The state of identity verification in the UK:

  1. "You need a utility bill with your full name and address".
  2. Of course these are all online now, and even if you try to get paper ones for this very purpose the companies keep pushing you to online instead.
  3. Go download a PDF of the bill.
  4. "We cannot accept online bills, it must have been posted to your address"
  5. Print out the PDF
  6. Take a photo of it
  7. Email it to them
  8. Accepted

Four emails from Trenitalia, all saying that my train is cancelled. And two requests to recall. Someone in that office is having a crappy day, and it's probably about to get worse.

Ok, I understand why people are against self-checkouts.

I do.

Those jobs matter.

But for many neurodiverse folks, those bastards are LIFESAVERS.

No negotiating how quickly you pack up your bags.

No small talk with the cashier.

No stress waiting for your turn.

It's like anything else (see: peeled oranges in supermarkets) - people start judging and NEVER ask if there is someone unlike them that benefits.

@jon look up Pettigo on your preferred map app. The border runs through the middle of the village. Then look at Belcoo, which was split by the border into Belcoo and Blacklion. Then Belleek, where one of the main roads in the village crosses the border twice in a few hundred metres.

But given tensions between regions on transport, and some contemplating compulsory reservation for regional trains, I’m not holding my breath.

@crablab @jon @kim_harding operating speed is 360km/h. No other non-maglev railway has such a high operating speed, and give that the line will go no further than 200km from London… why?

I'm also just super proud of kidlet.

She was unable to leave the house for a long time during the pandemic - as in SHE couldn't, not just that she wasn't allowed to.

And it made sense. The world was fucked and no one was (or is) protecting us.

But she got herself to Berlin and CCCamp23 on her own. She, on her own, has been volunteering for lots of angel shifts. She plans to stay to help with teardown. And says she's met some cool people.

For her, this is HUGE. And I am a proud mama.

I keep reading that 150 million people in EU countries live in “border regions”

But you seldom read how “border regions" is defined. Now I think I have my answer - this map, from this PDF https://archiv.dolomitilive.eu/assets/EVTZ_und_CLLD_in_der_Europaregion/4_Economic_impact_of_border_regions.pdf

And... it doesn't make much sense. In that it's using governmental regions (looks like it's NUTS 3). And as a result how far that stretches from a border varies widely

@jon yeah I don’t think that people living in Magherafelt or Athlone would consider themselves as in a border region! Hell, I grew up 12 miles from the border in Ireland and I didn’t consider it as a border region.

My thoughts on remote/hybrid working - I think as a society we should invest in more small local co working spaces. Short commutes, tackle loneliness, support local businesses

@joelanman there’s a small office block in Stafford next to the station that would make a perfect hub for public and private sector shared working, but it’s vacant and boarded.
