Starting to understand why Mastodon has a tepid reputation with media and popular social figures.

It's not about complexity.

Mastodon doesn't provide the mass audiences and sponsorship opportunities needed to sustain profitability. That's it. Its either considered a non-starter, or a threat to their current income stream.

So I got a code idea stuck in my head and couldn't let it go. I wanted to learn how to create a client side plugin using . I didn't know what I was getting myself into. 😅 But I did it! Will write up a blog entry soon and share the code.

The plugin highlights and sparkles a specific phrase you identify within all posts, making it easier to identify when a specific topic is being discussed within your timeline.

Showing the plugin in action, the timeline has the term "Calckey" highlighted with the sparkling MFM effect applied.

If you’ve never been to the Denver CO Casa Bonita, you may have seen it on a South Park episode. A dining experience with cliff divers, gorilla chases and sub par Mexican food, all mixed with the smell of chlorine and sopapillas.

During the pandemic, it unfortunately closed down and looked like it wouldn’t come back. 😔 But the creators of South Park actually bought it and it’s being renovated! Can’t wait to visit again. 😅

I’ve often wondered why sites from Japan were so image heavy, and at least the first part of this article makes some interesting points for a westerner’s perspective on the subject.

Is it really true that much of it relates to not having enough completed font sets necessary to utilize them in html designs?

Just a reminder, if you're seeing spam, be extra careful when blocking the offending account. It's easy to block the whole domain by accident, and you're not going to get those followers/people you followed back easily.

@stefan Check out Topiary by @davidgarywood , an app made to manage your followers…but it can also serve as a sort of backup for your current follows and followers. Not an actual feature of the app, just happens to serve an additional purpose!

@kylewritescode Very similar. You can bring over followers, following, lists, blocks and mites. You can move your posts over, too, backdated. At the moment I think media attachments are excluded from the transfer.

@kylewritescode The post import has been improved lately. You are limited to two imports per month. Atomic is actually testing it out for the team, I think. If Calckey can import their posts, yours should be a breeze. 😹Might wait to see how that goes.

if you had only one tool outside your IDE to assist you with daily tasks, what would it be? What's the first thing you install on a new machine?

For the past....decade...mine has been NotePad++. It's chock full of helpful text manipulation tools that I wouldn't be able to live without, especially in my early SQL Server days. Not to mention a healthy plugin community.
