Who's got the best advice on a11y of <dialog> element? I might get a message from server and need to say to user "data has changed, refresh the page". If I just invoke a <dialog> is that enough? Does it need to be anywhere specific in the DOM?

@aardrian Ah! Thanks old chum. I thought I was losing my residual marble.

@marcus Cheers, that's what I thought. But I haven't really looked at it for ages, so my memory might be lying

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@aardrian Daft Q, but I'm not seeing where you set "inert on the page container that is a peer to the dialog."

Bagged myself a 2ndhand CD of best of Ladytron. Mesmerising stuff. (These days, a used CD is cheaper than the mp3 download of an album, and I get to choose my own compression/ format.) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPZoaGqLGpQ&list=PLPzD8o8WyVxgFCt0BpsXd0Op0BFHjOtzs

@patrick_h_lauke But what do you do with the CDs afterwards? I can't bring myself to bin them so they're piling up

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@aardrian Whereas all 3 of us retain our youthful looks and zest, so can easily be mistaken for Gen Z in a darkened room, I actually own numerous CD players, some more than 20 ears old. @patrick_h_lauke

@Edent Can't remember the details of the jQuery API but, yes. In the same way as Flash had keyframes etc, and JQ had querySelector which came to real JS. Good, innit?

So far today, I've had a fight with Microsoft Teams (which forgets which camera I use, and gets tangled up with an ancient account I don't use) and something called Dynamic 365, which just won't let me in. Unfamiliarity with the world of Microsoft, or are these terrible products?

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@FreakyFwoof @tink That surprises me. Whatever one might think of Microsoft's UX and elegance, they tend to be pretty good on accessibility.

AI bots are so good at mimicking the human brain and vision that CAPTCHAs are useless https://qz.com/ai-bots-recaptcha-turing-test-websites-authenticity-1850734350
"The bots’ accuracy is up to 15% higher than that of humans" - so get rid of them from your sites; they're often an accessibility disaster for actual humans.

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

In 2019, 63% of UK web users with access needs cited CAPTCHAs as a barrier to using retail sites (PDF: https://www.clickawaypound.com/downloads/cap19final0502.pdf)

I currently use Crunch for my accounting etc. But I'm finding the web app increasingly clunky and geared towards how accountants think, rather than how I think. (And I don't want to spend £100/month to think like an accountant). Is there an alternative i can export my data to?

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@tosbourn I can't be arsed with all the bank reconciliations and recording the same damn thing in multiple places and the language that requires me to understand accountancy

Hello & people - I have a conundrum.

My blog posts' is, essentially:

…

Content
…

Given that "div is the element of last resort" - what should I use instead?

It isn't a sub-
(and wouldn't have a separate heading).

The
isn't part of the articleBody (I think).

I guess it is a
?

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

@Edent yeah, if you have an antipathy to
.
