I’ve never really used Signal before, but I thought it was primarily about privacy, so do I have to give my phone number out in order to have conversations with people/groups there?

That seems…not private.

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey
it's about communicating in privacy with the people you'd normally communicate with (and give your number)

Signal makes sure only the two of you are able to see the messages

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey
good point...
don't use that feature myself, so don't know...

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@jornane @ramsey
yes indeed it does...
it also knows when...
and based on the IP... from where...

Signal says it only keeps the minimal possible metadata

For non English speaking coders...
Especially if working in

requires common language & terminology in code and business

Yet, I see many benefits of coding in English....

  • code homogeneity between public front end and internal code
  • easier to find subcontractors
  • English kinda is the standard
  • devs are more used to it
  • pear review
  • "auditability" (For context, my company's lg is FR... but HQ is British)
  • ...

What do you do ?

(Boosts appreciated)

@ravetracer_22
same goes for French and is part of the complexity we are currently facing

As is tradition for me, I get home from traveling and grab myself a California Burrito 🌯. No one makes these like we do in SoCal. Already looking forward to 2024. The big question now is, where?

Belgium… we have better beer, chocolate and fries !

when I look at the tooling available to plot UML, BPMN etc
I really got the feeling I'm more or less the only poor soul that still works with those

Literally no tool created over the last decade
And of the existing solutions, not a single one really cares about UX or DX

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

talking about dedicated tools for diagrams...
not all purpose tools like Lucid etc

there are rules for UML and BPMN and the tooling needs to implement/respect those

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@tvbeek
I use Mermaid to document my code or for online documentation...

yet when trying to imagine a major business change or a process, you need UML/BPMN tools that make it easy to visualize processes, relations etc
this requires a dedicated tool... there are a multitude of them out there... but none of them seem to have evolved for the last 15 years

I've been programming in PHP for 18 years and I've been developing a major developer tool for PHP for the last 7 years. And still from time to time I stumble upon a language feature I've never seen before.

Why does this work without "return" in front of the "declare" keyword!?

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@OndrejMirtes well I just discovered one could register a tick function…

Living in Belgium is awesome...
except it makes attending @tek a little more complicated

BUT !
Awesome @eric (no not the release manager, the other Eric) and @john decided to live stream EVERYTHING and make the recordings available afterwards

How awesome is that ???

Mental Illness, TL;DR

  1. it's not your fault

  2. you're not alone (and chances are you won't get out of it on your own)

  3. there's nothing to be ashamed of

  4. don't wait until it's to late to seek help

  5. talk ! Talk to your colleagues, friends... reach out if you struggle and also make sure they are OK

Check out the latest episode of @phproundtable where @funkatron , @e3betht, @Tom, @ramsey , @pollita & @eric discuss, openly, about and Mental Health Issues.

Solar and wind and any other renewable resource are good and should be considered
BUT there simply is not enough space in Europe to put enough of them to supply enough energy

Therefor other resources are required
And of all the options, nuclear is, for the moment, the least bad one.

Looking for some good references on « change management »
Either extensive blog articles or books (no YT tutorials please)

Any good recommendations ?

mmmh... definitely need a meeting to discuss if we should organize a meeting to see if a meeting would be the best approach to reduce the number of meetings...

Working on my first project to be hosted by the client on AWS & I'm told I can't store anything on the filesystem.

So now I have to rethink profile picture uploads, session storage, logs, etc.

🤔🤔🤔

dgoosens,
@dgoosens@phpc.social avatar

@heiglandreas @syntaxseed

hello Sherri
might be of interest to checkout the FlySystem

tl;dr
it's an abstraction to deal with files so that you don't have to worry where or how they are stored... and can access them
(AWS S3 comes out of the box)

glad it worked out Sherri
