Hey coffee fedi, my aeropress has died again (plunger shrank, is weeping gross oil 🙃) and I kinda don’t want to keep making coffee in plastic, even when I’m traveling.

Does anyone have better, ideally non-plastic travel press recs from personal experience? Search results are hard to trust and I can find little french presses but they are so goopy and messy. (And I love you, pour over people, but I cannot deal with all that on the road.)

Moka pot? Seems kinda ideal for on the road. Self contained, easy to clean, produces a very strong cup. I like em a lot.

Yes, they do. So it's not a good option for a hotel type situation. Great if you've got a camp stove or if you have at least a kitchenette though.

    A lot of left-leaning people are married to the very idea of Unions. They love them, think they're inherently good, and are blind to the serious institutional problems that come along with... institutions. To me, saying something like "everyone deserves a union" is like saying "Everyone deserves an abusive spouse with a large paycheck".... NO THANKS. I'd much prefer and laws that don't privilege powerful corporations. I want a thriving world of small businesses out here.

    dlakelan,
    @dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @crankylinuxuser

    That's the point, Unions are a hack because we fucked up and let companies be huge.

    In essence they are a way to keep the status quo.

    So I watched The Dark Crystal with the 9 year old last night and it's always disappointing how weak of a movie it is. I found it only makes sense if you assume Henson just had lots of ideas for cool scenes with advanced puppets and then just loosely strung together a plot with vaguely fantasy-sounding dialog.

    Jim Henson died in 1990 so Farscape was a decade after he was gone. Not that you're wrong though, just that more was going on.

    Yes I think Henson's son was heavily involved, but Jim died way too young.

    Stupid econ question:

    Why isn't food more deflationary? Like, I understand why jobs involving humans have to keep up with the rising price of labor, but food gets more and more automated, no?

    Or is it actually deflationary, but only on long scales? Or, will it become super deflationary once it's possible and economically viable to e.g. hire fruit pickers?

    But that still wouldn't explain why, e.g. cereal, has gotten pricier over time.

    dlakelan,
    @dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ZachWeinersmith
    The real answer is that the US has inflated the currency so much that even stuff that has gotten much cheaper to produce in real terms costs more in nominal terms maybe?

    What's the average price of food for one person for a month as a fraction of median household income for a month? Fred.stlouisfed.org is your friend

    dlakelan,
    @dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @ZachWeinersmith
    https://fred.stlouisfed.org/graph/?g=18gMk

    That's CPI food divided by median household income... Food has been largely decreasing in cost for decades with fluctuations

    Chromebooks suck. I'm glad I've got my kids using regular Debian Linux at home. If their only experience were with school Chromebooks they'd be heavily propagandized into corporate overlords telling you what you're allowed to do with your hardware mentality. The war on general computing is real. The future doesn't look particularly good 100 years out. Either we'll be in another feudal society, or bring back the guillotine, either way is bad.

    dlakelan,
    @dlakelan@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @cloudguy
    The reason they're popular is remote management and locked down nature. Kids can't compromise them by installing software that makes fart sounds in the library like I did to the Macs my school had back in 1991 or so 😅 which I guess is good for librarians but ultimately bad for the smart kids who need to learn how stuff works.
