How long has it been since you last posted a photo on a fediverse account?

Student protesters, humanitarian organizations, and the International Criminal Court are usually not on the wrong side of history.

An excellent and explainer! (and it doesn’t even refer to any specific platform) https://youtu.be/VmSWPj0T9IQ

@andypiper @steve telephone service is also a good analogy. Lots of carriers, but anyone can call or text anyone in any country.

If we can build an open social network, we can have open source mobile devices.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@brooke yeah, agreed. I think the way to slice this Gordian knot is with PWAs, but maybe there's another trick. Regardless, it feels like a very parallel struggle with federated social networks.

When the best thing your defenders can say about your warrant for crimes against humanity is that it was announced alongside the wrong people and should have been done separately, well, that's not really a ringing endorsement.

@fifilamoura I mean, if they need a personalized invitation and a VIP entrance to the court at The Hague, I say we give it to them.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

Friends, when I get accused of war crimes, I'd like you to say things like "Evan did not commit war crimes" instead of tone-policing the warrants.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@trwnh probably not? That is untrue and would not help my case.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@trwnh OK. If I get indicted for war crimes, I hope my friends will tell it like it is.

When is it OK to change the subject in your reply to a post?

evan, (edited )
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@kasperd @kamstrup [deleted]

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@brooke honestly I really thought "changing the subject" was a common idiom and clear in context but apparently not!

https://en.m.wiktionary.org/wiki/change_the_subject

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@dneary there's an implicit "Who cares?" at the beginning of every reply that changes the subject.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@brooke no, absolute fair. I really should have whistled this question.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar
evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@dneary perfectly reasonable! Do you notice at all when people do it with you?

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@kasperd @kamstrup but, hey: I explicitly said that people who wanted to make a joke and change the subject could do that. So, it's definitely on me. Deleting my previous comment.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@Archnemysis Oh, absolutely. I think what I'm most concerned about is changes of subject that just ignore what someone brought out and skip straight to your own priorities. Uncool!

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@Archnemysis I definitely think it's less of a big deal when you include the OP in the topic, and you do it in a way that flows from what they just posted. When they put up photos of their vacation to Greece, and you ask, "Wow, didn't you say you were going to Spain next year?", that's not really hijacking their thread. Collaboration and continuity.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@TerryHancock yeah, absolutely. I started this poll when I saw that an Open Source maintainer posted about a trip he'd been on, and one of the commenters asked him when a particularly requested feature would be included in the software. It's just dismissive and dehumanizing.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@TerryHancock Exactly. "You're not a person, you're a code-generating service."

When the American senate recognizes that the ICC prosecutions of Netanyahu mean they too could be prosecuted, is their response to reflect, and change strategy? No! It is to propose the Hague invasion act II!

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@LALegault maybe they can impeach the Hague.

(I just sent this to the White House.)

Mr. President,

I heard a speech by you at a dinner last night about the War in Gaza where you insisted that "it's not genocide."

Let me first point out that if you have to say that about anything, it's probably really bad. You don't have to say that about a baseball game or a Christmas parade.

evan,
@evan@cosocial.ca avatar

@titaniumbiscuit Genocide is a jus cogens -- an imperative of the highest order. There is no higher priority. We must stop it at all costs. "Let Biden have a little genocide, he's a pretty good guy otherwise" is an unacceptable position. If you'd like to try to change someone's mind, I recommend talking to your own government officials about helping to find a path to peace.
