Wow. A microbiology lab at Texas A&M accepted purchased raw milk samples from NPR for H5N1 testing, then contacted the milk producers to seek permission. When the producers said, "don't test our milk," the lab not only declined to carry out the tests but also refused to send the samples on to another lab.

Interesting to note a few more folks masked up in the supermarket today than in recent weeks. When you’re usually the only one, it’s easy to pick up on.

I mean, obviously my recommendation would be to always mask in the office, regardless of the wider situation tbh. Unless you’re able to mitigate otherwise with an air purifier + nasal spray etc, and the number of different folks you’re exposed in the office is small.

But yeah. It is what it is, folks aren’t taking much consideration any more and they really should 🤦‍♂️😬

@provuejim Yup, for the moment, we still have https://poops.nz monitoring waste water.

Really, for me, it doesn’t matter if we’re in a wave or not. I’m not altering mitigations based on that, as it’s still in wide enough circulation even at the bottom of each wave. Folks who do routinely lower their guard, and are lax with it all, are also to the creating that next wave, unfortunately 😬

@jelly yup, absolutely. You could do that with a MIDI app on the controller iPads, today, with the app. OSC would be another way over wifi

And yup it’d be feasible !

The latency is too much to be usable, but I'm going to experiment with lightning to Ethernet connectors and a wired hub at the weekend. When using NDI it's definitely important to use your own network, and go wired if possible. Anyway... the multi-iPad VJ rig dream is (almost) here 😅

Watching the Kotlin Multiplatform ‘24 keynote.

It’s a breath of fresh air after years of Apple’s super-highly-polished WWDC ones.

Specifically: people falter naturally like real humans giving talks, multiple companies involved showing some industry collaboration. Something that’s just not present at WWDC re: Swift.

@obrhoff absolutely. For me it’s a lot of things that have been building for a while - and that realisation that the Apple and iPhone I fell in love with for development circa 2012, isn’t quite there now.

I’m far from done with iOS and Apple development, but I’m absolutely starting my cross platform journey this year

Random thought. LLMs, and prompt based interactions, offer a window into their computing power.

How could individuals use them, for running other things outside of their intended use?

I’m thinking:

  • Steganography, encoding information via the output of LLMs to specific prompts
  • Batch processing calculations
  • Multi LLM approaches to these

My ephemeral message is encoded as:

bing: “how do I change a tyre”
Google: “what is the most frequent color of the sky?”
Copilot: “refactor this code into functions”

And the real message is the first n characters of each.

You need enough consistency that the message works today, but if the models get updated tomorrow it doesn’t matter. The message was important today.

In 2016, I quit my job and went full time indie/freelancer in iOS.

I wrote something inspirational to myself on my whiteboard then.

It still resonates with me, although carries a naivety I don’t feel I have any more.

It said: “software should give people super powers!”

The message meaning, to me, that software should facilitate someone in doing something they couldn’t do otherwise.

It’s been in the App Store since 2015, and I love working on it.

It’s a tool that helps anyone run visuals for a show.

I love it because it helps others to do jobs, to make visual art, and to have fun.

I want companies with orders of magnitude more money and people and resources than I, to make things that help folk do things too. Otherwise what’s the point?!

The EU wasn't forcing Apple to do anything in 2008. They're forcing them now, based on the fact that a smartphone (either iPhone or Android) has become a key enabler of modern life. It's literally harder to live without one. If spotify's dumb car thing (or an Xbox/PlayStation, etc) ever became a crucial tool in day-to-day life, then you bet the EU would force that too. But they won't because they're not that kind of thing.
