PowerBook 540c.

If I had to name a Best Mac Of All Time, this would be it most days.

@NanoRaptor so much plastic broke off of this thing so early. At least it had an active matrix screen. the 520c sucked in that regard. And specs decent too.

I remember hauling one of these in to fourth grade for show and tell in 2002-03 and I used it the whole time for keyboarding instead of the AlphaSmart they gave to everyone else.

@DeltaWye @NanoRaptor thankfully my dad was huge into eBay back in the day. Opened an account as soon as they started. These things went for peanuts. I remember it even came fully loaded w/a bunch of apps and some college student's personal documents. That got blown away though mostly. (mostly bc there's a 20yo floppy disk somewhere w/probably something from it.. around.. somewhere.. still..)

Huh maybe if I saw this back in 1st year Uni I wouldn't've failed Calc 1 and would've stayed in the CS program? Could've been a dev. But nah, swapped over to IS&T degree (already met its math req). Kinda was more what I wanted to do anyway though. I still sometimes do wonder.

Have you been receiving a bunch of spam? This is an emergency release with a custom filter added to the Filters tab (scroll to the bottom of that tab) to mute spam mentions. Turn this filter on and it should catch most of them. This will not stop spam push notifications.

We are still finishing up the big Quote Posts update so appreciate your patience on that one! 🙏

Screenshot of the detail view of the “Potential Spam” custom filter. Shows the options to enable it, mask with a warning, as well as a way to see current matching posts for this filter.

@ivory I'm the instance admin so I've been keeping up on the spam cleanup x)
Just curious about the mechanics of it were. I know the masto folks are trying to figure out something at the server level as well but it's tricky.

Mastodon / fedi clients should have an option to embed any entered alt text in the image EXIF tags where possible (assuming it's not) and another option to auto populate on attach if it finds prior.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@dannotdaniel I think there's a Github issue open for that already.

@eonity I finally found the cause of my eczema.
Inflammatory oils, of which there are a lot of in processed foods over here. Especially now as they’re cheaper / market has raced to the bottom and everything is full of it now.

Keto got me to look into the bad/good fat/oil thing and it really does make a difference.
High PUFA needs to go, replace w/low-PUFA options.

Was amazing to be outbreak free for over a year there for like in ever, and a reaction came back 2 months after reverting changes.

colinstu, to random
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

Had an outage while I was asleep and now there's a hole in my timeline because the server wasn't accessible to receive all the activitypub communication during that time.

All the other servers will probably retry sending most/all failed messages now that it's back up, correct?
Is there any way to force send out a "hey I'm alive now, resend me all the failed/retry items you got faster/now" to instances I'm currently federated with?
Whatever to backfill timeline/feed faster/at all?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@EricMalves no nothing out of the normal for either, I checked both.
Not really sure if missed messages would end up here anyway, bc retry/fails are for when I fail to reach out or process it... but if I wasn’t up to listen in the first place - then there would be nothing received/nothing to fail or retry on.

Was approx 8hrs down, had I caught this before going to bed it would've been much shorter xD.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@tcely yeah I figured that (it would send out to all instances).
Ideally such an "I'm alive now" message would target/cycle through a smaller subset of instances up until it's run through them all (or whatever parameter set, ideally would have to be tuned/throttled for how busy an instance is, wouldn't want to overload but also not take too long either).
MX would be neat too. Couldn't that also potentially help display a landing page that maintenance is occurring / mast down?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@shanie @EricMalves did you happen to know if there's any way to change the default timeout times?
Unrelated but I noticed lots of botsin.space timeouts, but realized their site is REALLY slow, like, 28-32s to even load/render (maybe their ISP/host is further ratelimiting too). Seems to cause lots of retries ... guess that explains how I see their stuff anyway, it must just bump up the timeout until it's long enough. Would be nice to avoid all that and just give them more time out of the box.

@eonity that is the worst quote ever to be quoted from him... wtf does it mean.

