In the race for "Boringest assholes alive", I've got $50 on "Dudes who are still posting mad about Brie Larson". To place, not to win; the competition IS fierce.

@LeviKornelsen As much as I agree with the overall sentiment, they have a ways to go before catching up with the guys that are still mad about Jane Fonda...

What game was hardest for you to wrap your head around? I've seen a lot of people struggle with Mage and Burning Wheel, as examples. What about you? What was hard for you to grasp? Or what has been hard for your players in the past?

@rivetgeek @thoughtpunks PbtA for me too. It's pretty much second nature to me now, but it took a long time for me to get there.

Ran a session of Classic for our Game Day yesterday, complete with random character generation at the table.

None of the six players rolled for a ship, and the group was heavily combat oriented, so the adventure itself was a simple ticket to escort a negotiator through a warzone. All six players got a chance to do their thing, and seemed to have a great time.

    @LeviKornelsen I'm curious what you're going to replace Google Drive with. Moving away from cloud storage, or have you found a replacement service?

    @passenger @nuthatch @danluu What we're really bad at is testing code. I see that screen, and the first thing I think is "someone didn't let QA do their job."

    As I make my way up towards 50, saying "I don't take any medications" is coming with a louder and louder implicit "yet".

    @LeviKornelsen at 47 I took none, at 53 I take a nightly cocktail of pills. Just added a new one to deal with a side effect of one I was already taking :p

    People complaining about Capitalization for Emphasis in role-playing texts don't understand that their particular Prescriptive Prohibition is just a recent fad in the English language.

    One that's clearly losing ground.

    It's like complaining that someone isn't wearing a Hypercolor shirt or doesn't know all the lyrics to "Ice Ice Baby."

    fulminata,
    @fulminata@dice.camp avatar

    @epidiah I was taught to double space after periods, and to always put punctuation inside the quote marks of a quote. Also, that I didn't need to use the Oxford comma (that last one was journalism school, but still...)

    We learn a lot of good things in school, but a few useless things as well.

    @LeviKornelsen Not entirely sure what you mean here, but games that try to emulate the media that have worked for me are ones that have tweaked the mechanics to fit the media. Star Trek Adventures and Alien are two big successful examples.

    Where it fails is where they try to shoehorn in mechanics that have nothing to do with the media, like the level mechanics of the Transformers RPG.

    Assuming you can parse this:

    "This game captures the feeling of [this other thing, such as a piece of media] that I enjoy, and thereby some of my enjoyment of [the other thing] is applied to the game."

    Two questions:

    1. Have you experienced this?

    2. Have attempts to evoke this ever interfered with your enjoyment of a game?

    fulminata,
    @fulminata@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen

    1. Yes. Most notably with the original Star Wars RPG, and the more recent Star Trek Adventures, but I could list more.

    2. Also, yes. @rivetgeek mentioned the Palladium Robotech RPG. A more recent example for me is The Expanse RPG. I think I might like it just fine if it wasn't The Expanse, but I don't like level based design for most IPs, and certainly not for The Expanse.

    @fulminata@dice.camp avatar

    @rivetgeek @LeviKornelsen I am not a huge fan of the character art, but it is more true to the books than some of the casting was for the show.

    This is a find-your-people post for TTRPG folk.

    Please respond by saying what sorts of TTRPG things you're pretty likely to either talk about or respond to if you see them.

    This can be a list of games (D&D! Tribe 8! Fate!) or categories (the weirdest of indie stuff! NSR! Anything PBtA!), topics (Worldbuilding! Publishing!), stuff you're making, meta-commentary (The State Of The Industry), and so on.

    Then maybe share, and if the replies are building up, check them for new people.

    In no particular order, and probably leaving out a bunch:

    I also have an interest in design topics like: , , , , but mainly as an observer.

    Finally, I help run a local gaming group and am interested in discussing running and promoting such groups.

    The other company that had me extremely cranky was Chaosium, for getting in on crypto digital collectibles.

    Others have since pointed out that they got into it before it was truly obvious that crypto was so utterly scammy, and they've been trying hard to get on the right side of AI stuff, basically talking me down out of a forever-grudge, so I'm only mildly grumpy at this point.

    One day I will almost certainly give in to my terrible, unseemly thirst for the three-book RuneQuest slipcase.

    @fulminata@dice.camp avatar

    @LeviKornelsen I had a bad experience with, I think, Jason Durall on Facebook (it was one of the new faces at Chaosium, and finding things in Facebook is impossible). I would have abandoned the game, but my wife loves the non-traditional setting, so I've kept up with it and am prepping a new campaign using Jonstown Compendium material.

    The NFT thing was unsurprising to me, but they surprised me with the stance on AI art. They could still use some more diversity at Chaosium.

    Looking for advice on best ways to make it clear that our local gaming group is LGBTQ+ friendly.

    I help run a gaming group in a deep red state, and given recent events both national and local, we want to make it clear that we strive to be a safe space.

    Specifically looking for wording we can add to group and event descriptions.

    fulminata,
    @fulminata@dice.camp avatar

    @SJohnRoss @cavedueller We're not shy of being explicit. Unfortunately, there is a local gaming organization that uses "safe and inclusive" language, that is in fact run by fundamentalists that mean they don't exclude bigots.

    This is one of the reasons we want to be better at communicating that we are an actual safe space, without getting confrontational.
