Working on tracks for the latest album, and we’re once again doing it completely different. Laura is laying down topline melodies before either of us write a single lyric. We’re letting the topline dictate where the song goes. Which is weird (for us).

Whoops, forgot to post #WeeklyBeats … this is a one-take off my cheap-ass #dawless rig, sort of a #synthwave adjacent ditty called Nominal Voltage https://soundcloud.com/endlessblueband/weekly-beats-18-nominal-voltage

Hey @etherdiver, you're in SoCal now, right? Do you ever perform live? (I'm on the organizing committee for Wonder Valley Experimental Music Fest, and I think you could be a cool addition!)

endlessblue,
@endlessblue@mastodon.social avatar

@etherdiver Aha! Are you in San Diego County? There's a pretty killer modular/dawless collective that does events every other month, you should come jam. If nothing else it's a cool group of folks and good beer. https://www.instagram.com/p/C6ICcB2pqoq/

@etherdiver Ah, up Temecula/Murrieta way! So good news is The Aztec is in Vista, so North County. Probably more of a 45-60 min drive for you, which... ehhhhhhh... maaaaaaybe. Pop on the discord at least, say hello, it's gearheads all the way down.

enthusiasts, what is your take about the ? I'm looking for an option of a single synth to use in gigs as a unique synthesizer, I use digitally emulated synths for production but would like to get something playable and practical for live situations, and this one comes with a sequencer (although the price range is way beyond my yearly gear budget at the moment, even looking only at beringher's options, but dreams must be fed and entertained)

endlessblue,
@endlessblue@mastodon.social avatar

@antares @etherdiver @decibyte A thing to keep in mind about the ubXa is that it's primarily a clone of the Oberhiem OBXa, which has a very specific sound and vibe. If that's not a requirement, I would recommend a more general music workstation like the Yamaha MX61, Roland Juno-DS, or the Korg Kross 2. More bang for the buck.

Anyone using a base model (8 gb ram, 256mb SSD) for music production, specifically Ableton Live? Internet says it is up to the task but I'd rather hear it from someone directly.

My almost ten-year-old PC is dying and I hope to revive it but as plan B, I see that the Mac Mini is on sale for $499 right now and I'm pretty sure any PC I bought for that much would be considerably less potent as a music production PC. (You can also convince me I'm wrong about that if you are inclined.)

endlessblue,
@endlessblue@mastodon.social avatar

@etherdiver Using an M2 8GB MacBook for an Ableton Live playback rig and mobile production. Rock solid setup, running 20+ audio tracks off a USB drive without a blip. Where it may get bogged down is in the effects and soft synth department, especially using resource hogs like Arturia and NI synths.

Today in I have a little something I worked up with my mystery collaborator. She had a tune with vocals and acoustic, and I built this track around it. https://soundcloud.com/endlessblueband/weekly-beats-11-bee-mime

I've owned iZotope's Trash since its release in 2003, but I stopped using it somewhere in the early 2010s. Although it sounds great its workflow is, well, "trash". Distortion plugins should never, ever, ever be confusing or hard to use: turn knob -> get dirt.

So the refresh looks pretty great -- everything on a single page, per-band processing, 4-way cross-mixing... Shut up and take my money!

    I am curious about strandberg guitars. Has anyone tried one? I am concerned about why the maker chooses a plastic nut at the price point. Why not graph tusq? Maybe I’m overthinking that.

    I saw a video pop up on YouTube, a stabilized, colorized film of San Fransisco in 1906. That brought up other comparably restored films of everyday life of decades past, and I remember showing one of New York in the 50s to my grandmother, once. Then that made me think, what if I look for things from MY youth, recent though it may be. And that's how I hit a new low in pandemic loneliness: watching YouTube videos of New Jersey malls.

    I saw people talk about creative depletion by the end of Jamuary, or even a kind of preemptive pushback on the entire idea because it seemed like an engine for burnout. With acknowledgment that I'm the exception (a place I'm very familiar with), not only did I not feel drained by the end of the month, but I'm working on music now and I feel especially invigorated. There are moments where I feel the "go go GO" of Jamuary, but then I can luxuriate in the fact that I can take my time, now.

    endlessblue,
    @endlessblue@mastodon.social avatar

    @Traiken same. I think I wrote my best song in years this weekend after doing the full Jamuary 31. The extra time feels like a warm fluffy blanket and really makes the process glow.
