We’re in Rhodes and have been evacuated due to the wildfires.

We’re safe in a hotel which has been turned into a temporary refuge.

By all accounts, 30,000+ tourists and locals have been displaced in the last 24 hours and let me tell you, it’s been fucken scary.

We went from our hotel being turned into a refuge to jumping on the back of a dump truck in the middle of the night, to walking for hours in pitch black to finally getting picked up by a coach to take us to where we are now.

The view from near our hotel this morning. Thick plumes of smoke over an otherwise perfect sunny day
A poorly lit photo of the wildfires as seen from outside our hotel room, just before evacuation. The fire was around 1.5km from us as the time and was completely out of control
A shot early in the evening which I told my partner “it might just be a sunset”. Turns out it’s massive fucken flames

I'm thinking of getting an electric and a seat for the back for my 2.5 year old daughter to sit in - and this 250E looks very appealing.

But what do the of the fediverse think? Especially people who cycle with their kids on the bike. What's the verdict on this ?

Should I give the new cat the proper, lady-like name of Amber, or should I choose chaos by calling her Apricat? 👀

congratulations to the amazon email team, who manage to send HTML emails that don't (correctly) set their foreground/background colours... leading to an unreadable email when mail client is in dark mode. hint: if you define background:var(--body-bg)... it helps if those custom properties are also defined somewhere in the email's markup...

Sadly, few FullStack devs read classic literature, or they'd know that "Tailwind" was a 19th century euphemism for "a fart". Eg, in Jane Austen: "Miss Bennett, shall we take a turn around the garden? The air in this ballroom has become somewhat rancid". "My apologies, Captain Cadbastard; when you whirled me round in the last Cotillion, I confess a small Tailwind eked out from beneath my 17th petticoat". (Pride and Prejudice, chapter 7)

brucelawson,
@brucelawson@vivaldi.net avatar

Pride and Prejudice is all about the mindset of anachronistic developers who think that the only language they know is the only one that counts (the 'pride') and also that "CSS isn't really a language" (prejudice). See the famous opening: "“It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a dev not in possession of a basic knowledge of the foundational languages of the Web, must be in want of a framework and cumbersome
build process.”

I wonder how many really good job candidates get lost to automatic sifting, which is trained on ‘traditional’ CVs and so inherently biased. It’s the modern-day acceptable revamp of the dreaded “culture fit’. (I'm not moaning; as a middle-aged white cis straight male, I get rejected because of my own glaring failings.)

Accessibility widgets are not reducing lawsuits. "The number of lawsuits against companies using accessibility widgets increased slightly in 2023. We found 414 suits this year, compared to 336 in the first half of 2022 and 316 in the first half of 2021. This trend suggests that accessibility widgets may not provide sufficient protection against litigation." https://blog.usablenet.com/web-and-app-ada-lawsuits-6-trends-so-far-in-2023
