Looking into the ecosystem after spending a decade on

Hi all folks 👋

When you do , how do you organise them in your code base?

I often find that I lose track of tests, and when I want to know “is this thing tested?”, then I don’t know where to start looking.

Sometimes I set a breakpoint in the thing and run all tests and see what hits the breakpoint, which is not smart.

When reviewing a PR for new stuff, I can look for added tests. But for changes to existing stuff, I don’t know where to find and check existing tests.

@eldamir@hachyderm.io avatar

Getting into working with and is proving painful thus far. I feel like almost zero of my prior experience is transferable. My time spent managing and servers in the past yields zero benefit. Sure, the Azure CLI is sane enough, because I know how to use the terminal.

Getting an overview of the Azure resources I need is horrible though. I need some 15 different services to get a simple multi-container app with storage and DB to run, and configuration is paaaaain 😣

I feel like it’s a moving target for me working in a legacy code base. I am constantly pleasantly surprised when my tests save my skin and I can refactor things with some confidence. But writing the tests and writing them well is so hard, when there is no underlying design in the project to follow 😅

What’s a good place to go from zero to hero with TDD in projects? Any reasonably priced courses or tutorials to recommend?

@ivory all these mastodon instances have custom emojis, but Ivory does not show them. I just see :emojiname: 😩
Anything I can do on my end? It is the only issue I have with your otherwise excellent app 👌

waiving the new Runtime Fee if you use their ad services feels similar to thugs trashing your store an telling you that it will stop if you pay them “protection money”.
It is just plain extortion. Oh, you chose to create stuff with us? Well sorry, we’re going to have to ask you to bend over now, please

I've heard the term "webmentions", but not really cared about it before.
Then I read this post from @matthiasott (https://matthiasott.com/notes/best-comment-section-on-the-internet) followed by reading this post from @rowan (https://rowanmanning.com/posts/webmentions-for-your-static-site/).

Now I'm hooked... I gotta get that set up for my website. I currently use Giscuss, which is fine, but it is also limited to users wanting to sign in with Github to comment. Adding would be something else 😍

What is a good hashtag to follow to hear about conversations from people who - like me - are sick of JavaScript frameworks, complexity merchants, and general praise for the spread of JS everywhere?

Not looking for vitriol, but rather critique on said topics and connection to the people who are fighting the nonsense

I feel like is circling the drain after getting stocklisted. Sure, they had problems delivering on promises and deprecated everything before new stuff was ready; but now with big layoffs, supporters not responding in time, draconian Software Store licensing, scams and IP theft, I’m not sure what is left to love about it anymore ☹️

I’m looking to now more than ever, but I don’t know if it is ready for our business needs 🤔

I wrote a new little post on my blog with a colourful expression of bad communication between devs and their managers: https://botched-deployments.com/posts/the-cardboard-ship

I probably didn’t manage to drive the point home. But hey, still new to all this blogging. And I think my writing is getting better 😅

I need a #codereview for last years #AdventOfCode Day 9.

I feel like I’ve tested everything, so there must be some edge case, I’m not seeing.

It is simple C#, ready to pull and run, with xunit tests in place. My personal input, and the task description is in there as well, so everything is readily available for anyone to pick up and chime in 😊

Any help or hints would be much appreciated 🙏❤️

Why do SOAP APIs still exist? The tooling is so bad. They're impossible to deal with. This was not designed for humans. I am frustrated! 😂

Enjoying for 6 months now. Stop finding myself having a lot to say, but I’m also finding that a lot of it just sounds like me complaining. Valid criticisms and such, but certainly also just me using things wrong and then shifting blame 😅
I’m trying to change my perspective to be less complaining and more informative.
In that regard, although I hate to admit it, ChatGPT is actually pretty helpful for quick peer review, when I ask it to “Help me change the tone”.

Coming from , where I had one template partial for rendering forms, I am a bit stumped with .

In Django, the template would loop over every field and make rendering decisions based on the type or attributes.

In Razor Pages, I can do something similar with custom attributes and looping over Model.GetType().GetProperties(), however, the asp-for tag helper that helps with model binding won’t work with a dynamic value. I must statically put Model.ThisProp 😭
