Why does it feel like Signal will just fall down the same enshitification hole that Telegram did?

“Free” service…gonna need to make some real money somehow eventually.
It’s got leg up on TG now but really not in the mood of jumping platforms again. (That and I barely use TG anyway, just a few friend groups that aren’t elsewhere).

Feel like I was the last furry using Pidgin for YIM, Gtalk, AIM, MSN, and Skype… avoided TG as long as possible until everyone was there and gone from other services.

@arch read that when it came out.
Non profits don’t mean no profit, there’s certainly still an impetus for money (and we all know what happens w/money and humans). Hell for example, non profit hospitals rake in fuckloads of cash and the special few pocket difference. Even Mozilla CEO draining foundation dry.
Eventually board members will change, ideologies will change, protocol has its flaws and doesn’t seem like worthy successor. Not in current state anyway. I’m skeptical about their long term.

Well that took all fuckin day but I think I got the ups/nut configuration working again. Update broke it awhile back and have grated my face on it previously but now it's crunch time and finally got it done.

Full test would involve draining UPS battery too and seeing what happens and verify things happen as expected / quick enough but really rather not cycle those batteries more than necessary, it never likes that.

Also proxmox notification stuff prev upgraded and finally got that working too.

Got all the VM/container upgrades done yesterday. So far everything’s seemed stable. /knockonwood

Would've been nice to get some IPMI/KVM over IP device going but ship date just way too far out.
Just really don't want any major issues when gone for quite awhile. Hoping for best. Should be fine.

This fucking hurts to read.

Technology was meant to help us, serve us, make our lives better. When did it become the other way round?

We need to take back ownership of the technology we own.

ADHD medication experience Day 4. This morning's dose taken a little late for mundane reasons. While waiting for it to kick in, did a few tasks and found it difficult going. Continued those after brain switched on, and found though I was in a fine working state, I couldn't retrieve memories I should have had from this morning. Fleeting ones after dose were still immediately findable though.

@NanoRaptor this 100% reminds me when I installed an addon that limited the number of browser tabs I could open.

My short term memory absolutely could not cope.

Can't tell ya how many times I need to type something down asap, like within 5s or the thought is gone. Guess I could've trained myself to type it elsewhere instead of trying to open a tab but it was wreckin me. Addon deleted and my extreme anger from forgetting things subsided.

I wonder how this'd go now that I'm on vyvanse.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@NanoRaptor also I tried cmd+shift+w'ing right after reading that (blindly, didn't know what it did, thought it was some magic trick for productivity) and then had a lil panic attack when my browser just poof'd (no fear, right? ctrl+shift+t to reopen... that didn't do anything. but thankfully History > Recently Closed Windows did work).

It's surreal how slowly time moves in the world of C compilers.

Today there are still active projects that are hesitant to move past C89, and C99 is still the "new" standard.

The C99 standard has been released before the first public Mac OS X and Windows XP. It's older Itanium and the x86-64 instruction set. It predates iPod, Game Cube, first ever Xbox, and Nokia 3310.

Entire platforms lived and died in the meantime, while C programmers still can't be sure if they can rely on the new C99.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@kornel any ideas as to how prevalent this issue is in the C++ world side of things?

Can’t speak to C but the first and last time I learned and touched/wrote anything C++ it had to’ve been version 98, MAYBE C++03 but that would’ve been brand new at the time.

I’m amazed by what I see folks do and write now with it. But how often do big existing projects and products really upgrade? I hope it’s plenty but I have a feeling it’s the opposite.

Are there any open source plug-in devices (or wire-in, or via CTs) that measure and log (to the s or ms or whatever) the voltage and frequency of a home's power?
It's 4am and I notice the incandescent lights periodically dim, even though no loads are clicking on inside the house (so, some kind of large load happening outside / brownout?).
Just curious when the dips are and if there’s any pattern. (and if I also measured my home's current too could also differentiate the cause of a voltage dip).

Every time I see the WWF panda logo, I remember something from high school, when someone wrote "PANDA 3:16" on one of those stickers.
It was when Steve Austin was big, and we thought that sticker was the funniest shit ever.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@KatSteelwing I remember ending up with a WWF sticker in school or a magazine and going "what do pandas have to do with wrestling?"

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta’s platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Threads) are a threat to the existence of humanity; they must be completely eliminated from this world for the safety of all of humanity.

Pass this on.

Had to throw away a bunch of other stuff, too.

I wonder where I can get one of those bone shaped stickers that has "I ❤️ my (dog breed)"

Cause I want one that says "I ❤️ my Lammergeier " on the bone

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@KatSteelwing
reminds me of this xD. Ok where's the Bearded Vulture version…

Also it's weird Lammergeier still gets used so much in English, the germans moved away from it once they discovered they don't eat lambs. Just good ol Bartgeier (bearded vulture).

PowerBook 540c.

If I had to name a Best Mac Of All Time, this would be it most days.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@NanoRaptor so much plastic broke off of this thing so early. At least it had an active matrix screen. the 520c sucked in that regard. And specs decent too.

I remember hauling one of these in to fourth grade for show and tell in 2002-03 and I used it the whole time for keyboarding instead of the AlphaSmart they gave to everyone else.

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@DeltaWye @NanoRaptor thankfully my dad was huge into eBay back in the day. Opened an account as soon as they started. These things went for peanuts. I remember it even came fully loaded w/a bunch of apps and some college student's personal documents. That got blown away though mostly. (mostly bc there's a 20yo floppy disk somewhere w/probably something from it.. around.. somewhere.. still..)

colinstu,
@colinstu@birdbutt.com avatar

@NanoRaptor @DeltaWye exactly! All of em went for $25 or so a pop. Really loved it when they came fully loaded w/accessories too.
Those days are long over ;v; wish I never sold it all. Got it all outta here by 2010.... like, right before prices started going up.
I guess the only solace I have are that the capacitors in all of these are going. I know I don't have the chops to repair that.
