Software dev. Well, software dev-ish, these days. Also, music, motorsport, films, and https://hachyderm.io/@leymoo.

Currently: building software and cloud architectures for boating.

Previously: a lot of stuff in software, feel free to ask or check my site. Which is now less terrible.

Profile pic: me, lit with purple disco lighting and with a disco ball behind one shoulder.

Header pic: a view of a street in Funchal, Madeira with nearby rooftops and a tree, and the ocean in the distance about 1.5 km away.

About by PCalc for Vision Pro is now in the hands of App Review, so we shall see what happens next!

Making screenshots for visionOS apps is tough, particularly for a fully immersive one like this. Getting the horizon completely level is certainly a challenge.

@jamesthomson I mean this in the very best way, but these shots remind me of how I games used to look on my Acorn. Obviously they didn’t actually look anywhere near this good, but the clean polgonal look reminds me of them.

Bob’s Burgers is one of my all-time favorite shows and I’m so glad it’s back on the air. To celebrate I’ve whipped up three new wallpapers of Jimmy Jr., Zeke and the adorable Regular Sized Rudy (not to be confused with Pocket Sized Rudy 😂).

This is the 6th volume of BB wallpapers and I’m sure they’ll be more eventually but for now it’s hard to choose just one for my Lock Screen! Subscribe on https://patreon.com/iconfactory to get all 6 volumes, have fun and enjoy the show! 🍔

It’s scheduled for 2am my time.

How about you navigate that conflict first?

LOVE this

instead of the AI hallucinating, it's a human, imagining that a novel is merely a generated collection of words

rather than an expression of human experience, lensed through the perspective of the author, revealing something that a mere recitation of fact cannot

What's useful about LLMs is also what makes them tedious: all they can do is average things already written, already known.

Applying this to novels seems like a great way to read something tedious, never fresh.

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo do people just… not understand the meaning of the word “novel”? This might produce a book, but it’ll sure as shit not produce anything novel.

Tesla has texted or called me at least 10 times in the last month to offer incentives if I lease a new car with them after my Model Y ends at the start of May. They are quite litterally desperate.

If I chose to re-up with them I could get quite a deal. I’ve told their reps multiple times I won’t support Tesla as along as Elon Musk is the CEO of the company. Gotta wonder how long Tesla shareholders will put up with him in charge. https://mastodon.online/@electrek/112201815082910986

@gedeonm fwiw, my parents have an Ioniq 5 and it is a truly delightful place to sit. Extremely comfortable seats, soft ride, great airy cabin, really neat trim, sensible shape trunk. Only complaint is from my dad (who is 5’8 and very slim) that the seats aren't quite supportive/bolstered enough for him.

@danilo Casablanca (Dolby Vision + Atmos release)

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo I suppose if Mad Max: Fury Road can come with an HDR B&W release, then it’s entirely fair that Casablanca can.

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo I have to admit I’ve never actually seen it. I find almost all movies before about 1965 basically unwatchable due to the Very. Stilted. Acting. Style. that was in vogue for that period. I’ll put it on the list as something to at least stare at!

Wondered why my download speed was a bag of wank...

... Sonoma's VPN was on.

sigh

Make sure you disable it if you're doing big internets stuffs, you can always bung it back on after.

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jyoti I wonder if your internet provider is doing something crap there, rate limiting or throttling VPN traffic. I’ve found Private Relay to be so fast that I don’t notice it, on gigabit cable in Portugal.

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@Jyoti @notthatdelta they’ve always been extremely aggressive with “traffic shaping” from what I’ve seen when I lived in the U.K. and had friends on Virgin.

Could also be that the VPN is causing your connection to skip Virgin’s caches and fast paths/peers to Apple’s services. I’ve seen that too in the past with other things.

danilo, to VisionPro
@danilo@hachyderm.io avatar

I have one point upon which I was simply dead wrong about :

I completely underestimated its potential for watching movies.

You would need tens of thousands of dollars just to remodel your house to get anything close to the scale and image quality you’re seeing here.

The movie theater business is fucked as HMD’s of this pixel density become more common and affordable.

cloudthethings,
@cloudthethings@hachyderm.io avatar

@danilo also, I have a pretty good home cinema setup: 83” 4K HDR OLED, 5.1.2 Atmos surround, a proper home cinema receiver etc. and the cost of replacing or upgrading any of this stuff has gone through the roof: the speakers are at least 2x what I paid back in 2016, and the receiver more like 3x.

I’ll be seriously reconsidering what I do next time around. The only catch is the shared experience, and I feel they can solve some of that in software.

@jonhicks On your (excellent) post about Bandcamp: you can get the iTunes store to download purchases in DRM-free AAC 256 kbps (M4A file) if you set downloads to "High Quality (AAC 256 kbps)" per this screenshot. It's annoying, but has worked consistently for me.

Of course, I still much prefer Bandcamp for its payment model, sensible pricing, vastly better options for download formats etc... but in a pinch, I'll take 256kbps AAC over nothing.

@thisismissem MS SQL Server has a native bit type that’s accessible just like a field but packed up to 8 per byte for storage. Very convenient and avoids having to do any bit maths. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/sql/t-sql/data-types/bit-transact-sql?view=sql-server-ver16
