For those who don't know, there's a website called Game UI Database, where you can search existing games, and filter by type of menu, style, genre etc. This is a tremendous source of information and inspiration for designing UI. https://www.gameuidatabase.com/

As I gear up to reboot the gameplay side of this project, I spent some time making the world map nicer. Zoomable UI goes zoom!

Camera smoothly zooming far out of a stylized island in the middle of an inland sea. The zoom-out reveals a watercolour-esque world map, with various colourful biomes.

Some annoying news: unfortunately I have to declare my current game project failed. It was supposed to be an open-world turn-based tactics game, but I couldn’t get the core game loop to work.

Should have done this sooner, but it was perpetually on the edge of working and I was stubborn. (Might try again in like decade, when I have more experience!)

It’s not a total loss though: I’ll repurpose most of these visuals, the world generator, and the UI for a new project. Thanks for following along!

@jonikorpi That's always a hard thing to do, but definitely what seems was needed.
It's hard to get out of the sink-cost fallacy when you've come so far, it always feel so close to being there!

I'm sure you'll come up with a new thing that will be equally gorgeous, and better on the design side!

A game I've wanted to do for a long time is one that's designed to frustrate the player as much as possible. It should be an enraging experience. The twist is: it must be done exclusively with design flaws that real games could have. Like making it impossible to see if you're selecting Yes or No bc not knowing the indicator color, or a context sensitive action keeps highlighting the wrong context.

Obvs with a warning on the download page it's an enraging game.

Fellow s, how do you maintain interest & motivation for your project? I've noticed that after ~6 months I always burn out and can barely work at 10% the energy I had before. Any tips/suggestions/materials on that?

Or maybe getting used to this is the only way?...
