working on a veg bangers and mash that we can have with the mushy peas from the garden! We'll see how this works -- haven't tried to do a veg version of bangers before. Adapting my normal seitan/bean sausage recipe.

colo_lee,

making the onion gravy now.
And I'm realizing that british onion gravy is pretty much french onion soup ...

Here's what Fzorbius Damascus the 3rd
@fzorb tooted to me before hit-and-run blocking me before I knew WTH they were referring to:

"thanks for flodoing my federated timeline with a bunch of useless statuses"

What a rude thing to do. All they had to do was either mute or unfollow.

colo_lee,

@GottaLaff Gawd ... I unfollow, mute, and block liberally. But, there's no reason or need to announce that you're about to block someone.

Unless of course, you're deliberately trying to be rude and offensive ...

Is anyone else on universeodon having trouble?

"Network error
There was an error when trying to load this page. This could be due to a temporary problem with your internet connection or this server."

colo_lee,

@CuriousRPh @Nazani @ClintonAnderson It's definitely better today than it was over the weekend although I'm starting to see failures now that the US is up and active,, whereas first thing this morning, it was just slow.

Ryan told me last night that there was a problem w/ load balancing in the database tier and he was trying to fix that. I suspect this is what brought the improvement today.

But, it sure looks like we're running in a seriously underpowered set up and it just can't keep up with the load. I also suspect there's networking problems and limitations since things work a lot better if I just interact here on . And everything slows waaay down once I interact with someone on another instance.

I also really don't want to leave and migrate to another instance. But, this one needs to work and work decently in order for me to stay.

colo_lee,

@ClintonAnderson @CuriousRPh @Nazani and you shouldn't have to ...

Universeodon should just work and should just work at a reasonable speed.
And clearly that's not true: failure to load timeline or to post replies and when it does work, working really slowly is a problem.

I was very happy to have our administrator, @wild1145, acknowledge the problem. And he was working on it till midnight his time last night. He's putting in the effort! (And regardless of how we got here, that spot he's in of trying to make things work while a bunch of people are trying to use the system is no fun. And only less fun when you're doing it at midnight ...)

Hangry Question Time!

What is the weirdest food you've ever eaten?

colo_lee,

@MKSinSA @RickiTarr I love natto! Strong tasting, slimy, surprising! Good on toast, good with eggs, good with rice. What's not to like!

(Natto is definitely one of the foods my partner has ruled out of bounds. Not just for breakfast but at anytime. So, I don't try to serve it to her anymore. Otherwise, she's perfect.)

PSA: I can now load nothing in the masto software I use on my phone (Tusky), though I am still getting (some?) phone notifications. My feed and notifications column are timing out when I attempt to access them. I assume universeodon is malfunctioning? I can't load announcements either.

Hope y'all are having a lovely day on the Fediverse. I'll rejoin you as I am able.

colo_lee,

@siderea yup, universeodon is pretty much broken at the moment. With any luck, it'll get better, but it's really not working currently. Regardless of what client I try.

Asking for recommendations:

I'm looking for a new instance. has become essentially unusable since Byron's departure and the recent server migration. A mix of timeouts, server failures, and just missing posts. I've been supporting it via Patreon so am more than willing to support a new server.

What i'd like is stability and reasonable performance. An interesting local feed is a bonus. Not looking for an instance based on a single interest group or one that's highly ideological.

Suggestions?

(Now we'll see if this actually posts and if I'm actually able to see replies.)

colo_lee,

appreciate the suggestions so far. And happy to see some more!

Realizing that in order to migrate, not only do I have to choose a new instance, but I have to hope this one can stay up long enough to export my follow lists, etc. Which is not looking very good so far ...

colo_lee,

@SrRochardBunson That's what I'm trying to do now: export follows, lists, etc. prior to a move.
I've managed to get one of the 5 or 6 exports done now. Took about 90 mins to get a 19k CSV file exported -- most of that was just repeated failures, when it finally worked, it was very quick just as you'd expect.

