'Boiling not warming': Marine life suffers as Thai #sea temperatures hit record
The once vibrant and colourful #corals, about five metres (16 feet) underwater, have turned white in a phenomenon known as #coralbleaching, a sign that their health was deteriorating, due to higher water temperatures, scientists say.

”What we need to face up to is that no amount of tinkering with #corals—attempting to make so-called #SuperCorals—is going to save the world’s coral reefs,” she said. “The #EnergyTransition is our best chance of saving #CoralReefs. And as coral scientists we need to start being honest brokers about this fact.”

Scientists say that coral reefs are currently undergoing a global bleaching event, with more than 54% of the world’s coral reef areas in the territorial waters of over 50 countries experiencing heat stress. According to one scientist, the percentage of areas dealing with bleaching-level heat stress “has been increasing by roughly 1% per week.”

Protists, or single-cell eukaryotes, are less studied than bacteria in most host organisms but may have a major influence on the health of their coral host, according to the researchers"

The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary is leading an ambitious mission to restore iconic cora lreefs in the US. The mission aims to restore 3 million square feet at 7 locations to at least 25% coral cover by 2040.

With continued warming and expected in the foreseeable future, finding and breeding tough enough to withstand heat stress and rising acidity must be part of the process.

Yes, I spend some time at "that other website" because there are still gems like this tweet:

https://twitter.com/KkHimalaya/status/1700177794133786946

...where I found out about #Yemen's #Socotra Archipelago.

Quotes: "...37% of Socotra’s 825 #plant species, 90% of its #reptile species and 95% of its land #snail species do not occur anywhere else in the world."

Also, offshore:

"...253 species of reef-building #corals, 730 species of #coastal #fish & 300 species of #crab, #lobster and #shrimp."

🤯😲
