burrito,

A while back I sealed and reinsulated my house and replaced all the duct work. It made a massive difference on my electric bill as my house’s HVAC system is a heat pump. I did all the work myself and got a rebate from the electric company and it ended up costing me about $1000 out of pocket. I did some calculations back then and my payback period was only a couple of years so it has been paying me back for quite a while now. It was one of the best things I have ever done.

burrito,

You could run jellyfin on your desktop and use that to stream shows to your tablet. Or VLC works for connecting to network file shares and you could play from that.

burrito,

As someone who switched from a Walmart bike to a carbon fiber bike I can definitely say there’s a huge difference. Everything on the carbon fiber one is much higher quality. The gear ratios is has make sense, whereas I could never find the right ratios on the cheap one. Switching speeds is much faster too as I can be pedaling hard while changing gears and I know it’s going to do exactly what I tell it. Finding parts is very easy compared to the Walmart one. Anytime something broke on the old one it was difficult or impossible to find a replacement. With a much nicer bike you can get parts for it easily so I can keep it in top shape for a long time. There are many other benefits as well.

burrito,

It’s true they don’t. I was trying to point out some of the differences between a real bike and a Walmart bike. For the frame I love how it rides, I love how lightweight it is, I like how strong it is, and I love how repairable the bike is.

burrito,

Came here to say Wings of Fire. Absolutely fantastic series. Thanks for the other recs I’ll check those out.

burrito,

When you get new tires or have them rotated you’re supposed to take them back for tightening after 50-100 miles. Perhaps they ought to update the documentation to take them to the mechanic for a few ugga duggas after a couple flights.

burrito,

They were the only company that made price stickers that could be easily removed. Nobody else can figure it out.

burrito,

I don’t understand it either. Unfortunately, I know quite a lot of people in my personal life that are terrible with money like that. A lot of people grew up in families with terrible financial sense and then they bring that with them into adulthood. Some people eventually figure it out but by that time they’re pretty late on getting their retirement planning going.

burrito,

I’d take weed over any politician any day of the week.

burrito,

Kinda like how VLC is based out of France because there’s no software patents?

burrito,

Any appliance made by Samsung is pure garbage. I just got rid of one of their dryers and I’m very glad to have it gone.

burrito,

All the parts they used internally are made to be as cheap as possible. The rollers that support the drum, and the belt tensioner, use low quality bushings that wear out prematurely. The extra fiction the parts caused would cause the belt to fail too. I’d have to tear the entire thing apart every two years or so and replace these parts to keep it running, far more often than I’d have to repair any other dryer brand. The sensor dry cycle on it never properly dried the clothes, and the steam function on it didn’t work very well either.

A friend of mine has a Samsung dryer, washer, fridge, dishwasher, and microwave. He hates all of them with a passion for similar reasons.

I don’t hate everything Samsung as I’m quite happy with their tablets and watches, but I’d never purchase another one of their appliances.

burrito,

I have a friend that fell for a scam. They actually called me up to ask for money for “insurance” on a dog they had never seen and wanted to get. I told them it was a scam and that there was no way I was going to lend them the money. They said goodbye, called somebody else up for money, and got it. In the end they got scammed and didn’t get a dog like I told them.

burrito,

Phtorec can scan the drive and try to recover your remaining data. I’ve used it in the past to get files back from dying drives. Linky www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec

burrito,

I hope the Nude Raider mod gets updated too.

burrito,

I started playing Control a couple of weeks ago and I’ve found it to be a lot of fun so far. I’m currently at the power plant so I may not be to the frustrating point yet. I definitely see your point about getting lost. Even with all the signs and the map it can be difficult to navigate at times, though it is becoming a bit easier as I am more familiar with navigating the game.

I am about to reach that point with Resident Evil 4 (2023). I’m at one of the first levels in the village and I’ve spent probably two hours trying to get past this one level, only to die every attempt so far. I think I’m up to at least ten attempts now and it’s driving me nuts.

burrito,

Mailx is exactly what I use to send email from servers for cron jobs. Works great.

Yo, what was your first computer? How old were you, where and how did you get it, what did you do with it, etc.

TL;DR It was an old Wang system, 286 processor(I think, anyway), with no hard drive, a 5.25" floppy drive, and a lovely green monochrome monitor. I didn’t have it long enough to reach the point where I could have identified the actual hardware/specs....

burrito,

Are you me? I had a 386 just like that. Mine was the SX so no math coprocessor and it had 1 MB of RAM and later I upgraded it to 4 MB. I also used mine to write a bunch of programs in qbasic. I learned a ton on that machine. SimCity 2000 was also a lot of fun on it, though it ran much faster on the Pentium machine I got later.

burrito,

Spot on here. I just get the cheapest Great Value powdered detergent and it works amazingly well.

burrito,

When I had kids I decided that I was going to live a healthy lifestyle to serve as a good example for them. Finding ways to exercise with them has been a lot of fun and then it just snowballed into me exercising on a very regular schedule and now I’m in the best shape of my life. Now it feels really weird if I have a day where I’m not doing some kind of exercise activity.
