Es ist doch immer wieder erstaunlich, wie Dinge einfach nahtlos* funktionieren, wenn man einfach nur alles richtig macht.

In meinem Fall: nachdem ich den Unterfadengreifer drei mal auseinandergebaut, gereinigt, zusammengebaut, und in der Anleitung nach Fehlerquellen gesucht habe, ist mir aufgefallen, dass die Nadel falsch herum in der Nadelstange steckte, was ich natürlich bisher als Fehlerquelle ausgeschlossen hatte… 🙈

First "real" project on my old Pfaff 30 treadle sewing machine 1: a tool roll for my recently engraved 2 Veritas plough plane blades. Thick canvas, lined with leather on the inside, sewn with a nice thick thread, and a snap button for the strap. I'm still thinking of waxing the canvas, but it's already useable.

(and does this still count as if it's foot-powered…? 🤔)

open tool roll. After lining the green canvas with the dark brown leather, the bottom part is simply folded up and sewn together to create the pockets in which the plane blades sit. The leather is folded into a rolled hem on the front edge of the pocket. Then the top third folds down to protect the blades. Everything is sewn with thick white thread.

The old machine works amazingly well under "normal" circumstances, but for this use case with the nice thick thread and the four layers of leather + 2 layers of canvas, I think I bit off more than I could chew. After a few tries with a normal jeans needle, I had to resort to a thick 130/#22 needle with an eye big enough for the thick thread. Sewing the pockets was a challenge, and I had to hand-crank the machine most of the way and take care not to lose stitches on the thick rolled hem.

I quite enjoyed the long stretches of sewing on the outside hem and the strap. Four layers of the thick canvas was not a problem at all. Your feet get into a rhythm and you can feel the machine working with you in sync 😊 It's like riding a bike!

There was a time when I thought that #Git's commit ID being a Merkle tree style hash over all the content, including metadata, was a good thing. You change one byte anywhere in the history, Git notices instantly¹.

But I'm not so sure about this anymore. Names change. Email addresses change.

Should removing my previous name, that's now causing me pain, from the internet really break the integrity of my project?

¹ Actually, it doesn't. Not instantly. Re-hashing all of the history is expensive.

Ich habe gerade quasi das Flussüberquerungsproblem mit dem Wolf, der Ziege, und dem Kohlkopf: weil ich nach der Reifenpanne mein Citybike zurück zum @stratum0 geschoben und den Bus genommen habe, stehen gerade alle meine Fahrräder dort (Faltrad, Lastenrad und Citybike). Das Lastenrad ist dort quasi zuhause, aber das Citybike und das Faltrad möchte ich gerne wieder zu mir transportieren. Ich kann aber nicht mehr als ein Rad gleichzeitig fahren, und zum Laufen ist mir die Strecke zu weit.

Also transportiere ich jetzt das Faltrad im Lastenrad nach Hause, fahre dann morgen mit dem Lastenrad leer zurück, lasse das Lastenrad stehen, und fahre mit dem Citybike nach Hause.

Sie rufen von deinem e-Perso den Namen ab, du lädst deinen Public Key hoch, wählst eine der User-IDs des Keys aus (wenn du mehrere hast), und wenn der Name der UID mit dem Namen auf dem Perso übereinstimmt, bekommst du an die Mailadresse in der UID eine Signatur von 0xA4BF43D7 "Governikus OpenPGP Signaturservice (Neuer Personalausweis)".

Ging schnell und einfach.

I finally found a good offer for a hand-cranked grinder on the local classifieds. The seller didn't know the model, but the "Ixion" logo was still recognizable to me – an old German make, probably from the 1930s, that usually goes for twice the asking price… 🙂

It only needed a bit of light clean up with soap and a wire brush. The insides were still good as new, but the screw hole holding the hand crank tight needed a small reminder that it once was an M5 thread…

Everything disassembled on the workbench, next to screw drivers, wrenches, latex gloves, a bowl of soapy water and a tooth brush.
The cover of the machine case has been opened, and two well-oiled sets of transmission gears can be seen between the hand crank shaft and the grinding wheel shaft.
The machine body is held in a vice, and the screw hole in the crank shaft is being recut with a hand-held thread cutter.

Okay, let's see if I can restore that nice lacquer finish with my home-made mixture of lamp black, isopropyl alcohol and shellac…

Sadly the Pfaff logo on the back side is already too much gone, I don't think I'll be able to restore that.

large areas of lacquer are missing on the bed of the machine; they've been generously filled with one layer of black shellac already. Luckily the golden ornamental banding around it is still almost completely intact.
The round Pfaff logo on the back side is drawn with gold paint too, but a chunk of the outside circle is missing.

Oh yes. Yes, it is!

The buttonholer is a longish device with a black casing and a turning knob on top, and a chrome baseplate. On one of the short sides, a chromed lever, a fixture rod and a presser foot protrude from the casing.

Well, 1950's tech had a solution for that.

The buttonholer in action: first a template is inserted, then the device is screwed onto the needle bar of on old sewing machine, so that its movable lever slots over the screw that holds the needle. When sewing, it transports the fabric in a zig-zag motion along the outline of the buttonhole that is defined by the template. Finally, the thread is sewn up by hand, and the slot between the two zig-zag lines is opened up with a razor blade, and – tadaaa – there is a button hole!
