This interview is seriously whacked out, both the questions and Dorsey’s bizarre answers.

The (really great) iOS ZX81 emulator has been updated and now loads external files as well as coming with a bunch of bundled legal apps and games. Like Delta, this is how you do emulation. None of that skeevy garbage with tracking and dodgy preloaded disk images.

Also: you kids think Doom was scary? Pfft! 3D Monster Maze was once where it was at. https://apps.apple.com/gb/app/zx81/id1180117434

Spotify can go fuck itself for this. And if I were a competing platform, I’d be taking advantage. Spin up something about making sure every artist, no matter how small, can still earn on their platform.

From my experience and my talking to devs, I disagree with John and agree with The Ringer. Things really are bleak in mobile gaming. In fact, it’s a worse picture than the piece paints: it’s not only paid-up-front games that are suffering but also quality freemium indies. Sales have tanked in recent years. Discovery is getting worse. (Apple, for its part, has sunk or removed the ‘new’ lists in the App Store.) Not sure what’s next.

Good to see iMore’s coverage of emulation on iPhone/iPad repeatedly making the point that emulation is LEGAL, and that there are plenty of homebrew/indie ROMs available to use in emulators.

https://www.imore.com/iphone/exclusive-iphone-emulator-provenance-following-delta-onto-the-app-store-with-sega-and-playstation-support-in-tow

(I’m still getting pushback all over the place when writing about this subject, with people insisting emulation is illegal, mostly citing Nintendo throwing lawyers around. Although not here on Mastodon, because you’re all lovely, smart, wonderful folks, obvs.)

I was waiting for this one. Netflix kills the legacy Basic plan and gives you to pick between a shitty ‘with ads’ plan (crowing that you’ll save 35%) or nudging you towards the more expensive Standard.

Fortunately, the child (our only Netflix viewer) has just started watching a lot of iPlayer and for the first time doesn’t care about the propect of losing Netflix. So we will be switching to the ‘no plan’.

Well, poop. I wanted to fire up the new Jeff Minter collection on the child’s Switch. But we’re out of space on the SD card. Bah. I also looked at Nintendo’s advice, which can be summed up as: “Ha! Sucks to be you, Mac users.” Now hoping the online guides I found actually work.

Anyone with a Mac done this successfully without losing anything? (Obviously, I will retain the old card as-is, just in case.)

Lots of arguments still raging about that Apple ad. Some claiming things have changed. Apple is too big now. It would have got away with it if it wasn’t for those pesky kids*.

But now imagine Apple swapped out its cool (for the day) iPod ads for one in which an amazing record and CD collection, along with vintage players, are destroyed by a soulless crusher, before an iPod is revealed. I don’t imagine people would have been cheering about that either.

Feeling a bit frog/lilypad with spring right now. Every time I open my weather app, reasonable temperatures always seem just out of reach. Would be quite nice if that high pressure system that’s been gleefully hurling Arctic air across the UK for ages now would quietly naff off.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@marksemczyszyn A bit. D-pad is not amazing, as people have said. Gets a bit warm. Feels cheaper than its rivals. Battery life is not great.

But. That screen really is superb. And the 1:1 aspect ratio at this size makes for a comfortable grip and an ideal way to play certain systems.

It feels ideal for Pico-8. And while I’m attempting to be focused, I have added a few other bits: GB, NES, SNES, NGP and vertical arcade. Those will likely be streamlined over time.

craiggrannell, to random

Needed to turn off Screen Time temporarily. Apple: “bollocks to you, then”. Infers the set-up is wiped and has me start from scratch. I go through the set-up, and it merges the new one with what was already there. But the block set-ups have been randomly wiped.

Stellar UX, there, Apple. Parents rejoicing. Etc.

craiggrannell,
@craiggrannell@mastodon.social avatar

@kkolakowski It’s astonishing that this is the way things work. Because you cannot sign out a child’s device from iCloud without first disabling Screen Time. Which means when you sign that device back in, Screen Time is off and you have to set it up again.

That’s mad. It also suggests sufficiently senior people at Apple don’t have kids, don’t look after their kids, or don’t care about how much screen time their kids have on Apple devices.
