"significant numbers of researchers at A.I. conferences were caught handing their peer review of others’ work over to A.I. — or … writing them with lots of A.I. assistance. And the closer to the deadline the submitted reviews were received, the more A.I. usage was found in them.

If … you think that maybe it shouldn’t be A.I.s reviewing science … those feelings highlight the paradox at the core of this technology: It’s unclear what the ethical line is."

… "Einstein supposedly said: 'If you want your children to be intelligent, read them fairy tales. If you want them to be very intelligent, read them more fairy tales.' But what happens when a toddler is consuming mostly A.I.-generated dream-slop? We [are] in the midst of a vast developmental experiment.

There’s so much synthetic garbage on the internet now that A.I. … researchers are themselves worried, not about the health of the culture, but about what’s going to happen with their models."

"although birds and humans haven’t shared a common ancestor in more than 300 million years, a bird’s brain is much more similar to ours than to a reptile’s. The neuron density of its forebrain — the region engaged with planning, sensory processing, and emotional responses, and on which REM sleep is largely dependent — is comparable to that of primates. …"

"Early identification and treatment of psychiatric disorders in COVID-19 survivors, especially those severely affected or unvaccinated, should be a priority in the management of long COVID. With the accumulation of breakthrough infections in the post-pandemic era, the findings highlight the need for continued optimization of strategies to foster resilience and prevent escalation of subclinical mental health symptoms to severe disorders."

Like good fiction?

I'm just finishing a 2nd reading of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (by N. K. Jemison) and it's quite amazing. Greek pantheon meets modern fantasy fiction.

Jemison is a master. I'm in awe.

I think that, post-covid, the newer antihistamines are messing with my memory. It shows up when I leave the house and have trouble navigating.

The old-fashioned antihistamine I take at bedtime seems ok. But I have serious pollen allergies. So I finally have given in and ordered a neti-pot for daytime use.
Let's see how this goes.

(I was a swimmer, and I hate water up my nose! My bestie assures me it's really not bad, tho. 🤞 )

Asking questions creates less engagement, but it seems to lead to more-satisfying resolutions.

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@jbrains curious about "less engagement", as my experience feels like the opposite but I may misimagine what you mean.

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@jbrains 🤔
What do you mean by "engagement, then?
If you care to share.

engagement
▪ with people?
▪ with ideas?
▪ something else?

I'm imagining scenarios I've seen - may be different from what you refer to:

I can see how drama could be considered a sort of "engagement", but on a facilitation level, I think I'd call that "distraction" from the ideas being discussed. And, possibly, an indicator of a hidden topic surfacing, like power, inequality or a taboo subject - which may need attention.

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@jbrains ah, I see. Social media engagement. Yes.

Folks can reply fast out of passion or when triggered. But reflection takes a beat, and composing a thoughtful response may take a level of attention some folks are not used to, I think.

deborahh,
@deborahh@mstdn.ca avatar

@jbrains … and even asking a question, lacking context, can itself be triggering. Navigating here can be tricky 😁

The beauty of Pysanki (Ukranian Easter egg) decoration is familiar to many Canadians. Ukrainians have been part of our cultural mosaic here for generations! \o/💛💙

The Town of Vegreville took that to a whole other level :-) ➔

"The egg is 9 metres (31 feet) long and three and a half storeys high, weighing in at 2.5 tonnes (5,512 lb) making it the largest pysanka in the world! It was constructed in 1975 in honour of the early Ukrainian settlements east of Edmonton."

It was TFG's 'muslim ban' and his inhumanity to asylum seekers and refugees that made me, for a first time, poltically active. In fact, it revealed to me a deep value that I hadn't previously articulated: "stand up for the vulnerable".

But, until watching this, I didn't realise why.

That's when I realised that M∆G∆ was not an American problem, but a world problem.

😭 I'm so sick of everything being martial in the US. I'm not surprised that they are so strongly polarised: everything is modeled on war, with 2 sides & win-lose rules. Unlike the more complex (& yes, difficult), multi-party dialogue some other systems foster.

Even everyday idioms & metaphors are military, misogynist, war-like.
Notice what you read.

We're all affected! Ex: I refused to use the ICF's 'captain & crew' exercise. I wrote a complaint. (I see it's no longer in the curriculum.)

👀 "I know from experience as a prosecutor how seriously the Secret Service takes every single threat … made against the President of the United States. They take it seriously even when it looks like the person making it lacks any capacity to carry it out. They always check. They always have the talk. …

It’s unthinkable, unconscionable for a former president to even intimate that violence against the current president is acceptable."

They keep lowering the bar.
