Ok we all wanna bring back mammoths with cloning, but there are some weirdos I think we should also consider.

PROCOPTODON: giant pug-faced kangaroo with forward-facing eyes. We think it walked instead of hopping. Early Australians met it & I want to feel what they felt

For the first time since tracking Tor network exit fraction without a ContactInfo (Jan 2018) it is now below 1%.

That is a good first milestone towards requiring a valid ContactInfo.

ceresbzns,

@nusenu
For those who haven't been following along (i.e. me), is requiring valid contactinfo for exit nodes a way to fight deanonymization attacks on the network?

This is an ignorant question but where does one find software that runs on BSD? I don't think I've ever come across it on github. Do you have to compile everything from source?

ceresbzns,

What do you use the BSD OS for vs the others?

PogoWasRight, to random

Well, that was different:

I was drafting a post for databreaches.net and got a big BLOCKED message telling me that I had been blocked from accessing the site, and maybe I used some word or did something that triggered it, and if I thought that was wrong, I should write to the administrator.

It also wiped out the post I was working on.

I think trying to embed posts from this platform may not work out for me. 🤷‍♀️

Now excuse me while I go write to myself to complain about myself...

TIL, it costs $13 to send $20 to your wallet. And if you want to sell, it costs $427 to sell one BTC. That is 1.5%, which is on level with management fees of an expensive mutual fund. Just bear this in mind if you're ever tempted to invest in

ceresbzns,

@n0body
These are astute remarks, and correct, but I would argue the comparison doesn't quite fit.

Mutual funds charge an annual management fee, so you're paying that cost every year you hold. By contrast, crypto costs nothing to hold outside of the up front cost of a hardware wallet ( less than $100), and maybe a home node if you're really dedicated.

Further, a 1-3% spread is extremely expensive for an asset class you expect to appreciate or yield at maybe 5-6% a year (less for bond funds). Crypto goes up or down by 80% in a year, at which point that 3% spread you pay up front is pretty diminutive compared to any capital gains or losses.

What bothers me with libertarian Bitcoin maximalists is that like gun people, their agenda for society often is that trust shouldn’t be necessary.

Instead of addressing root causes of shootings or fraud, they only want a very individualist solution: be ready to shoot the people you meet or threaten you, have immutable money transfers.

ceresbzns,

@fj

It's a myopic perspective, to be sure, and often is just a shallow front for reifying the systemic power imbalances that already favor white cis dudes over everyone else.

What I will grant is that firearms and private keys moves the locus of control into the span of the individual. Shootings and the macroeconomy are massive problems way outside the scope of any person or even local community. But then comes along the bitcoin and guns crowd, selling the promise that you, the individual, has the power to create some level of security for yourself by equipping yourself with a few grand worth of gear and some education.

It's a false promise, but taken at face value, I can understand the appeal. It's part of why I appreciate the efforts of leftists out there to promote the alternative, more pro-social modes of empowering people to act and thus feel more secure, e.g., mutual aid societied, mutual defense networks, etc.

By contrast, the messages of US liberals is so agonizingly bad: give more power to vicious cops, more power to muppet-armed regulators. Doesn't feel like a mobilizing call to action

Does anyone know of an online brokerage that offers decent 2FA (hardware token or TOTP app) for account security?

I've used Fidelity and Merrill Lynch and the best they offer is suboptimal 2FA factors like SMS or email. Fidelity just tried to railroad me into using voice authentication.

Their entire security model seems centered around

  1. social proof, and
  2. users noticing fraud and reporting it in a timely fashion so they can hit a big red undo button.
