The moment I heard Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion, I knew this was going to be a strange game.

It’s a very cutesy game about anthropomorphic fruits and vegetables. Yet, it’s tackling the mature theme, of all things, tax evasion. As the name implies, you have been a very bad turnip, and now you must do a bunch of errands for the mayor in order to set things right.

In terms of world building, this reminds me a lot of Adventure Time. But as you can see from the screenshots, it plays a lot like Legend of Zelda. And what I mean is the older 2D top-down Zeldas, not these 3D versions that most people play nowadays.

My overall feeling about Turnip Boy is that this is basically Zelda, but with a more cutting sense of humour, easier gameplay, and a post apocalyptic story. That’s not a bad thing at all. If you like Zelda, you’ll probably like Turnip Boy.

This is also a good game for children. They’ll love the cutesy characters and the simple action RPG mechanics. Sometimes this game gets a little dark, but it’s not too dark for children.

It shouldn’t surprise you that I like the graphics. It’s got a 16-bit style but has much more colour. And it looks particularly great on a Steam Deck.

The sound design has lots of whimsy. I particularly like the music which is quite catchy, and sometimes gets cinematic.

This was developer Snoozy Kazoo’s first game. They have since released a sequel, Turnip Boy Robs a Bank that was released earlier this year.

While this game got a mixed reception amongst professional reviewers, people who actually bought the game seem to really like it. Based on thousands of reviewers, Turnip Boy has a 95% approval rating – which puts it in rarified territory in terms. Few games get that amount of good user reviews.

I definitely recommend this game, especially if you like Zelda.

I just had to play Alien Breed 2: Assault. I beat the first game in the reboot trilogy years ago, and I had to see what would happen next.

The first game, Alien Breed: Impact was a simple affair: kill lots of enemies, go to the next waypoint. I’m not complaining. I like simple – especially with arcade-style shooters like this one.

Here, the sequel adds an additional element of managing oxygen levels to add just a little bit of complication.

Alien Breed is obviously inspired by the movie Alien. And in fact, lots of games were inspired by that movie. Metroid and Alien Syndrome both come to mind. But I feel this one nails the general Alien vibe the best.

When you’re on that ship, you really feel alone. You are constantly managing health and ammo. And just when you’re in the middle of a task, a giant alien pops out of the floor to attack you.

The colour palette is limited and thus effective at conveying atmosphere. Though Unreal Engine 3 is very much showing its age, it’s beginning to feel retro to me – in a good way. The reality is that, this being a top-down shooter, it still looks much better than similar games in the genre.

It’s the sound design where this game shines. It is creepy as hell. There’s not much of a soundtrack here, only ambient sounds – which does its job effectively. The sound of steps on metal highlights the isolation. The distant sound of alien chirps – which almost sound like birds but more menacing – put you on high alert. The voice acting is kind of hit or miss, but it’s got that B movie charm too.

Of course, there’s the boss fights. So many times, I thought I was going to die. Often times, I did. But then somehow, with a little grit and determination, I showed those jerks who was boss.

This kind of shooter will always have a home on my PC. It might not be the equivalent of gourmet food. It’s more like the digital equivalent of pizza and beer. Sometimes, during those late Friday nights, that’s what you really want.

In Marathon, you can turn off the HUD by pressing F1.

This is the first time I’ve ever noticed it, and it makes a big difference. As much as I love Marathon, that HUD is massive.

Here’s Marathon with the HUD and without it. Look at the difference in screen real estate!

Marathon without the HUD

combo,
@combo@mastodon.ml avatar

@atomicpoet Strangely, this is the same mechanic that is present in classic System Shock series. Why does it exist? Technical or stylistic limitations in creating an unobtrusive HUD, like games do nowadays?

This was an interesting culture of creating clunky and wieldy HUDs, indeed.

I’d rather not deal with anti-Semitism.

I’d rather talk about video games and the Fediverse—which is stuff that gives me actual joy.

But I’m seeing so many lies and mistruths about Jews that it’s tearing my hair out. And the thing is, people who I don’t think are anti-Semitic believe them.

But I’m starting my to wonder if it’s worth giving the benefit of the doubt. It’s not worth debating anti-Semites because the “debate” is my existence.

combo,
@combo@mastodon.ml avatar

@atomicpoet The whole topic of antisemetism is baffling me more than the most insane conspirational theories. Why do I need to believe that one single group of common people like me that have a different culture and religion is satanic/evil/or-any-other-stupid-asumption? Why do jews even have to endure that blatant racism from atrociously stupid people in thr 21st century? What the hell is wrong with those who accept this?

While 68 games were released for PC yesterday, here’s how many games were released for each console that day:

  • Nintendo Switch: 4 games
  • PlayStation 5: 3 games
  • Xbox Series X|S: 1 game

The gap between PC new releases and console new releases is absurd!

combo,
@combo@mastodon.ml avatar

@atomicpoet I think it should be noted that many of those games released on PC aren't.. good. Not in the sense of 'this genre isn't my cup of tea', but generally are not even full games. Think something like endless early access survival games, CoD-like games made with a budget of a single cod fish and a laptop, and such

    If you run an open source project, how do you deal with licensing of non-code assets, such as your logo? Do you treat it like you treat code, by putting it under a permissive license? Or do you treat it as an asset owned by the project, not something that is "open"?
