I'm honestly a bit taken aback by some of the proponents of #Threads
Not by them carrying water for #Meta mind you, that's their prerogative, more so by the way they go about it
I've seen the most strained analogies and the most contorted arguments being uttered by people that I know are too smart and too honest to utter things that are so incongruous with their own standards of intellectual honesty
I don't understand the concerns you are mentioning. #meta is not controlling #activitypub or #mastodon. #mastodon can always continue doing it's thing as it is now. No downside.
But if #threads really integrates with #activitypub, then a huge number of users (who just want something easy which works for them) will joing the #fediverse. Huge upside.
If #mastodon et al don't support such new extensions, then it would be the same as it is now without #meta. Upside, but no downside.
It seems to me that what you are really afraid of is proprietary solutions being more successful with users than open standards and open source software.
I think the most compelling reasons to defederate from #Meta boil down to one fact: they are seeking to profit from interacting with us.
And based on that, we can propose a consistent policy to defederate from any server that seeks to profit.
For corporate-run fedi servers, I believe rule encompasses the concerns about enabling fascism or disrespecting privacy or failing to moderate their users, since those behaviors are motivated by the corporation’s need to manufacture value for stakeholders at everybody else’s expense.
We’ve seen enough examples of profit-driven social media to conclude that they end up doing deplorable shit.
#project92
@tux The privacy problems of #threads / #meta are not because of the data shared via #activitypub, but because of all the personal data #meta is collecting and using from it's users (including browse history and medical data).
@johummel Well well well ...there is a difference between sharing data which you intentionally want to share with the public versus expoiting private personal data (like your browsing history, health data etc. etc.)
Putting this into the same bag is hugely deceptive.
The official Mastodon app is doing something new which is potentially very dangerous to the existence of Mastodon and the Fediverse.
The official Mastodon app now prompts users to join mastodon.social by default, when previously it prompted them to pick a server. If you're new this may sound harmless, but let me explain.
This sounds plausible, but smells a little bit like a nerdy discussion of #linux#kernel developers opposing a nice UI features because it does not fit into their latest cool philosophy of quantum kernel memory management - while normal people are just staying with Windows because it is easier to use.
What I meant is: People have the choice between @windows and @linux, and most people choose @windows because it offers are more pleasent user experience for their use cases.
(Including me, mainly using Linux for servers/cloud etc. and Windows for desktop.)
I don't think people are forced or stupid or so. People are just lazy. And people prefer having a nice user experience.
It's not sufficient to work technically. It matters enormously how easy something is to use.
