I am happy to see lists are a feature here. One thing I really liked about the was that you could make both public and private lists and add accounts you didn’t want to follow. I loved this for a number of reasons. It didn’t clutter my home feed. It didn’t attract crazies. Etc.

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

I guess this is true, according to @feditips https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-the-lists-feature-on-mastodon/ “(Note that for safety and privacy reasons, you cannot add accounts you do not follow to lists.)”. This was my favorite aspect of the , not crowding my main feed by creating lists of accounts I did not follow. Wonder if any apps allow this.

Maybe I can use mute to accomplish a similar experience…wonder if it will mute in lists too?

deewani,

Yup muted the account in lists too. Boo.

Suppose you were trying to invent a bright orange powder that could easily dye clothes and be hard to wash off. Using your knowledge of quantum mechanics you'd design this symmetrical molecule where an electron's wavefunction can vibrate back and forth along a chain of carbons at the frequency of green light. Absorbing green light makes it look orange! And this molecule doesn't dissolve in water.

Yes: you'd invent turmeric!

Or more precisely 'curcurmin', the molecule that gives turmeric its special properties.

The black atoms are carbons, the white are hydrogens and the red are oxygens.

Read on and check out what pure curcurmin looks like.

@johncarlosbaez So neat! Uses in India go way back. Refrigeration was not a thing, meat/poultry marinated in yogurt & turmeric b/c antimicrobial properties…. more here: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK92752/#_ch13_sec2_. Oxi-clean or oxygen bleach is your best friend to get stains out, or rubbing the stain with dishsoap like Dawn if you can’t wash it immediately.

@ai6yr I had a pickup of 3 high schoolers crash head on into the pole behind my yard. Felt it in my house. Being in a court I ran all the way around instead of thru my yard in case it was electrified to make sure they stayed in their car until emergency response arrived. Luckily physically they were OK given that they took down a pole.

@ai6yr Fun little hill behind my house, the dip pools water. I have told the city for years to improve drainage. I have a triangle lot, only pointy end faces main street, neighbor bears the brunt of collisions. Before we got together and planted trees all along our fence lines cars would end up thru their fence in the pool. Now there is also a metal guard rail for their house. :)

@cynthia1960 Oh, ok glad I’m not alone in that. I have only started watching Discovery so I didn’t know if it was anything in that series. I haven’t watched the Ready Room yet for this episode, maybe they will mention it there, or one of the writers will…

Still tough to see that a couple passing away in their home due to the (while visiting their second home in Bullhead City, Arizona) is not something that makes the news. I wonder how many of these happen in Arizona every day, un-noted except by family and friends?

deewani,
@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Sadly I think this is an altogether common occurence. Huge lack of local news these days compounds this. :(

Wow, interesting study in that LA Times Article: "How Blackouts during Heat Waves Amplify Mortality and Morbidity Risk" "....Our results highlight the need for enhanced electrical grid resilience and support a more spatially expansive use of tree canopy and high albedo roofing materials to lessen heat exposures during compound climate and infrastructure failure events." https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acs.est.2c09588

@ai6yr Do you think that would be good for a dormer door over a covered porch? In winter the winds chase up the porch ventilation and cause strong draft in the room making it 10 degrees colder. I doubled the weatherstripping but was not enough. Other options were an insulation bat or foamboard insulation. Thanks.

@deewani@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr Cool. Thanks that is what I had suggested to landlord but did not know about reflectix, neat stuff. Was thinking it could be a temp fix but a precisely cut foamboard blocking the gap and screwed/glued to the door is ideal I guess.
