I’ve been pretty stressed recently, due to changes at work, being a dad and not really being able to run which is usually how I cope.

I rode motorcycles for years but sold my last in about 2018 as it wasn’t getting used. However I’ve always missed it, could use my own transport and want a bit of a project to distract me.

So this week I bought a lightly crashed BMW R1150RT. It’s getting delivered some time in the next few days. 😁

@cablespaghetti congrats! I'm sure that's going to be "a bit" of a project at that price?

Ok, stereotypes are silly, but what if, in this French village, the most visible business actually is the wine merchant?

And the pharmacy across from the town hall has a big poster in the window on addressing erectile dysfunction?

fedops,

@slothrop I like how some people cast all the BS aside and concentrate on what really matters.

I've been digging in the rabbit hole for a couple of days, and I've already found some already familiar -and quite annoying- bits similar to the ones you can find in tech (programming, sysadmining, hardware and software choices...) For example, variations on the unsolicited advice "You shouldn't [buy/use] $stuff, that's garbage, use $betterStuff instead". Human nature is what it is and it just switches context I guess. :P

fedops, (edited )
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array yeah I agree. I used to be involved with the tinkering (and riding obvs.) m/c community a lot back in the days of Usenet and rec.motorcycles. It's exactly the same as any other specialized niche groups. Lots of friendly helpful people, some over-the-top religious believes, lots of BS.

In the end it's fine to take in what's available but you'll have to make your own experiences and find what works for you.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array speaking of unsolicited advice 😄 here's some I have for you.

You have no friends on the road. Trucks, cars, busses are heavy dangerous things who try to kill you. Always be aware of your surroundings and get into a habit of thinking for them as well as yourself.

Your crumple zone is your gear or, failing that, your body. Ride with a decent helmet, and proper jacket, pants, and boots. Even when it's hot.

Practice cornering and braking. Controlling your bike is 100% on you.

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array yeah, posing is for teens and twens. 😂

I also did everything on two wheels; commuting, shopping, going on vacation. I think it's the best way to learn riding in all kinds of conditions, making you more proficient. The equipment choices reflect that. The sunny Sunday posers are just a different breed. 😄

Work commuting in my city is beyond terrible. $dayJob is ~12 km from home and close to the beach, so with summer closing in the public bus is comically crowded with tourist and holiday industry workers to the point that I have missed them regularly because they just can't take more passengers... And it's just May, from June to September this will only be worse. Add the crazy heat and lack of space to just breathe there and you have a recipe for nightmares... 1/n

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@array sorry to hear that. It's the same for many of the "sun islands". On the one hand tourism is a major source of income, but it's also a major source of inequality, waste, and hassle.

That is a really cute bike! I've always liked the classic cafe racers and even the copies of the copies preserve the style and character.

Customer: we don't like your networking equipment you put in to connect all your stuff. Chose something else.
Us: it's our standard stuff, well proven, and we can manage it. But ok. What do you want instead?
C: we don't know. But Gartner say it's no good.
Us: [Gartner don't know an ass from an elbow]
Us: no seriously, what DO you want?
C: just replace it.
Us: how about we connect to your network and then you manage it?
C: no.

Sigh.

@fitheach @simon_brooke @giantspacesquid do any of you sell your trees?

Thinking of getting a piece of land cleared to convert into a pasture with fruit trees. That means removing 300 dense-stand silver firs; 40 years old, average 40 cm breast height diameter and 15m high.

The offer I've gotten is 5 Eur/tree, for thermal use. This is ~8% of what firewood goes for, or 10% of the equivalent cost in heating oil. But it saves me min. 5 years of work and still leaves me with 700 trees.

Thoughts?

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tay0 yes, same as spruce or red pine. They are pretty skinny though which means lots of sawing for not much lumber. They'd be more valuable in 20+ years but only if the stand is thinned so they stop growing taller and instead grow fatter.

Which is actually what I think of doing instead. Cut out every third row leaving the rest more valuable. But given what I can do manually that means not much of a pasture for the foreseeable future.
@fitheach @simon_brooke @giantspacesquid

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@simon_brooke if I had a sawmill I suppose selling dimensional lumber could be an option. Much as I would like that it'd mean the investment plus even more work.
@fitheach @giantspacesquid

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@edavies thermal use would be either firewood or wood pellets. That's the lowest class of wood, basically meaning useless for everything else. Either nice wood but too small for sawing into dimensional lumber. Or undesirable (knotty, spalted, crooked). And also includes shredding all twigs and branches for pressing into pellets.
@Tay0 @fitheach @simon_brooke @giantspacesquid

fedops,
@fedops@fosstodon.org avatar

@Tay0 fully covered in needles and a veritable death zone for lack of light and water.

No livestock as I don't live close by and go up every day.

Thinned out it would be good for grazing sheep or cows, but the idea for the orchard is to keep it completely wild with an intact ecosystem. Cut grass twice yearly to prevent bush growth. I want to invite a neighbor beekeeper to place his hives there to collect off the wildflowers and also the fruit trees.
