This happens to everyone, right.

You put something down, and it disappears in to some sort of worm hole. You search everywhere, and it is not there. Even checked CCTV to confirm nobody nicked it off the door step.

I put all my tools away, where they belong, but the wire cutters are not there, or anywhere else.

I ended up buying more, and amazingly the originals have not magically appeared 5 seconds later, as you would think!

I thought I would need wire cutters to open this packaging though.

I don't know what to think when I got excited about a copy of this turning up for £6. It's been on my amazon wishlist for ages, but £60 was a bit of an ask.

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@philpem that’s an excellent price…still £55 according to my Amazon account

@mw1cgg @philpem 😳Oh that was a bargain!

Could any of you fine folk recommend a meter I could plug into a UK mains socket that would give a reasonably accurate voltage reading? Possibly also to accept a device and measure its power usage? Want to see how under/over voltage my supply is as my EV matt:e is tripping out. Thanks!

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV I have one of those plugs as well for individual power monitoring…and it works very well. I also have a few Tapo P110 devices which include power monitoring - which also work well. For the overall house feed (plus some major circuits) I use CT clamps feeding an OpenEnergyMonitor setup. That also watches the house mains feed voltage

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV the Tapo’s tend to be the easiest to use here for individual appliance monitoring, as my wife had me set them up in Google Home, so she can just ask for a device to turn off and on; case in point the Christmas tree lights. The data can be exported via their app as well

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV @M0PWX @M0YNG lol! My wife would have a Christmas tree up all year if she could. In fact last year she insisted she keep her table top mini tree all year😂 (but she changed the topper to something less Christmassy)

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV @M0YNG the tapo doesn’t monitor voltage fluctuations unfortunately- you need something like https://shop.openenergymonitor.com/single-phase-6-channel-energy-monitoring-emontx-v4/ & their RaspPi base station as well (to run the data storage and graphing) https://shop.openenergymonitor.com/emonbase-433mhz-rfm69spi/ . I then have another 10 or more temperature sensors capturing inside and outside temps, and water flow temps in the central heating system

@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV @M0YNG the OpenEnergyMonitor software is good for working out relative energy costs on a few different Octopus Energy tariffs. We’re fairly heavy electricity users, and in November so far we’ve used around 752kWh. On Go (which is a flat 7.5p/kWh between 00:30 & 04:00, and 31.15p at other times) we would have averaged 24.5p/kWh. On their Agile tariff (variable every 1/2 hr slot across the day), we’ve averaged 16.5p/kWh for the month so far with daily adjustment of heating to optimise cost

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV we don’t have solar capability (yet - we’re in a conservation area and installing panels seems ‘challenging’). Last year we used Go as we had a good fixed price deal…but Go changed to be non-fixed price (I think), and I felt confident that some daily usage tweaks could make Agile a better option for us. Rates like tonight/ tomorrow help…we have resistive underfloor heating - and I run it overnight and it keeps every warm & toasty for 24 hours

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV this is the stuff that Mastodon is great at - technical and helpful

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV I just plugged my one in and this is what it shows when the plug is on but nothing is plugged into it. The voltage does fluctuate as well…so I presume this would be available for HA to track (I haven’t tried that though)

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0YNG @M0CUV Ha! your’s seems to be reporting a reasonable voltage- in fact exactly what I would expect. At 258-ish volts, mine seems a bit high…🤔

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@m1geo @M0YNG @M0CUV the last year has seen our voltage being reasonably stable…no major excursions out to those levels

Histogram of a year’s worth of voltage readings with a peak around 232V

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV @m1geo @M0YNG Collecting assorted datasets is a geek’s prerogative👌. My wife has developed the skill to just roll her eyes and ignore me now😊. I just deliver her requests in return - Christmas tree lights that turn on via voice control; lighting that turns on and off automatically triggered by movement etc

According to a quick skim of their catalog, NIST does not sell a SRM of swamp mud.

This is a problem. How are we supposed to have bog-standard stuff if we don't have a standard bog to calibrate them against?

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@azonenberg a few sludges and sediments…but none from swamps. The SRM business was covered in this fascinating Veritasium video https://youtu.be/esQyYGezS7c?feature=shared

A bit of today! This is a General Instrument 824-566-000 ANIC (Asynchronous Network Interface Controller). This box sits in the headend PC and converts SCSI (!) to asynchronous (Manchester coded 13.98kbaud) Jerrold DataChannel data. It's an embedded 286 PC...!

@philpem the pricing is definitely oof! But needs must as the devil drives! I’d normally order from Mouser etc and buy a few other items and wait 3 days. What’s even more annoying is that Poloulu sell them in packs of 4 for the same price…but there’s no local Poloulu store anymore 😕

M0CUV, to Nissan
@M0CUV@mastodon.radio avatar

How, exactly, is Nissan (allegedly) collecting all this personal data about me? Their system can barely function to tell me the charge level of my car, let alone collecting anything juicy…

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV lol! Nissan collecting data on ‘sexual activity’ made me laugh. I know seats have some quite complex sensors that could send data back on the dial home feed (including the potential for heart rate monitoring, weight etc)…but what are they thinking!

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV the change in mobile technology is too fast for cars that may last 20 years+ - our early connected vehicles had 3G cell modems…barely capable of anything. However I don’t enable the 4G/5G ‘dial home’ modems in my cars…imho too much data going back now 🫥

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV the scale of the data hoard is quite far reaching…and I’m pretty sure this article hasn’t captured all the ‘interesting’ data the automotive OEMs would find interesting. Makes the data spray from Samsung TVs look minuscule by comparison! https://spectrum.ieee.org/tesla-autopilot-data-scope

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV IMOH all new cars from the last few years gather pretty much similar data already…even down to whether the vehicle was serviced in a local ma&pa garage with a non OEM part. As we move to EVs and the OEMs start to flog more software upgrades etc, this amount of data will grow even more I suspect

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV I had a Panda and Cinquecento…so I know how you feel. I work in the industry and I feel very wary about the data gathering…

I’ve watched this Bill Bailey sketch a few times now, it still cracks me up. I thought I’d act on it, after finding myself automatically responding with “not too bad, all things considered”. Now if you ask me how things are, they’re Awesome. So, what do I have to do each day to get to ?

@M0CUV my wife is always so much more upbeat than I am…she always says she’s awesome or fantastic. No wonder she’s a great people leader … whereas I love to interact with electronics, computers and code more😂

g7vkq,
@g7vkq@mastodon.radio avatar

@M0CUV Absolutely! And frequently they do! I notice I’m much happier when my brain has a problem to solve…which I can mull over whilst I do other activities. A design or technical challenge seems to keep my brain from worrying about the minutia and daily grimble that can otherwise get you down
