Do you still eat off some of the same dishes you did when you were a kid?

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@gedeonm I’m 42 and I still have a cup I earned in a jog-a-thon in middle school. 😆

My mom also has some plastic kid-friendly dishes from when I was little, which she uses to feed my kids.

What’s a show you used to love but when you came back to it after a break it didn’t land the same any more?

For me it was Firefly.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar South Park

Twenty years ago I thought it was edgy and felt like they’re speaking truth to power because no topic is off limits, nobody is safe from ridicule, etc.

Now I think that angle paints an incomplete picture. It’s too often a cover for punching down and telling jokes at the expense of marginalized people.

It does have some funny and poignant material but I can’t enjoy it now that I understand how much needlessly hurtful some of the jokes actually are.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar To an extent I feel the same about Family Guy. It’s not as extreme, but they’re pulling the same trick as South Park a lot of the time and it’s not cool.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@tantramar Buffy, Angel, and Firefly meant a lot to me. And I guess they still do. They were shows that were fun and fanciful but also usually had something to teach you. Kinda like Star Trek I suppose. The problem is, those lessons seem rather hollow through the lens of later accusations against Joss Whedon. It’s hard to separate the ostensibly feminist-leaning art from an artist who was apparently harassing many of them off-screen.

It's really really annoying when you have devices on your and you have no idea what they are 😵‍💫🤬

🤓🤯

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

@jimmyb On Apple stuff make sure to turn off the private addressing option. Otherwise they use made-up MAC addresses that aren’t even identifiable as belonging to an Apple device. Could account for some or all of it.

You can wake up and decide not to be a cringe-fuck edgelord.

Or you can wake up and shit on the reputation of an entire programming language.

Choices are funny like that.

@Daojoan I wasn’t familiar with that account prior to this post. Is it ‘official’ in terms of affiliation with the Python language/project/whatever?

If you’re also using Threads, have enabled federation, and are posting more/different stuff there (not just a cross-post identical to what you have on Mastodon) please let me know so I can follow you.

dmnelson,
@dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

I for one have not enabled federation on my Threads account. Not because I don’t think it’s a good idea, but because I don’t actually post there and don’t want to give the false impression that there’s anything to be gained by following me there. But if you are using it with federation, I want to know.

    am I reading correctly that one still cannot carry a razor for shaving in one’s carryon? but that one can bring scissors with blades less than four inches long?

    I just installed a new Level lock, which is pretty sweet. There are lots of options for controlling it: The Level app, Home Keys, NFC key card, wireless keypad, Alexa, and of course a plain old key on a keychain.

    I didn’t realize until after that sharing Apple Home Keys with other users requires a a HomeKit hub. So… I just ordered a HomePod mini. (1/3)

    dmnelson,
    @dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

    I have HomeBridge running already but I’ll have to put a little effort into organizing the devices to match the groupings I have in Alexa. I’ve never really bothered because I didn’t have a Siri device I can just shout at without raising my wrist or taking my phone out of my pocket. Now I will! (3/3)

    dmnelson,
    @dmnelson@mastodon.social avatar

    I’m excited to play with the HomePod mini, having never used any version of HomePod before. We already have like ten Echo Dots, but it’s still a new gadget.

    I kinda wanted blue or orange, but ended up with black (I mean Space Gray) because that was the only color available for next-day delivery. (2/3)

    Shell scripting tip

    Say you want to take action if a file was modified recently.

    You might get the timestamp and compare to the current date and time. But that’s complicated for a yes/no answer.

    The find command is a quick one-line alternative.

    find /foo/bar.txt -mmin -60 -exec script.sh ;

    Here we search the full path of a file, modified in the last 60 minutes.

    If no result, then nothing happens. If there is, script.sh runs.

    You could make this a cron job that runs hourly.

    @ivory Every so often I see this funny glitch when swiping back to my timeline from a post detail view. The drawer from the post I was viewing is showing as you’d expect, but a drawer for a post above is also peeking through. I don’t have exact steps to reproduce but I’m seeing it happen a few times a day.

    Edit: Actually the compose sheet/screen might be a factor. I saw one of these artifacts again after sending this very post.

    @MonaApp Recently I’ve noticed some URLs are truncated in Mona. The whole link is in the post, it just isn’t shown. If you copy it and paste it into another field it’s a there.

    I think it’s a good thing to shorten them because some URLs are really long. But I’d suggest putting something at the end to indicate there’s more than what’s being shown. For example www.foo.bar/foo-ba[…]