@eonity I have a feeling apple is doing the "wait and see" thing again. Have everyone else gnaw on it for 4-8yrs (while also developing their own thing and waiting/perfecting), and then jump in with the thing pretty much perfected (by at least by the 2nd release of the thing).

Looking for tips/advice...

A friend of a friend had their Apple ID stolen via social engineering attack. Attacker changed the recovery email/phone number associated so the owner is completely locked out. Person is able to show purchase history proving account ownership but Apple is telling them to pound sand. 🤦

Anybody dealt with something similar and know how to get Apple to care enough to assist?

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@eric_capuano how were they able to change it? Wouldn’t this require access to either existing email or phone to approve changes to new settings?

Didn’t page rank used to consider how often and where pages were linked offsite to other sites?
None of these content farms seem to link anywhere else (besides ref links to stores, which DONT LINK back to these sites and should further not help their rank), I’m baffled how they’re allowed their way to the top like that. Google a decade ago used to easily derank pages that tried to cheat the system like that. Now it seems to fucking promote them to the top for it. Why so hard to fix.

There's a contingent in the furry music space that's insistent on trolling Finn / Aural Alliance about what qualifies as "furry music".

Their argument is that it's only furry music if it's about furries.

Uh, okay. Let's think about this logically:

Alice hates furries and writes a song about her hate for furries.

Bob is a furry and writes an EDM song with no lyrics and publishes it under his fursona.

Which is more "furry music" to you?

The trolls say Alice, because it's about furries.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@soatok I have no idea who any of these people/groups are but:
If it’s made by a furry, I’d call it furry music. Content of the song itself doesn’t have to do anything about furry.

👋 I have a lot of ideas about where I want to take my art practice going into 2024 relating to creating animated artworks (that are a combination of mechanical and computer systems) but my background is 99% software (assembly upwards basically).

The question: what are your recommendations to get started building computer controlled mechanical systems? Arduino books/kits? RPi? Something else?

FWIW, I will be pursuing scale (# devices) so if that affects approach please lmk. 🙏

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@jeffpalmer I’d avoid RaspberryPi. Way too advanced/much when an ESP32 will do 99% of what you need more than likely for a fraction of price. (Lots of dev boards out there.).

Could go arduino route too.

There are so many guides… it really is daunting. May want to look up what you’re attempting to achieve and see if there are already guides or tutorials that put you on the right path. Can go so many directions with these platforms. May as well concentrate on what’s most interesting/ relevant.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@jeffpalmer how many individual sensors and servos? Ideally (and for ease) would have a GPIO pin for each.
Anything beyond that would need a shift register or one of those SPI/I2C expanders/extenders. Which increases complexity but isn’t impossible. Can at least do a proof of concept if you need a lot but don’t have enough. But if requirements fit hardware constraints then perfect!

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@jeffpalmer Huh! Just ran across this and seems apt to the situation, could get a taste of things before even having to commit to buying anything. Well, at least the programming / activation of GPIO part of it anyway.
https://github.com/lrusso/ArduinoSimulator link in there for trying/using it, and some demos.

Umm so uh.... has every search engine that DDG aggregates all flip on the "only show AI content farm bs" switch??

Past couple days... if you attempt to look up even basic facts or questions... 90% of the results are all garbage.

Apparently supports syncing in lists... anyone know of one already for blocking this kinda crap? Or dare I spin up my own and share it? Blocked like 20 in just a couple days.

Love cast iron pans!
Wish they never fell out of "fashion" (and that's sadly exactly why they went away, when '50-70s introduced all kinds of "science" cooked up by duPont w/PTFE/PFOA/PFAS (which we're dealing w/cleaning up now) and styles/fashions introduced w/this now-disposable/fashionable cooking shit. Colors and styles that constantly change and look dated coupled with thin metal that's hard to cook with coupled with shitty coatings that fail. No need for any of it.