And I feel bad about slamming clearly overloaded server infrastructure by trying to do this but also ... seems likely it will take multiple days to get the exports done.

Apologies for the longer than planned outage for the maintenance today.

I can confirm that that will have been the last piece of maintenance that will require an outage and that we're now back online.

The remaining few services will get migrated behind the scenes and with no further disruption to service here.

There's currently quite a lot of distance between our web nodes and the database and queue service so there is likely to be a small bit of increased latency while we migrate these remaining elements to their new home!

Thanks again for your understanding!

colo_lee,

@wild1145
Migration is a lot of work.
But, here's some unsolicited user feedback: performance has really gone down the drain over the last couple weeks. And if anything it's worse today after the migration -- maybe the latency problem you mention.

But, it's bad enough that I'm looking into other instances and sadly concluding I need to move. Would rather stay here, but it needs to work rather than just hanging. which 50% of my timeline refreshes never complete ...

Hopefully you can fix this shortly.

colo_lee,

@wild1145 @acidblues Thank you .

I'll hang in for a while and totally understand migration and scaling pain.

I want it to work. I like it here. But it does need to work.

Patriotism is loyalty to a country, and a country is the people that make it up. Disloyalty is the people of a country, makes you a traitor. Most of the people screaming loudest about Patriotism are actively committing treason against you. Actions speak louder than words.

colo_lee,

@RickiTarr I care a lot about our communities and the people in them. And I care a lot about taking care of us.

It's not clear why I should care more about some bigoted asshole who happens to live in the same country as me than I do about a single mother in Central America or a family in Canada. Especially when that bigoted asshole is actively working against the rule of law and wants to hurt people who look like me and mine whether they live in the same country as him or not ...

mgates, to random

@grumpasaurus my team is coming to Chicago for our offsite. I was thinking of trying to do a team dinner in Chinatown. Any suggestions for a nice place to go for 25ish (and some vegetarians). I would normally do Sun Wah, but it’s a bit of a schlep with less fun stuff around.

colo_lee,

@grumpasaurus @mgates

Not my business, but you all are talking about this in public and I've been to a lot of company dimsum events as a vegetarian.

I'd like to gently suggest that it sounds to me like you're aiming for a "good enough, we got you something" experience for the vegetarians, rather than a meal that caters to vegetarians.

I'd suggest the thought experiment of running this in the other direction. A big meal with many shared dishes, only 4 of which you can eat. It's a work event so with luck you'll enjoy your coworkers. And in any case, you'd be better off showing up already fed.

Not to rain on anyone's parade, but as I said, you're talking about it in public. And I don't have to smile and say "oh yeah, it was good, there was plenty for me to eat" cause I have to work with everyone again tomorrow.

At least let the vegetarians know in advance so they don't show up hungry.

colo_lee,

@grumpasaurus @mgates Thanks for asking!

The issue is actually getting a whole meal that's filling and not just because it's fried. So, veg dumplings are a good thing. E.g, I've had baozi with a tofu and cabbage filling and with a veg cha siu filling. (I make a mean yuxiang eggplant baozi) The salt & pepper tofu is a great idea. The various noodle dishes if they'll make em veg: dandan or scallion oil noodles. And of course I always love the fried stuff , scallion pancakes, youtiao, I just don't want to fill up on that .

The other thing that's tough is if the food comes on the circulating carts. Which means I have to ask about each dish and then pass on 6 out of 7. Much better if I can just order .

I think the key thing is to try to put yourself in the vegetarian shoes or gluten free shoes or seafood allergy shoes and think about whether you'd truly be happy with the available choices. Or if you'd be getting by and doing just fine. If you're happy, they'll probably be happy.

Going without power for 25 hours in the Texas Summer will quickly make you realize you would 100% die in any sort of scenario with mass societal collapse.

colo_lee,

@tehdeminz I know far too many people who root for a "revolution", aka societal collapse, from their positions of privilege, believing their privilege will save them and only the bad people will suffer. They would of course all die, as would I most likely.
