Bluebells and Birdsong at Happy Valley

Happy Valley is a joy to visit at any time of the year, but always in May the bluebells are astounding. This magical place is filled with bird song and trickling water where you can relax and just take in the sights and sounds. As part of Scotland's Year of Stories, Martin Laird made a series of films for Orkney News Ltd 'Orcadian Stories' .

This is the story of people being harmed and dying, not through Russian carelessness but through a deeply cynical offensive, with the civilian body count so high that we can come to no other conclusion than this: it isn’t collateral damage. Making life unliveable is the entire point of the campaign

St. Peter’s, Kirkhouse

By Bernie Bell Kirkhouse, South Ronaldsay, is one of our regular places to visit and walk – either along the Bay Or in the Kirkyard We’ve never managed to be there when the Kirk was open but our neighbour, Steve, recently visited the church and sent us some photos of the interior which made us very keen to be able to go inside one day - I can almost feel and smell the wood and the polish.

Community Strength at Stromness

It was a Sunday afternoon filled with pipes and drums resonating around the town of Stromness. What marked 5th May 2024 as special, however, was the outpouring of community love and support for the RNLI. The RNLI launched its first lifeboat in 1824 and since then the charity, run by volunteers, has saved more than 146,000 lives at sea. "24 hours a day, 7 days a week, the RNLI is ready to save lives."

Something Different in Stenness

By Bernie Bell Since the Neolithic, people have come on Pilgrimage to the sites and stones of Orkney. Today’s believers are still drawn here – sometimes to get married in an extra-ordinary place. ‘Heksmoar’ in Stenness ...provides all things Pagan, including hand-made handfasting cords. The shop is the brain-child of Ann Moar, who also intends to set up a small lending library of spiritual/mystical literature.
