Green NIMBYism is a mindset of "let's make our city really pleasant to live in... but let's not share it with anybody else". If you create a nice place but don't build housing, rents rise, excluding the poor. Sure, some of your housing may be public/subsidised but those will get waiting lists if you don't build more of them.

Ein Geschäft hat eine Ladesäule aufgestellt, samt markiertem Boden.

Zwei haben nichts besseres zu tun als die beiden zu blockieren. Keines der beiden Fahrzeuge ist elektrisch betrieben, aber der Parkplatz ist nahe am Eingang.

So wird das nichts mit der wenn diese dauernd von anderen blockiert wird.

Now I'm wondering if an alternative history with industries revolution powered just by water would be possible (once there is steam engine/turbine, internal combustion engine/turbine is just a matter of time).

This is essentially what I was wondering about – was it possible to evolve metallurgy with a different principal energy source and charcoal or coal used "only" for redox reactions?

Thinking about it, it would be necessary to discover electric power before industrial revolution in a geography with a product of precipitation and elevation drop like e.g. Norway or Costa Rica have (and this would have to be "normal" geography, not exceptional).

Občas překládám nějaké řetězce Mastodonu do češtiny, ale fenomén genderově neutrálního they, který se teď v materiálech často objevuje, je překladatelské peklíčko. Třeba "Their digital home, where all of their posts live." se mi opravdu nechce překládat jako "Jeho/její digitální domov, kde žijí všechny jeho/její příspěvky". Mohl bych to upravit na něco jako "Digitální domov, kde žijí příspěvky", ale tím už měním sdělení, které autor chce v originálu mít, tedy spojení s danou osobou (osobem? 🤪 )

Samsung with its dumb curvature at the edges covered by a protection glass with a black strip. 🤦‍♂️ This makes e.g. scrollbars essentially invisible, too, but any more investment in the phone (all-clear glass) doesn't make sense any more.

BTW when reading in desktop browser, I'd prefer the padding or margin as well.

@capntransit @travis_robert there is one former rail ROW in my city that would make no sense for rail ops but it would be a fabulous bike connection (allowing to climb to a plateau without any steep grades), but without some serious commitment to bike transport infra by govt & municipality (making it worthy to eminent-domain two houses and build a street overpass where a rail one once was), that's not going to happen.

@Alon unable to do any long-term good thing that makes somebody upset enough that it drops ratings short term.

You can see the effect already in countries like CZ (where compromise coalition govts together with long processes make any complex project longer than one term, thus shifting accountability to the following govt) or DE (where in any given moment, there is upcoming election in some Bundesland, making central government more fearful of substantial changes).

@Alon I think that this "there's always some Bundesland election looming" dynamic is much more permanent than current intra-SPD one, I think I remember it as an explanation of some actions that didn't make sense from outside view like 15-20 years ago (late Schröder to early Merkel era)

My take in the first paragraph is that a car means freedom and independence only when parked permanently, once you start moving, you're entirely at the mercy of others. 🙂

Was amazed by the “league” that I wound up in yesterday. The leader did 4,280 “XP” (experience points) in ONE DAY. 🤯

To understand why this is amazing, each language lesson in Duolingo is typically worth 10-20 XP. With bonuses and rewards some can get to 40, 50, or 80 XP.

To get to 4,280 requires a HUGE number of lessons and investment of MANY HOURS of time!

A mind-blowing amount of work.. clearly someone is extremely focused on learning a new language! 😲

@danyork it's possible to harvest ~1000XP/h with paid Speak practices in base mode and double that with bonus of course. So 4000 per day can mean some 3 h per day for a person with super, intense but far from crazy.

Usefulness of this is another question, but if one doesn't repeat stuff aloud at normal lessons, it can actually have a benefit...
