started offering in my area.

It sounded quite tempting until I looked closer at their terms.

Residential packages:

  • 24 month contract
  • price goes up a tenner a month if you roll off the end
  • Use of their router reqd

If you want a static IP, or to put the router in bridging mode, you need a business pkg, which are all symmetric, so cost a good chunk more.

I'd be paying more for less.

I think I'll stick with @aaisp and wait for Openreach to get FTTP rolled out round here.

danieldurrans,
@danieldurrans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@ben We have been looking at some new build estates. Those made by Bloor Homes have deals with some alt-net where you are locked in to a choice of 8 ISPs using FTTP. It all feels really dodgy. One of my colleagues is in a new build with a similar dodgy alt-net and can't stand it.

We also looked at an estate made by a local builder. Had both Truespeed and Openreach FTTP - I would have bought on that basis alone.

I really want to like Passkeys, it’s the sort of thing that on paper sounds very nice and workable

and then you get into the real world where like, you’ve got three password-filling options for various reasons and they all try to be the thing that holds your passkeys as well, and it all falls apart in new and exicitng ways, bringing problems you never had with passwords or TOTP codes

danieldurrans,
@danieldurrans@mastodon.me.uk avatar

@mattly I agree. The concept is great but the implementations are lacking both in the Passkey filling software and the Passkey support in websites.

Then add security keys into the mix and it all starts getting confusing.

Sometimes I can use one as a login with no username. Others need a username. Others will accept as a 2fa but not as the password.

Then you have to add cross platform complexity into the mix.

Look, where I come from, if you burn a gigawatt of energy to make an AI, it had better damn well go skynet on you.

Well to be honest, we weighed up the options and decided that living under a box in a shop doorway wasn't really for us Roger.

danieldurrans,

@mw1cgg we were looking at a show home the other day and the sales person asked, “what are you looking for in a house?”

Which to me is a really strange question for something that feels really subjective once you get past number of bedrooms and FTTP.
