@verdantsquare There is no value the empire and its client states would not sacrifice to supports its settler colonial project's genocide against indigenous people. From 1700s to 2020s, same as ever.
Arabs suffer from a long and systematic stereotyping from the West. From the Orientalist movement of the 18th century till today, Western perceptions of Arabs and by extension Muslims, are based on what they have been conditioned to believe through the media be it in the form of literature, art, and more recently, movies and...
Article in Finnish, but very important in current #russia conflict
Kreml uses ”traditional Russian heritage” as reasons to setup paramilitary training abroad. These ”cossacks” are not ethnic #cossacks, but are paid by Russian state to conduct training with live weapons as ”heritage”
Of these Kremlin-funded cossacks around the world, 27000 have already fought in #ukraine
Needless to say, Cossacks are not originally Russian either, but from south Ukraine 🇺🇦
@gimulnautti yeah, I learned the history and present issues from a friend on Twitter who is from one of the federated nation states in the early days of the invasion. I was trying to navigate the #colonialism because I've seen much of it in the #caribbean and #latinamerica.
I was floored about how much I didn't know.
Putin is sending his opposition to the front lines. In that regard, he wins either way. Yet Ukraine has stepped up attacks on infrastructure, which is sound strategy.
“Since publishing my letter, many have asked me how I was able to unlearn the Zionist propaganda. While I have always thought of myself as left-leaning, I was ignorant of much. My reeducation began after the New York Police Department’s Daniel Pantaleo killed Eric Garner, and I started attending Black Lives Matter protests. (1/3)
Jeff Halper destroys the "conflict" narrative, explains why Palestinians don't have anything to negotiate and illustrates the twisted tactics of the Israeli state.

This is such an interesting post about the CIA. The U.S. in the 60s was full on anti-socialism to the point that they were willing to overthrow countries. We were quite the menace.
"By the end of the German campaign, in 1908, more than 65,000 #Ovaherero, more than two-thirds of the population, and 10,000 #Nama, around half the population, had been killed. Their ancestral lands were not returned to the survivors. [..] In 1902, less than 1 per cent of South-West Africa was owned by Europeans; after the #genocide the figure was more than 20 per cent."
"As Mali’s relationship with French — the language of its former colonial ruler, France — has grown more fraught, an effort to use AI to create children’s books in Bambara and other local languages is gaining momentum."

📖 In a paper published on The Journal of Architecture, Marta Macedo and Ricardo Costa Agarez compare two Portuguese #AgriculturalColonisation projects: Vila Fernando, in #Alentejo, and the penal colonies in #Angola. 🇵🇹 🇦🇴
"...despite their differences, metropolitan and imperial projects can be addressed using the same analytical framework as they share an allied set of practices, cultures, technologies, and agents..."
The Destruction of Palestine Is the Destruction of the Earth
The last six months of genocide in Gaza have ushered in a new phase in a long history of colonization and extraction that reaches back to the nineteenth century. To truly understand the present crisis, Andreas Malm argues, requires a longue durée analysis of Palestine's subjugation to fossil empire.
"As the world watches Israel’s military onslaught on the Gaza Strip, there’s one development that’s received close to zero attention: Israel’s granting of 12 new licences for gas exploration. But Palestinians say much of it falls within their maritime borders, under international law."
The #climatecrisis will not be addressed until the wars stop, and now Macron is trying to escalate one in Europe while America is distracted in the Middle East. We are inheriting a disaster because of old & tired leaders with no real future vision, grasping to power.
Everything in this story is leading somewhere amazing. It's emotional, beautiful, touching, surprising and so incredibly moving. Sniffed, snuffled and out and out cried my way through the last part of this book.
@kcfromaustcrime@bookstodon Finally got hold of this beautifully written multi-levelled love story. Like her other two brilliant novels of #historicalFiction, she shows she has done the research and thinking and internalized the stories and feelings of the time and place as well as the relentless control and persecution of the feminine and the 'other'. This 3rd novel is personal for Kent. Highly recommend it.
