    @fzer0 @carbon_compound irgendwie hab ich offenbar glück mit meinen latifundien (1500m² wald), die fichten schaun alle recht gsund aus, auch rundherum schaut's ned so schlimm aus wie auf photos aus anderen gegenden zu sehen...

    @yuvipanda I'd been running kodi for android on a Nexus 10 tablet, but that's been bgetting too slow over the years (or the encoding of the streams too difficult to decode for the poor ole hardware), so I've switched to a Pi4 with libreelec. Works mostly OK.

    My mum would spend hours ironing clothes when I was a kid. I dont think I’ve ever seen an ironing board at any of my friends houses. A whole generation just said “fuck ironing” and we did. Good work everyone.

    @fzer0 welcome to the club.

    wenn mich wer fragt: schaut euch sehr genau an, wie stabil euer stromnetz ist, und entscheidet im zweifel gegen eine USV. oder nehmt eine ernsthafte, die dann aber regelmässig gewartet und getestet werden muss.

    und dann rechnet damit, daß euch früher oder später beim test alles finster wird.

    und überprüft bei geräten mit mehreren netzteilen, ob die mit nur einem davon auch laufen. ja, es gibt auch andere.

    Why doesn't Apple make a TV? They would own that space. Half the people I know would happily buy one, if it meant no spyware, user choice, and never buying another "smart" TV again. Even if the cost was 2x normal smart tv.

    @briankrebs What happens if you just deny your "smart" TV any Internet connection? The Apple TV is a separate box that just uses the TV as a display anyways, right? I never connected my TV to the Internet, just my Pi with Kodi...

    I suppose it's not rocket surgery to figure out which is the real me here. How/should one report these kinds of things for investigation? I never much cared on Twitter about imposters because reporting them never did anything. These are all using my Twitter photo for profile pics.

    Remember when over the air digital TV came in and unless you had a new TV you needed a converter box to watch the digital channels as analog channels went dark? Did you know it's happening again? But worse.

    While the FCC just recently extended (to 2026 I believe) the required time for the existing (ATSC 1.0) system to stay operational, the new ATSC 3.0 system is loaded with encrypted DRM even on basic channels in many cases.

    And get this, it appears that the external converter boxes currently available for this that can actually deal with that DRM reportedly require an Internet connection to work!

    You read that right. To receive an over the air ATSC encrypted channel -- even a basic broadcast channel -- reportedly appears to currently require an Internet connection.

    Now you might be asking, what the bloody hell is the point of over the air TV if you need a damned Internet connection to watch it?

    And the answer is: I don't have a clue.

    I'm trying to learn more. Stay tuned. No pun intended.

    @lauren We've had the same in Europe (minus the "needs Internet" thing. which is extremely stupid), with analog sat going to DVB-S to DVB-S2 and analog terrestrial going to DVB-T and DVB-T2 with encryption, so that every 10 years you have to throw out all your gear and buy new stuff. Just thinking about all the e-waste this generates...

    @fzer0 das ist der zweite schritt in der geschichte. der dritte ist dann "OMG es gibt immer noch zuwenig e-fuels, leider müssen wir fossile treibstoffe weiter erlauben", und die katze ist in wirklichkeit CEO eines mineralölkonzerns. mark my words...

    In meiner Timeline sind Fahrradhelme jetzt plötzlich böse weil ein Konservativer Politiker eine Helmpflicht fordert oder so?

    Garniert wird dieser, doch eher dümmliche Take mit Fotos von Lastwagen und Autos.

    Also ganz ehrlich Leute, das ist so absurd dass es auch von ganz ganz rechts kommen könnte.

    Ein Fahrradhelm ist bei einem Unfall immer besser als kein Fahrradhelm.
    Man kann übrigens auch ohne Beteiligung von anderen Verkehrsteilnehmer stürzen. Jaha, wirklich wahr.

    Suddenly I'm wondering something.

    I call disposable plastic grocery bags "Jewel bags" after the Chicagoland grocery store chain. I don't even shop there all that much these days, but any such bag is still a "Jewel bag" in my head.

    Anybody else do this? Like, not Jewel specifically but your local store chain?

    (Oh and, fun fact, an industry term for that kind of bag is T-shirt bag, despite it resembling a tank top if anything)

    @TechConnectify In Austria, "Billa-Sackerl" is a term anybody will understand, named after the largest supermarket chain. On one hand, it is specific, you wouldn't talk about other chains' bags with that, on the other hand, it is generic, if you're talking about "supermarket bag" you'd say "Billa-Sackerl"...

    Keep digital devices for as long as possible

    Hold on to your devices for as long as possible. It’s the single most important thing you can do to. Up to 80% of CO2 and other pollution is caused during the manufacture of a digital device.

    We need smartphones that last 10 years.
    We need laptops that last 20 years.

    What you can do

    1. Hold onto your digital device for as long as possible (at least five years).
    2. Get your device repaired if it breaks.
    3. Buy from a brand like Fairphone.

    @gerrymcgovern 4. If you need a "new" device, check if there is a shop selling refurbished devices near you.

    You can get a 3 year old business class laptop for the price of a new consumer device, and they're usually much more well-built and longer lasting. I gave one to my mother 10 years ago and it's still going strong.
