I've owned iZotope's Trash since its release in 2003, but I stopped using it somewhere in the early 2010s. Although it sounds great its workflow is, well, "trash". Distortion plugins should never, ever, ever be confusing or hard to use: turn knob -> get dirt.

So the refresh looks pretty great -- everything on a single page, per-band processing, 4-way cross-mixing... Shut up and take my money! #musicproduction

Humble Bundle seems to have a bundle with some Cherry Audio virtual synths at the moment, including Quadra which you'll hear on a few Key 13 tracks, notably Primavera and Lateral Flow.

Also includes Mercury-4 which is a Roland Jupiter-4 emulation, and Dreamsynth.

The deal includes a whole bunch of sample packs too.

Not affiliated in any way but I use a lot of Cherry Audio stuff and this is a cheap price...!

@keefmarshall @etherdiver I have my eye on Double Scoop in the bundle, designed by Sonic Foundry alums Matt Yost and Jason Donnelly (DJ Puzzle). Interesting ROMpler design, lot of cool features

Working on tracks for the latest album, and we’re once again doing it completely different. Laura is laying down topline melodies before either of us write a single lyric. We’re letting the topline dictate where the song goes. Which is weird (for us).

Today in #WeeklyBeats I have a little something I worked up with my mystery collaborator. She had a tune with vocals and acoustic, and I built this track around it. https://soundcloud.com/endlessblueband/weekly-beats-11-bee-mime

For Day 2 of I decided to take the on-gridiest of on-grid styles () and slap a little swing and crusty guitars on it. The result is a decidedly Goldfrapp sounding thingie. This one got legs. https://soundcloud.com/endlessblueband/jamuary-2024-day-2-synthwave-blues

Day 17 of I found Coldcut’s 90’s sample library y’all (thanks @eikenberry ) and boy howdy is it good stuff. Had to do some break chillout because of course

After a few days off from #Jamuary back to the grind with #SongAWeek and a little #TripHop ! I can really feel the extra time, quite luxurious. Pretty happy with this one.

Another episode of “What Happened to Chiptune” dropped, and this one really focused on how “scene purity” can really wreck a movement. Super interesting stuff, with implications well beyond the scene. https://whathappenedtochiptune.org/episodes/matthew-joseph-payne

A belated :

We are Endless Blue, a duo (and sometimes band) from San Marcos, CA by way of Milwaukee and Minneapolis. We’ve been at this for just shy of 20 years, self-producing numerous albums, appearing on several indie , and playing a bunch of shows. Our music is on all the things, but mostly here:

enthusiasts, what is your take about the ? I'm looking for an option of a single synth to use in gigs as a unique synthesizer, I use digitally emulated synths for production but would like to get something playable and practical for live situations, and this one comes with a sequencer (although the price range is way beyond my yearly gear budget at the moment, even looking only at beringher's options, but dreams must be fed and entertained)

@antares @etherdiver @decibyte A thing to keep in mind about the ubXa is that it's primarily a clone of the Oberhiem OBXa, which has a very specific sound and vibe. If that's not a requirement, I would recommend a more general music workstation like the Yamaha MX61, Roland Juno-DS, or the Korg Kross 2. More bang for the buck.

@flockofnazguls I still have my "Big Hug Mug". Season 4 is being released now and IMHO it's the spiritual second season of True Detective. Sooooooo fucking good, sooooooo fucking creepy.

Hey @etherdiver, you're in SoCal now, right? Do you ever perform live? (I'm on the organizing committee for Wonder Valley Experimental Music Fest, and I think you could be a cool addition!)

@etherdiver Ah, up Temecula/Murrieta way! So good news is The Aztec is in Vista, so North County. Probably more of a 45-60 min drive for you, which... ehhhhhhh... maaaaaaybe. Pop on the discord at least, say hello, it's gearheads all the way down.

@etherdiver Aha! Are you in San Diego County? There's a pretty killer modular/dawless collective that does events every other month, you should come jam. If nothing else it's a cool group of folks and good beer. https://www.instagram.com/p/C6ICcB2pqoq/

I am curious about strandberg guitars. Has anyone tried one? I am concerned about why the maker chooses a plastic nut at the price point. Why not graph tusq? Maybe I’m overthinking that.

Ok buddies, if I would like to lengthen the sustain on clean, and thicken/widen the notes on the higher strings, what effects chain in Logic would you all recommend? I don’t have enough space to get any pedals yet except for the mirrorhouse and the KinKin gummy bear chorus pedal. So for now I’m using the DAW. Thanks!! I can track the higher end parts separately so that I don’t over amplify the lower end parts, if that will help get what I’m going for on the high end. :blobcatcoffee:

    endlessblue,
    @endlessblue@mastodon.social avatar

@ambergrey Overdriven sustains is easy-peasy, as distortion/overdrive has a baked-in level of compression. Clean sustain is a little tougher -- you're always going to be dealing with that initial transient spike of the pluck.

So probably looking at two compressors. Add a slow release one-knob like an LA2A and apply gain until you like the sustain. Then add a very fast compressor or limiter (probably VCA style) to tame the transient until it's no longer poking you in the eye.

For #Jamuary 29th, I got back to the kind of electronic rock I have the most fun making. It's a refined version of the kind of stuff I'd have done ten years ago: energetic, a bit weird, a bit experimental; a combination of sounds I find enjoyable, compelling, or interesting.
