This App Is Coming To Linux WITHOUT XORG SUPPORT?? https://youtu.be/rQF5zJ6Lfho

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I mean hey, I can only see this as a good thing. Not just the wayland support, but also supporting distrobox. Some apps work jankily in distroboxes, so I'm glad that they are aiming to make the app functional with it (most are fine, but I notice this mostly in windows first apps).

I also find it hilarious that the LTS is not not supported, only 23.04 is.Despite the fact I think most businesses using linux as their workstation would use Ubuntu LTS.

Are there any other users here with hardware? I've been using the spin of Fedora 38 for over a year now, and while I adore KDE and have for years, I'm having some issues lately and I can't help but wonder if Nvidia's crappy drivers are not a great fit for KDE. 😔

Have any of you lovely tried both and KDE on Nvidia? Is there any noticeable difference in performance/compatibility/bugginess? Would switching to Gnome be a better fit for my system, or would I likely see all the same issues?

In that same vein, has anyone had any luck getting Wayland to work well on Nvidia hardware? IIRC, 39 or 40 is going to cut X11 altogether, which is tough for me cause Fedora is my favorite , but Wayland is a terrible experience for me, at least with Fedora KDE and my RTX 2070 Super.

I'm so tempted just to ditch Nvidia altogether, but I would miss DLSS and good performance with raytracing, so it's a really hard choice. 😥

enthusiast101,

@ADHDefy
I use one of the ublue custom images and I haven't noticed any issues between GNOME or KDE. Though I don't have an AMD system to compare the experience.

niccolove, to random

It's official: Google is randomly uninstalling KDE connect from people's phones with no explanation given.

enthusiast101,

@niccolove
I can't say I noticed this issue but then again I run a custom Android ROM without Google Play.

I shouldn't need to explain this but just because I have crypto donation links, that doesn't mean I'm a crypto bro. Who am I to stop people giving me money even if that money is magical internet money

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I think the biggest issues people have with that is the environmental impact some cryptocurrencies have.

Some places have opted to only accept cryptocurrencies that are environmentally conscious. This way they still get the money but at least satisfy some of the complaints.

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I probably just didn't see the videos where you talked about it then. Either that or I forgot.

BrodieOnLinux, to GNOME
@BrodieOnLinux@linuxrocks.online avatar

Here's why #GNOME absolutely should drop Xorg support, GNOME is the default #Linux desktop for #Ubuntu, #RHEL, and these are very popular distros for business use, this is the kick in the balls #NVIDIA needs to fix the drivers, business partners won't take NVIDIA's shit for long.

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
If Gnome stops supporting it, I imagine the distros will just make a custom fork that enables Xorg support. Either that or manually put in the text file for the user.

The Wayland Linux Screensaver Dilemma https://youtu.be/Jy3Y0God0Ag

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I agree that a screensaver wouldn't have much point today. Though I'm surprised KDE is not implementing one, since there already functionality that locks a computer upon sleeping, this shouldn't be too hard to do.

That said, I'm sure someone already made a screensaver extension/plasmoid that already does this for those who really want it.

enthusiast101,

@Conan_Kudo @BrodieOnLinux
Yeah, that's possible. Though I think it's probably a better idea to just let the computer sleep.

Modprobe Finally Gets This Basic Developer Feature https://youtu.be/EK9bYxAs46M

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I imagine if people are worried about security issues, people may want to compile kernels with this feature off. Potentially even adding compile flags or the like to make this easier.

Just wondering...

Would I be right in saying that the set of people who use FOSS / prefer FOSS is almost fully a subset of people who use Linux?

(As a side note, no idea why anyone would have a reason to choose 'other' but it feels appropriate to put it there.)

(...And another side note, I may be posting waaay to many polls than what's healthy. What can I say? I love them!)

enthusiast101,

@writeblankspace
I mean FOSS and linux use are connected but you can prefer one without the other. Like prefer FOSS but not use linux, or use linux, but not care about FOSS.

There people who FOSS, but still have to use Windows (or something else), and dual booting may be too difficult to justify.

I got hit with it at one point, but I've just put a filter on that url and not worried about it since. Funny how the bot you got was shilling the same url.

