I'd wondered occasionally what had been happening in China since the removal of covid measures-- after the first weeks we heard nothing...
This is my first exposure to this website, so I can't say much about them, but this 4 part article seemed very good, and deeply depressing!

in honour of our really kicking in! Pics taken in mid-week when we had some serious rain (Tues night through Thurs morning) and this weekend has seen it continue. After warm/dryish weather, exciting to see some of the longest spells we've had in years (it hasn't been terribly dry here, but our rainy season is usually composed of frequent rather than long rains + thunderstorms that dump a lot of water fast, rather than all day/multi day events.)

pics in the collage, main post: top L Epilobium angustifolium (the name has been changed according to some, I never remember it exactly, and I'm too lazy to look it up at this hour..lol) . R Symphoricarpos albus / Snowberry -I love the story of one First Nation that considered these (they bear white berries later) to be the ghosts of Saskatoon/Serviceberry!

Another early entry for plus - a seen through the window (speckly glass blurred out in editing!). It was a cool wet day, so it stayed on this south facing window well into the afternoon.

@cohanf

Snapped these today. It was a little windy, pardon the blurs. And, please help with the species names because, I just know the common names. Oh, and the moss & paintbrush was taken yesterday in the Hummingbird area southwest of Nordegg, Alberta.

GRRRR...tried to re-draft the paintbrush pic. About 5 stalks of lime green paintbrush plants. Whatever they 'eat' translates into flower colour...that's why they come in so many colours.

A full bouquet of local Labrador Tea shrub in full bloom with tiny wee white flowers.
A small patch of new lime green moss growing in a fairly arid area up a dry limestone wash.

@McRocker nice outing! Pedicularis groenlandica/Elephant's Head etc- I have to get out to the slough see if they are going, here. Rhododendron groenlandicum (used to be Ledum)/ Labrador Tea- wow-- I've never seen so many flowers, here they only get shady spots, so fewer flowers. Castilleja species/Paintbrushes- nice yellow! There are several species at least that can be in our area, more farther into the mountains, and they interbreed where they overlap, so the variety can be extensive! @plants

    @NatureMC it's staying mostly above average temperatures here in Western Alberta too, though in my immediate area we've had a reasonable amount of rain, unlike some areas. Still hoping for more, this should be our rainy season!

    cohanf,
    @cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

    @NatureMC yes, we need to learn some adaptations for sure. For one thing we need to think about where people build houses, but also how houses are built- surely it would be more economical to help people build more resilient houses than to have to help when they are burnt, flooded etc... :(

    @jace Yeah depressing for sure. I live south and west of there where I grew up, then lived in various big cities across Canada for year), and have been working in Rocky Mountain House since 2007. On the one hand, I've been somewhat surprised how relaxed many people are about gay folks about town, and more apparently gay/non-binary folk ( I say that because these are not always people I know and I don't want to make too many assumptions) working in many local businesses. At the same time--

    cohanf,
    @cohanf@mastodon.online avatar

    @Erik @Arcanattg I like the ideas :) I have to be a little nitpicky about the bees thing, though. I think for this doomsday look we probably need to say 'without insects' and even then... there would be a big impact on human crops without domestic bees, but there are a vast number of flowering plants that are pollinated by wild bees, flies, wasps, butterflies, moths, beetles, ants, birds, bats etc + wind pollinated things +spre bearing plants + those that could reproduce vegetatively forever!

    last few star shaped flowers at the tip of a stem, white with green markings in the middle of each petal and on the outsides of buds. It's cloudy and hazy outside and the overall light is gloomy, moody, with a blurred green background with hints of pink and a dark shadow to one side.

    someone else was out earlier beefing up a temporary overnight shelter for our visiting cat, and mowing (major operation here, though the season has just begun) so I cooked (something I rarely do in mornings) for breakfast and another couple of meals: mashed potatoes w/sauteed spiced cabbage/carrot/onion/beans. That was followed with a few rounds of coffee, some cookies and some music, links to follow.

    A couple of old faves- one of the trippiest of '60s tunes, though I only discovered it in the 80's, I really want to paint this one, as part of a series of songs I've found super evocative:
    Donovan: three Kingfishers

    and another I've loved since childhood in the '70s:
    The Zombies: Time of the Season-without being explicit or crass, this one for me is pure sex appeal!

Happy Mother's Day to all: here's to all who have nurtured and raised us- whether they were birth mothers, adoptive or foster mothers, grandmothers, big sisters, aunts, house mothers, Great Earth Mother or any kind of mother! and may we all find in ourselves the spirit of nurturing and encouraging for one another, our fellow species and planet! plant details in replies @plants

    same as first image, but with text added that says Happy Mother's Day in pale green and light pink in a loose, light hearted font, stretched wider than tall and outlined thinly in black. A thin black line also frames the collage, just inside the coloured frame borders.

    After dry warm (up to 29C a time or two) we had a cooler week + several good . With the warmth/moisture things have been and bursting into flower rapidly- 1st wave in the is already done or on the way out, next waves growing daily! Heading into another warm spell now, mid 20's to 30C or so forecast for the next week, lows 4-10C; averages are 16/2-so spring will continue to race ahead! @plants @nature

    Glechoma hederacea, Germany, Taunus, 2021.

    This plant is known as ground-ivy, in German also as ‚Gundermann‘ and belongs to the family of Lamiaceae. It is an evergreen, perennial plant and grows widely in Europe and parts of Asia on moist, heavy and fertile soil. It is considered an invasive weed in North America.

    The Gundermann plant was used in traditional Germanic medicine going back thousands years and was believed to be a healing and magic plant. Its first written description can be found in Hildegard von Bingen’s medicine and herb book ‚Physica‘ (1150-1160).

    @choyer @plants @botany as invasives go here, it can be very spready in a garden/yard setting, but not much of a presence in the wild or even pastures. My grandma used to have it behind her house, whence it made its way to a couple of spots out in the bush(along cow trails).. it's since died out in at least one of those spots, but the piece I brought back and had in a pot outdoors has since made a significant colony across some poorly tended beds and into mowed area beyond..lol

Still, other signs of in the past week-all beds now out of snow(oops- part of one bed still has a mound by the driveway!) and many plants are showing signs of life, while there are still lots of great bits of winter colour- which are covered in winter, so I can't see till spring! + bonus

    @plants first full post of things actually flowering now for this year! The Galanthus were not the earliest thing when I planted them in this rock garden- that is usually Crocus and Draba is often earlier still (not this year), but over time they've become earlier now starting with or just before (as this year) the first Crocus. Plus the second flowering wild species: Aspen/Populus tremuloides (some Willows/Salix beat them just slightly).

    Our neighbour country expects an extreme with 40°C. This is more than 6-10 degrees than normal because we have APRIL! In some regions this is 15-20 degrees over normal. Crazy!
    We are sitting in the middle of the , which is already on our doorstep. Have we ever considered that 1.5 degrees is an average temperature? How will those who get the extremes live? Here it's rather cold but we have winter in France. Never had one in winter ...
