we do good job stopping that after being reported) and they think it's like we don't stop them.

Perhaps some policy differences also?

Hard to see and measure being blocked so I wanted to a list of instances blocking QOTO and would be handy not for me to guess we are somewhat isolated (by nature and by misunderstanding QOTO).

bonifartius,
@bonifartius@qoto.org avatar

@freemo @freeschool sure, makes sense!

i already like the current featureset, pinning other timelines is very cool. the colored follow icons are also very handy!

thanks for putting in the work and money :)

natto for breakfast! it came out fine despite the yogurt maker running a bit hot. i think i'll have to come up with a better solution, it seems broken. i found one on ebay which describes natto making in the manual, but uses special glasses.

putting it in individual bags for freezing was the right decision, much more easy to handle.

😬 (bird flu)

bonifartius,
@bonifartius@qoto.org avatar

@zleap @inquiline clearly bird flu is the next in line - we already had a swine-flu scare after all. it even had it’s own rushed and flawed vaccine, pandemrix. at least back then a handful of cases was enough to properly investigate and stop things, compared to ten years later.

if anything these animal pathogens tell us something about how we should and shouldn’t do agriculture. maybe keeping thousands of the same animal in close proximity isn’t that clever.

It seems to be that, now the UK GE has been called, the war in Ukraine and Israel has stopped, global warming and associated climate / weather as stopped. Along with all the other things that are happening worldwide.

If anyone has any reports of abusive moderator behavior from past members please sent it to me in private, I am compiling a portfolio of such incidents.

In particular abuse from @wild1145 / @wild1145 . I also am concerned with anyone from the community or fellow minorities who were mistreated by moderation staff, if there is any issue specific to those communities I want to make sure it gets looked at.

While all the big companies are crunching on thousands of CPUs and GPUs to help you give you an AI assistant that can give you a chart I am writing shell scripts using gnuplot to feed my ledger data into.

Hahaha, this is so ridiculous. The contrast of it alone.

bonifartius,
@bonifartius@qoto.org avatar

@Anachron what really annoys me is that GPUs with their massive parallelism would enable really cool algorithms but nobody is researching those anymore as all the (grant) money is in AI memery. we really live in the most bullshit future imaginable.
