👉 This is the Patchwork Sewing Machine Cover, that I shared in yesterday’s Playing with Embroidery Stitches 2 video.

For those interested in the pattern, you’ll find it here:

At my sewing machine, first thing this morning. ☕️
4 seams away from finishing the center of my newest quilt.
Then borders & it’ll be complete. 😁👏
New quilt pattern coming soon… 💛💙

Happy Saturday Stitching! 🤗

I finally found a good offer for a hand-cranked grinder on the local classifieds. The seller didn't know the model, but the "Ixion" logo was still recognizable to me – an old German make, probably from the 1930s, that usually goes for twice the asking price… 🙂

It only needed a bit of light clean up with soap and a wire brush. The insides were still good as new, but the screw hole holding the hand crank tight needed a small reminder that it once was an M5 thread…

Everything disassembled on the workbench, next to screw drivers, wrenches, latex gloves, a bowl of soapy water and a tooth brush.
The cover of the machine case has been opened, and two well-oiled sets of transmission gears can be seen between the hand crank shaft and the grinding wheel shaft.
The machine body is held in a vice, and the screw hole in the crank shaft is being recut with a hand-held thread cutter.

Is there anyone following me who knows about adjustments? I’ve cleaned, oiled & de-gunked a low-end machine (HobbyCraft 19s; made by Silver) but the top thread keeps getting knotted up round the bobbin mechanism. Any ideas?

After reading @pluralistic's latest piece on planned obsolescence as technofeudalism, I stumbled across this Tumblr post about how a rusty old 100-year-old Singer sewing machine can be restored to FEARSOME, SUPERIOR working order compared to any newish machine, by swapping in standard-sized parts that attach with standard flat-head screws

Meanwhile the modern machine's plastic parts wear out quickly and very little is attached with standard screws. It also depends on software that's now glitching

There's a place nearby that works with , in particular, that proudly hires and otherwise marginal employees that I think would be a nice place to start when I have my visa and can look for a steady income.

But my sewing skills are still very amateur, and I haven't used a sewing machine since I was ten or eleven.

So... I would like to buy myself a , and some materials for practicing the .

The machine I've got my eye on is 140€, which is a good price but more than I feel safe spending at once right now. I've got some uncertain medical bills coming up and would very much like to not run out of savings because of it.

So! I've started a new goal on my page and would appreciate some boosts!

https://ko-fi.com/handmadehearts/goal?g=0

I'm passively asking for donations but encourage requests. I want to work! I'll embroider something by request without sending you the physical object for anywhere around 10€, as a cheap option. 3€ if it's very simple. Any other ideas, things you'd like me to do, just hit me up. I'd really like that sewing machine! 😸🤌

When I entered , we had to take home ec (economics)

We learned , , household tasks and chores, home finance, , among other things.

I remember my sewing project were a teddy bear & shirt. I still have the sewing pattern.

I really enjoyed that class. It's been 37 years since I took that class, but I have used my sewing skills in a pinch often and used to make peanut butter & other no-bake oatmeal cookies often.

In my school days, home ec was for girls only, and shop class was for boys only. However, I am grateful to my fifth grade who taught all of her students how to sew a patchwork vest (my classmate Mary got yelled at for running her machine at maximum speed!), and my mom who taught me how to use her , how to mend by hand and how to .
