Was 2020 a better year than 2024? Please explain your answer.

drell,
@drell@hachyderm.io avatar

@BlackAzizAnansi In 2020 I was constantly freaking out that my newborn son would get Covid and die. Work was a shit show because we didn’t have childcare. I didn’t see family or friends for months. 2024 couldn’t be more different. We’ve traveled, had date nights, playdates for the kids, international visitors, beautiful restaurant meals.

No contest for me. 2024 >> 2020.

What’s a word or phrase in a language you speak that describes someone who is nervous? Not just nervous about an exam or something but like, you’re at an airport and the person next to you is shuffling anxiously not wanting to miss the boarding announcement even though it’s at least an hour away, and they just can’t stop shuffling? More a way of being.

In Singlish, it’s ‘kan cheong spider’. You can buy a watch with a spider too: https://shopperboard.com/Kan-Cheong-Spider-Watch/product/20

You know how dim sum means ‘touch your heart’, in that the food is so wholesome and good that it warms your heart (if you don’t feel heart warmed from dimsum, find better dimsum)?

I’ve been thinking about how even though I didn’t grow up on corn, things with masa feel that way for me. Tortillas, pupusas, arepas: it’s not my culture really but it’s sort of one of the only other things where I feel this, I suppose, heart tingling feelings of happiness and warmth

Computers as tools for humans are so useful exactly because they can’t think and do tedious work like calculations or information storage and retrieval for humans in a deterministic way.

It took like nearly 90 years of digital computers to make them powerful enough to run a wasteful algorithm that pretends to think (but doesn’t) and to deliver bullshit non-deterministic results while using absurd amounts of computational and environmental resources.

drell,
@drell@hachyderm.io avatar

@thomasfuchs I want a fully deterministic answer engine. Like, all it can ever do is provide verifiable facts. This is a really hard problem, but it’d be immensely more useful than a hallucinatory LLM in providing useful information.

As a rice eater, great rice dishes are totally what excite me. I want a ‘seasoned rice’ popup that just does 2-3 global ‘seasoned rice’ from around the world.

Jollof and nasi liwet.
Biryani and jambalaya.
Pilau and arroz rojo.

@skinnylatte Jambalaya, done in a large cast iron pot. There are several good ways to make it and they’re all worth trying. Paul Prudhomme had some great recipes.

When I was traveling around SE Asia I had a game I played with myself: if I meet a W or N European person, how soon before they tell me ‘food here is unhealthy because I don’t get to eat plain yogurt and raw vegetables’?

Very often, it was.. immediately lol

I mean, imagine saying that in the tropics, in a part of the world with almost no dairy industry

A bit like me dying of a lack of chillies there I guess

drell,

@skinnylatte Funny, I grew up in Louisiana and we had rice much more often than potatoes. I still buy Louisiana rice and have it shipped in.

drell,
@drell@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte I’ve not yet had the chance to do any traveling in Asia but I really need to. A bowl of rice noodle soup for breakfast would be so out of place in most western cultures, but sounds divine to me.

We have little kids so we don’t get to travel much right now. But for me, eating unfamiliar foods makes me feel more alive, and helps me understand the people who make it more fully. I can’t wait to do some real traveling again.

The next table: absolutely nothing spicy

I hope they don’t mix up our food. I will be very angry, but they may be dead

drell,
@drell@hachyderm.io avatar

@skinnylatte Honest question. I would order my food that way except for the 24 hours of absolute misery that follows once my body starts digesting it. Is there some strategy for avoiding that part? I’d love to know if so… I love chilies but they sometimes do NOT love me back.

I laugh at foodies who say ‘the best dimsum is at the cheapest takeout places’ when (1) they get their stuff frozen from the same places and (2) nice dimsum with your family is the only way I know how to dimsum

Koi Palace (Daly City) is one of them.

HL Peninsula (South SF), Peony Jade or Ming’s Tasty (Oakland), East Ocean (Alameda)

In the city, Harborview and Yank Sing. I prefer the former tho Yank Sing has a few classics that are better.

@skinnylatte The Yank Sing chili oil is amazing. The jars say you can buy the stuff but they never sell me any -- apparently they don't have the storage space so they can no longer make enough to sell.

My cousin had turned me onto Ton Kiang out in the Outer Richmond, really my intro do dimsum, and it was great. I'm still bummed that they closed.

Beyond the shock of the $22 burrito, La Vaca Birra’s burrito IS really good. I’m not shocked at anything anymore, the rice and meat and beans with some sides at a Mexican restaurant in the TL is also $22.

I’m happy to pay more for great Mexican food and for immigrant run restaurants. I’ll always grumble about prices of ‘new Californian cuisine’ restaurants with fancy chefs who don’t season their food.

I’m also glad I can cook.

@skinnylatte Something funny I noticed though — gas is actually cheaper in the City than it is up here in the SC mountains! Like, substantially. And it’s not any cheaper to eat in Santa Cruz County either. Apparently we have the 2nd highest sales tax in the state after Alameda County.

Hi, all. I'm Brian. I live in the Santa Cruz Mountains just south of the Bay Area in California. I write software for Apple Watch for a living.

I'm dad to two little boys, currently 2 and 4, which takes up a lot of my time. But I also have lots of interests, including music, games, food and drinks, Tiki, books, and I love to SCUBA dive.

Thanks for reading!
