@computersandblues@post.lurk.org

I am a software developer interested in the weird and surprising bits of it, the stuff that sometimes brings everything to a halt or helps you out. More generally, I'm interested in how we construct, convey and care for communal spaces. Maps, architecture, language, and many other things. Always antifascist.

I appreciate if you interact with me before you follow me.

Some web reading hacks:

  1. replace medium.com/article-name with scribe.rip/article-name and it removes all ads/nags/pop-ups (open source software)

  2. replace reddit.com/r/subreddit-name with teddit.net/r/subbreddit-name to get plain UI, privacy-enhanced alternative open source frontend for reddit.

any others?

@artistsandhackers there's libredirect, which does this for a wide range of services: https://libredirect.github.io/

soooo in order to install an os of my choice on my current xiaomi phone, i had to register with xiaomi, give them my e-mail address and phone number, prove that i have a phone with that number multiple times and finally install windows in a virtual machine, where i narrowly avoided having all of my activity tracked and sent to advertisers.

do any decent android phones at the moment come unlocked?

this sounds like the second good reason to take a closer look at i've found within a week:

"I'm starting a series of articles that aims to hand-hold my former self, a regular web developer, into the rabbit hole leading to the wonderful world of low level programming. Hopefully, I can hand-hold you too.

The general goal is to broaden your perspectives on the subject of computing. I intend do to that through story arcs leading, step by step, to some nice and shiny objective. I also intend to work into a gimmick where in each episode, I get to tell one corny joke."

hello fediverse, i made something. you can use https://arnes.space/things/looptober-2023/merveilles.town.xspf to generate an xspf playlist of all of this year's posts as merveilles.town sees them. replace the instance name with another one if you like and use the playlist in your favorite music player. vlc works just fine, i'm sure there are others, too!

it shows the person's name and a link to the original post, so you can interact with it through your favorite web interface.

feel free let me know if you find this helpful, or if you have any questions. loop on!

is there a good command-line extractor for linux that supports different file formats, does the obvious thing without me having to remember too many flags and supports encrypted archives?

i like the https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/libredirect/ firefox addon, but i see so many dead instances across different services. like, when i want to watch a video i regularly have to "switch instances" four times before it loads. is there some way to improve this?

i know that people brought up the story of google supporting xmpp in google talk for just as long as it suited them in the current discussion. what i didn't see brought up: facebook chat actually supported xmpp as well (… for just as long as it suited them). the reasoning behind it was to "integrate it everywhere", i.e. make it harder to avoid it.

i love / for static types with compile time checks on my whole system, auto-generated docs, rollbacks and so much more, but it happens all the time that i want to try out some new language or look at some interesting graphics framework and i bump into some rough edge and everything spirals out of control and i end up reading about maven build process internals and the java native interface or something like that and that makes me sad

What phone should i get to install #linux #eos (e/OS/) #lineageos ? Looking for an ethical alternative. #lowtech

computersandblues,
@computersandblues@post.lurk.org avatar

@marieverdeil i'd look for something like a oneplus 6 or oneplus 6t. you should be able to find it used for an ok price, it has quite decent hardware, and was / is widely used, so there's a bit of momentum around it regarding driver support and stuff like that.

also, it's common to need to ask for vendor-approval to unlock your phone when installing other operating systems. this can get icky and annoying for various reasons. that's not the case with these models, you can just unlock it yourself.

Seufz.

computersandblues,
@computersandblues@post.lurk.org avatar
