1. Two-hour afternoon concert by our enthusiastic neighborhood mockingbird, a master in polyphony, with ballet interludes by squirrels & jays.
2. The hummingbird I spotted yesterday announced his official return with the customary hovering outside my screened slider, and roosting in his regular spot in a myrtle tree.
3. I snapped this photo scrambling my way through a dense, overgrown oleander to scatter birdseed.

1. Lazy, pleasant day even if it did include my monthly trek to the salon.
2. Today the two regular mallards were joined by a third on their zoom run over the yard. If this expansion continues, I’ll have a flock of 33 in a month. 😱
3. A few of the petunias I planted for color outside my slider, and my view from my permanent seat on the couch. (All reasons I rarely leave the house.)

Since irises are showing their beautiful faces now, here are two of my fave pics from a (genuinely) medieval garden at the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud, Loire Valley, France. (Although their remains are absent, this is the original burial site of Henry II, Eleanor of Aquitaine, Richard the Lionheart, etc.)

1. Still exhausted from the last dinner I’ll ever host, but everything is cleaned up, including the dirty dishes I put away neatly in the cupboards. 🤬 (I thought I ran the dishwasher; it must have been a Vicodin dream.)
2. Granddaughter took the family’s first dip into NC son’s new pool, in the rain.
3. Vagabond son & DIL hiked 4 miles into Bryce Canyon at 8000’ elevation. Got some great photos & survived. Also survived the motorcycle ride to the national park.

Saturday, May 11 🌺

1. Saw a bit of the aurora late last night and discovered that the scent of jasmine perfumes the whole back garden.
2. Got the dining room cleared for tomorrow’s guests. (Not as easy as it sounds - it’s practically an Amazon annex.)
3. Making lime & thyme potato salad today, using my very own key limes. Sooo yum!
4. Bonus: More photos from vagabond son & DIL at Bryce Canyon NP, where it snowed a little on them yesterday (above 9100 feet).

1. Every bush, shrub & tree in my entire yard has been in frenetic motion from WIND 💨🍃all day, even though it’s sunny & warm. I’m hunkering down inside.
2. Hosting a birthday 🎂 dinner for my grandson this weekend & had to order a crapload of junk food today. Balanced it out with an indulgent package of halibut.
3. Vagabond son & DIL left Zion NP for Bryce Canyon, which I remember (as a four-year-old) as the land of pink stone castles with turrets. This pic is of Zion.

1. Spent most of the day outside in the sun-sun-sunshine. Tomorrow’s forecast is 100% rain, likely an inch.
2. Thanked & encouraged all the rose bushes with a fertilizer treat. The first bloom is ending, but most will bloom again until Thanksgiving.
3. NC son filled his new pool for the first time (yay), and vagabond son & DIL began their tour of Utah’s national parks at Zion.

1. Awoke to “Happy Birthday” texts & calls from family. So very grateful for twin sons, their loving wives & amazing children - & my 94 y/o sister who still thinks of me as a toddler. 🤣

2. Grateful too for this quiet, peaceful life I’m so privileged to lead, my comfy casita, & my garden with blooms, birds & critters.

3. Splurged & bought my very fave -halibut- for dinner!

1. Two peace-filled hours on my patio in the sun and gentle breezes.

2. One resident hummingbird alerted me (with high-flying shenanigans & insistent clicks) that its feeder needed filling. Bossy little thing!

3. Fell down the Instagram hole today & discovered a way to propagate an (unpatented) rose from a cutting: dip the stem in honey, place it in a hole in a potato, remove rose bloom & other growths, plant the potato in a container, et voilà!

I’m beginning to think the cultural chasm between Americans is NOT between super-rich/average-poor, left/right, atheist/religious, conservative/progressive, power holders/ordinary citizens.

More & more evidence shows the gap to be between those who break with absolute impunity every damn law & moral value they come across - and the rest of us who “do the right thing” 99.9% of the time because it IS the right thing, who pay taxes legitimately owed, who struggle to satisfy our debts, do our jobs, care for those dependent on us, and actually care about others’ welfare.

The differentiation seems to come down to shitty people and non-shitty people, no matter what other factors are in play.

I struggle with the shitties getting ALL of the media’s attention and weighing the rest of us down with their scummy, sleazy, evil antics, especially when (I believe) they are a minuscule minority.