Fun times, the latest Kdenlive is completely broken, it duplicates my main audio track deleting all of the other tracks, I guess we're back to holding back this package

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
Maybe try a distrobox, with something like fedora or Ubuntu latest image for buggy programs? I get you use arch for a reason, but I imagine there would be less bugs. Though you might miss some content fodder this way.

https://news.itsfoss.com/bazzite/

enthusiast101,

@governa
I'm currently using using as a test. It has a lot of gaming stuff sure, but it's also pretty good for day to day use. It uses a tad bit more resources than regular kionite, but its still pretty good.

It has a few kinks when it comes to desktop files but works pretty well otherwise

I really want the duckduckgo browser for Linux. Since that doesn't exist, does anyone know of another browser with a similar mechanism as their burn button with the ability to make select sites burn-proof?

I'm using Vivaldi and am generally happy, but I really appreciate that burn feature.

enthusiast101,

@brettcannon
IDK about a burn button, but firefox has an option to clear site data when closed, you can add exceptions to that. I imagine you can do something similar with Vivaldi.

You can also use the "Firefox Multi-Account Containers" extension to create a container, do the stuff you want to do, then delete the container.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/?utm_source=addons.mozilla.org&utm_medium=referral&utm_content=featured

I know this isn't exactly what you want, but hope it helps

enthusiast101,

@brettcannon
It wont affect any ad blockers since that is presumably an extension, but it will clear cookies of any site not in exceptions.

Also I realize its not really convenient, but I'm not sure of any other way to replicate the burn button. Though it may exist

I'm sometimes amazed that it's 2023, and people still hit the "Reply All" button to ask to be removed from the Reply All emails that everybody is sending.

😒

enthusiast101,

@mike
I remember last year a bunch of people sent emails to the wrong email group, a bunch of people replied, which in turn created an incredible amount of emails.

Never before or since that time have I been more greatful for email filters.

What's your favorite desktop environment?

enthusiast101,

For me its probably KDE. Haven't tried most of the ones you mentioned in a long while. I usually switch between Gnome with a lot of extensions, and KDE.

Any wonder why I made sure to use ethernet instead of wi-fi for this part?

enthusiast101,

@yakkoj
If you have multiple devices with steam and the requisite storage, you could use steams peer to peer transfer thingy to transfer over a local network. Whether this would be faster depends on your internet and router though. For me, this makes my life a lot easier.

I think you need to go to steam settings, find the "accept transfer over local network" to enable.

The Rise Of Auto Updating Package Managers https://youtu.be/SHi6VZe0GmQ

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I like auto updating systems since I don't have to do anything. I currently run a ublue image, with a login script that updates all my distroboxes.

As long as I shut the system down regularly, I don't really have to worry about updates, especially security updates.

Plus my system hasn't broken down due to an update specifically, so I haven't see any issues there either. I get wanting to manually update, but I feel like this is the best option for most people.

OpenSUSE Linux Has ANOTHER Distro Stream! https://youtu.be/QdIZnff_1Mk

enthusiast101,

@BrodieOnLinux
I don't entirely see the the point of this distro, but can see how it will be useful to some. Opensuse Tumbleweed is already pretty stable thanks to its testing.

I think corporations and individuals who need relatively new software but also want as stable a system as they can get may appreciate this.

My biggest concern is how are security fixes handled? Backporting patches will be difficult if the goal is to automate as of much of this as possible.

(Fediverse survey post, asking people to click on a web link to a Mastodon post and say what their app does with it.)

UPDATE: Aaaarrgghhhhhhh! 😱 I had a number of people asking me for clarification of the poll, so I edited option wording, but this caused it to reset the responses to zero. I am so sorry! 🥴

The latest figures before I messed this up were this:

About 75% of people clicking on a link to a Mastodon post saw it displayed a normal post, 25% saw it displayed in a browser window.

enthusiast101,

@feditips
My case is a bit wierd. I use the mastodon redirect app on f droid. So everything works fine. I don't know how this would work without it

The reason I'm grumbling about this year's iPhone and throwing snarky shade at it is because all that's being discussed is the Pro Max version.

I don't need any of that. I'd like to get by with a phone that just makes and takes calls, but since it was decided for me that "no one wants that", I want something that gets the job done without breaking my wallet.

enthusiast101,

@yakkoj
That's fair. In my case, I now look for a custom ROM I like, then see which phones will work well with it. Mostly because I'm willing to live with a few inconveniences if it means being able to tinker with stuff (plus it's more private this way).

Though I get I'm a bit out there. If an IPhone fits your needs/wants better, then go ahead with it.
