@Gargron A US based 501(c)3 lets you accept US donations that are tax deductible. It doesn't grant any magic powers to Americans, or tech companies, or even Silicon Valley.

Being able to accept donations from US citizens in a tax deductible way, gives Mastodon more chance of surviving without needing to resort to VC driven commercialization, or block chain schemes. This is a good thing.

I get that people are (rightfully!) suspicious of any change, especially those that involve boards.

@mekkaokereke @Gargron People having a negative reaction seems like such a disingenuous take. So many other projects are 503(c)s (Node, Apache, Rust, Python, LINUX, etc), nobody seems to have a problem with those. But social networks having already been proven to be susceptible hostile takeovers by malicious billionaires, this is the one that people object to?

I do not buy for a second that people are objecting in good faith.

Now that y'all have seen the differing career impacts, media coverage of, and societal reactions to, Black women being accused of plagiarism (Claudine Gay) and white women being accused of plagiarism (Neri Oxman)...

you can understand why I say that widely used automated plagiarism detecting software that advertises a false positive rate of 1%🤦🏿‍♂️, is devastating for Black students.

Another flavor of: in a racist country, being falsely accused has devastating consequences

@mekkaokereke Not to mention the base rate falacy.

UCLA has about 45k students. Studies show the actual plagiarism rate is about 3.5%. That means about 1500 students at UCLA cheat.

An error rate of 1% means that 435 innocent students will be accused of cheating, and 13 people who are cheaters won't get caught. So you have almost 2000 people accused of cheating, and a full 22% of those are innocent.

Suddenly a 1% error rate isn't looking so hot.

sigh we're still talking about this I guess...

Jamie Foxx didn't say something anti-semitic. He said something people thought was anti-semitic.

Because they weren't familiar with his phrase, and he wasn't familiar with the anti-semitic dog-whistle.

He apologized for being misunderstood, not for being anti-semitic.

Yes, it is very good that he clarified.

@mekkaokereke

> his apology was appropriate, even though there was no intent

These are the only apologies that matter, right?

Someone who didn’t intend harm, recognizes that harm was done, and tries to make it right. These are good people. (e.g., Jamie)

Someone who does intend harm, even if they feel bad after the fact (but especially if they don’t) and apologizes, is toxic and abusive. An apology is not enough and they will almost certainly repeat this behavior.

Growing up in Arizona: 120 sucks but whatever.
Growing old in Texas: Furiously googling real estate in Wyoming.

@paul yesterday Canada had the most northerly 100° temps in history. Pretty soon you’re going to need to move in next door to some elves.

Is it okay, as an English speaker, to use feminine when referring to a ?

brbennett,
@brbennett@hachyderm.io avatar

@eyesquash Gotta say, my perception is that it feels very misogynistic when I see people equate feminine identities with inanimate objects.

brbennett,
@brbennett@hachyderm.io avatar

@eyesquash I mean, I get that. But it is still an inanimate object. And I think the stronger thing to consider is how others, especially women will perceive your words in a public setting. When talking to a single person, if you knew it would offend them, would you still say it?

brbennett,
@brbennett@hachyderm.io avatar

@eyesquash in Spanish, one would say “la guitarra”, which is feminine, but that’s how the language works. If it were me, I would probably say “mi guitar” instead, which is technically wrong, but in Mexico and southwestern US (I live in soCal), there is a lot of Americanisms mingled in with Spanish. It would probably fly here, but maybe not in Spain. I’m not really familiar with the culture there.

Still bummed that Deliveries got discontinued. The FedEx app is truly awful. UPS is less worse but still pretty janky.

brbennett,
@brbennett@hachyderm.io avatar

@paul Deliveries was discontinued? I still use it and have a sub.

The situation with FedEx sucks, but otherwise I still love it.

Happy !

I'm still not talking about Black history. I'm still talking about white US history.

Q: Why do Black kids not do well in school? Is it because their dads are uninvolved and uncaring parents? Bill Cosby and Herschel Walker told me that, and they are good and wise men that we should listen to! It's Black dads' fault! Boo Black men!

A: No. Black kids only do poorly in school in extremely racist countries.

@peladocollado @Lironah @mekkaokereke I only had one growing up in San Diego subs. Of the two predominantly black schools I went to, I don’t remember there even being another black teacher other than her.
