Git submodule question. Yes, I know, your advice is probably "don't use submodules". But.

Is it possible to clone a repo with submodules such the submodule branches are "activated" after clone?

Like, in .gitmodules we say:

[submodule "local/path"]
path = local/path
url = remote/path
branch = BRANCHNAME

We hoped branch = BRANCHNAME would make it activate BRANCHNAME on clone. But no, it checks out as "detatched head", which later makes VSCode confused. Can we do better?

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@mcc I think what you need is part of the clone command itself.
I found a description here https://stackoverflow.com/a/3797061/716029

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@mcc you want the "make submodules checked out as soon someone else clones this repository without needing them to tell about it"?
Then I guess you are right :/

ctietze, to neovim
@ctietze@mastodon.social avatar

Recently picked up that an "IDE" is a largely uncustomized, out-of-the-box experience, and that (Neovimmers) call the result of their customizations a "PDE", a "Personal Development Environment" instead.

Made me wonder:

Is the notion that IDE's are what they are, mostly unchangable, a common one?

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@ctietze many of the IDEs are very customizable. Like Visual studio code every aspect could be customized with some JavaScript knowledge.

But looking and behaving in a common and predictable way is probably one of their strengths, and which makes the learning experience more smoothly.

The introduction of the term PDE is maybe more about standing out, and separating themselves from IDEs

It takes a special kind of business to admit such a thing, but I'm not sure this was intended..

Since noreply@curve.com is their email, I'd love it if folks can share. Let them know they need to do better

Hot Take: Wer am Freitag über das Tanzverbot jammert, will ja tagsüber und am folgenden Montag unbedingt arbeiten gehen.

Und am "Vatertag".
Und am Pfingsmontag.
Und am 25. und 26. Dezember.

Oder?

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

technically the way we fragmented post twitter means i am now publicly representing phpc.social with every single thing i do. so how long before a situation happens where someone gets expelled via on-network committee for off-network comments?

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@ramsey @bobmagicii its an argument automatically to happen as soon as "one steps on someone else foot" and the reason why some instances use separate anonymous admin/moderator accounts.

I had it happen to me on a github project just for working active on it and having merge permissions.

question

We had a bug yesterday where a class from the elastic APM extension was not found, but only sporadically for a few requests, then it was working again.

Anyone has an Idea what could have caused this? currently we think it might be an opcache related issue.

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@awoodsnet so we tested this out, and in our case the load order alone was not the problematic factor, it still happens.

folks, what framework-agnostic tooling (as in not / / etc) are you using for running headless browser-based tests these days via something like ?

I'm looking at setting something up in on , I've tried Symfony Panther and it's been a shitshow of errors and not being able to get or running in Docker :/

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@brunty if its fully framework agnostic, then I still go with one of the js based ones, as thats closer on native APIs 👀

else its probably codeception in php

I can’t remember who OP was but this is a genuine question that bears repeating:

A significant amount of the UK feels like it’s underwater this winter season, like the years before, due to river and surface flooding from incessant rain barrages. In half a year’s time, like the years before, we’ll likely be in drought territory again.

Why aren’t we harnessing the former to combat the latter? :neofox_think:

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@lukito in germany we have right now the same issue.
Decades long decisions on designing the landscape, which will take a long time to reverse, and also gets surprisingly a lot of opposition from locals :/

Also a lot of the flooding water is contaminated by toxins from various mining sites or simply sewage

One of the aspects of commercial television series from the 60s and 70s (and to various extents somewhat later as well) was how producers didn't feel a need to score EVERY SINGLE SECOND OF EVERY SHOT.

Watching classics like "Columbo" and the original "Hawaii Five-0", you notice how the audio is so clear and conversations easy to hear and understand, without continuous music under (or sometimes over) virtually everything anyone is saying.

It's often noted how long these shows could go with a continuous shot without cutting, while "modern" shows feel a need for annoying multiple cuts per second much of the time.

But the audio issue is more basic. When there's a continuous score (whether or not low grade synthesizers are involved), just keeping track of what's being said can be a mess.

And this isn't just a problem for older viewers. Surveys are showing that a surprisingly high percentage of all age groups are now routinely leaving closed captioning enabled, the difficulty with hearing and understanding dialogue has become so intense on modern TV series and feature films (with the latter not even providing practical closed captioning in theaters in most cases).

"Can you hear me now?"

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@lauren one thing I noticed, it often is worse with shows where english is the original language. When I watch it synchronized into german the sound levels are often different and the voices are more clear to hear

The eruption of a new volcano near Grindavík, has finally started.

Just to make this very clear: everyone, and most house pets, had been evacuated from Grindavík weeks ago. It is not clear how close to the actual town this is, but at least rest assured nobody is in danger.

Dad's still obsessed with these headphones. He's now trying to find wireless headphones that use the 5GHz frequency instead of the 2.4 one.

As far as I know such a thing doesn't exist. Can anyone confirm otherwise?

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@Bowsette independent of if it exists, if its like with 5GHz wifi, then the connection would be bad as soon there is a small barrier between headphones and the sender. Like, you could probably not even leave the room with them.
Depending on the position of the antenna your own head could block the signal

is there a way to just absolutely disable git storing file permissions at all ever?

like if i push from a server that hasn't had core.filemode 0 set, i want the remote host to just straight up ignore the permissions because they are wrong and bad. they are always wrong and bad, they are never not wrong and bad.

just pushed on accident a blanket 777 to all my repos and you know what thats on you for running my code and not knowing your file permissions. and aint gonna be arsed to rebase max it.

Flyingmana,
@Flyingmana@phpc.social avatar

@bobmagicii there are server side hooks which can deny changes doing this, or the hook libraries which allow repositories to add pre commit hooks
