Mastodon has this brilliant feature where you can follow just a language for some users, which is very useful for those that write in multiple languages. It would be even more useful is users remembered to set the post language correctly. (For example, I often forget and then edit posts days later.)

@oblomov how?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@oblomov ah I see now! thanks!
I've mostly been using 3rd party apps - so enabling similar functionality will require their own implementation, but at least it's available on the first party apps.

This.

This is the kind of clown bullshit that infuriates me to no end.

Congratulations, you just gave fucking Microsoft a million more reasons to shove Edge down everyone’s throats even harder now.

Fuck you Opera. Fuck you and everything you stand for.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity Opera went right into the fuckit bucket when they gave up on Presto and just became another Chromium reskin (2013). That and they’re owned by a malware company now too (2016, Chinese, oh and their GX ‘gaming’ browser has some cryptomining shit built in).

Microsoft is also equally guilty with all the shit they build into edge too. So many deceptive buttons and shit popping up.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity yeah as much as I wanna support FF, their UI and performance is such shite.
Their last good version was 3.6 imo.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity yeah I just ditched Microsoft entirely. fuck em. At least for personal use, still stuck with it for work.

Just a quick question about / : if I move my account over to another instance, will my posts and likes also move? Or are they stuck on the old server?

@fauli1221 @eonity yeah I’m really hoping this gets implemented one day.

I swear there was a parody/comedy vid circa 2005-2010 making fun of Apple's miniaturzation of everything. I swore they introduced like the iPod "Pico" or "Pequeño" or something (most of the vid was how they made something even smaller and more difficult to use, and then right at the end they teased they made something even smaller).

Can't find this shit at all. Not sure if it was Comedy Central or CollegeHumor ... one of those types of outlets. Certainly no longer on YT.

It's kinda funny how ubiquitous the phrase "the Internet does not forget" is yet just how seemingly wrong it's becoming as time goes on.
The WWW gets older, and if that shit isn't archived and the server goes down or the content changes - yes, the Internet DOES INDEED forget. Stop taking it for granted.

It also reminds me just how ephemeral recorded-content really is.

Humankind would be back at square one had we only relied on our own memories + speaking and nothing else.

I have not said it much in public, but I think I can’t keep it mostly private anymore.

For the past 1 year-plus (since April of 2022), I have been afflicted by a nasty skin rash that has slowly migrated from my neck and arms to my hands, and has stubbornly stayed there ever since.

I have started seeing a doctor for it since late last year, but it seems like nothing is making it go away for good.

@eonity my dad had similar spontaneous cracking and itching on his palm.
It required coating with silver sulfadiazine cream and a glove to help keep it covered until it healed fully.
It did come back eventually but years later, and the same thing was done again to resolve it.

Early in the morning and already having to see shit like this.

What sort of shit do you have to be smoking to even think Trump could win in 2024? Hand sanitiser?

image/jpeg

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity folks wrote him off in 2016 yet he won.
If Biden is really the only choice on the dem ticket for 2024... you better believe that Trump will still be in the cards.
It blows yet here we are, the people who go out and vote love that asshole. Sucks how so many states work so hard to disenfranchise voters, and that's just the short of it.

colinstu,

@eonity if an R wins, we're outta this country. Sure US BS still affects the world, at least I can escape having to participate in this sick game we call democracy.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@michael @jan hmm, ran that and I got
'ERROR: Missing RAILS_ENV environment variable, please set it to "production", "development", or "test".'

Is that set in .env.production or somewhere else? (and thanks for any help so far!)

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@michael @jan Jeez it was just a typo, accidentally had RAILS=ENV instead of _.
All good now.

Sadly, @arstechnica is embarrassing themselves with their innumeracy here.

The average time-to-failure of HDDs is not less than three years, and the study in question does not claim that they do.

So what went wrong....?

@ct_bergstrom @arstechnica @waldok bunch of comments on the article pointing out the same issues, I noticed it straight away as well. I also left a comment on the original backblaze post. I’m amazed they haven’t updated the title, they’re usually good about that.

Genuine question: given the need to conserve flight numbers, as well as entropy, do retired flight numbers ever get reinstated? I mean, if more and more flight numbers get retired, eventually there will come a point when airlines will run out of flight numbers to use - and this is already happening with some larger airlines.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity 9999 numbers aren’t enough for a single airline? And they only get fully retired in a few scenarios.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity also there’s no conflict between different carrier’s numbers. Numbers are reused all the time for different oddball flights if that’s the concern.

There are probably other things I can mention that / needs to properly compete with the likes of Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, Instagram etc; baked-in post quoting is definitely another big one that I have seen getting people riled up as well.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity I can’t tell you how many people have tried Masto and got “confused” and stopped. And I asked why and it’s the same stuff I find weird but deal with, but all these barriers to entry are exactly that… barriers. Most folks have a way shorter fuse for barriers. Too bad mastodon doesn’t WANT to become popular (for some reason).

Windows: getting Microsoft’s shit shoved down your throat
macOS: locked behind Apple’s walled garden
Linux: there’s like over 9000 different distros and subsystems and apps and everything and they all might not work nice with each other

Damnit I just want an OS that just works simply.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eonity at least macOS has the “just works” part figured out lol
