Outline of SQL tutorial has hit the "100 queries" goal https://gvwilson.github.io/sql-tutorial/ still have at least six diagrams to draw, and would like appendices showing how to use DuckDB to do the same things (easy) and how to use permissions etc. in PostgreSQL (hard because setup and re-run). Help always welcome: please see https://gvwilson.github.io/sql-tutorial/contributing/ for the contributors' guide.

@gvwilson I tried some of those with duckdb and discovered that sqlite will convert char to float implicitly but duckdb will error. Select '1'+1 for example...

geospacedman,

@gvwilson Would probably go for geopackage files, and SQL via the GDAL library... Will think about it when I get some time...

@gvwilson Yeah still trying to find a nice duckdb CLI/IDE. Will update you when I get time... Time...

doing my corp internet security training and I'm reminded of a few stories.

CW: Old man telling stories follows.

in 1998ish I was a grad student. Even though I was in the ag Econ department I was interested in all things tech. So I learned about promiscuous mode on ethernet and ran some random sniffing software. At that point authentication for POP email was not encrypted, but was plain text. in one day of sniffing I had email creds for everyone on my floor.

Ugh 😤 ip command is the most significant change in Linux since they deprecated the ifconfig, a standard command on unix-like systems such as macOS, freebsd, and others. Check out my ip command guide https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-ip-command-examples-usage-syntax/ for more info.

@nixCraft "ifconfig" shows packet/error counts for RX/TX. Can't see that for "ip". Can it?

I could not remember printenv command today, but I had chatGPT open, so I blurted "print all environment variables" which is what I would type in Google. So, well, it did. It printed the environment variables of the virtual machine it has access to for running python code.

geospacedman,
@geospacedman@mastodon.social avatar

@Cmastication that's not its actual environment, but one put together from what it's seen on the internet. Its seen things you people wouldn't believe...

This is magic, and auto installed in seconds on GitHub Actions, which runs all the code in the literate programming system Quarto, renders the results, and deploys them. Technology for reproducible research has come a long way over last decade, and it's accelerating 🚀

geospacedman,

@robinlovelace except the environment you are running on, GitHub, is the antithesis of reproducible.

geospacedman,
@geospacedman@mastodon.social avatar

@robinlovelace Even at the moment your analysis might not fit in the Github free tier allowances, which means you are imposing a cost on others reproducing your results. Add in that its closed source, single supplier, someone else's computers etc. Gitlab and Gitlab-CI can be self-hosted.

If you use dailies (let's be clear; their appeal to the snakes is severely misguided tho may bring in 💰) and are missing ligatures (like all sane coders would)…

i use https://github.com/anthonynorth/rscodeio for my RStudio theme and modified it, thusly:

.ace_scroller {
 font-variant-ligatures: discretionary-ligatures;
 font-feature-settings: "dlig" 1;
}

to get the attached with the awesome new Monaspace fonts.

geospacedman,
@geospacedman@mastodon.social avatar

@hrbrmstr just remember that ligatures are fine for personal use but never use them in screenshots of code examples.

OK, I have a somewhat baffling (to me) Mastodon question. How do I link to a thread?

I want to link to a fantastic thread by @mhoye - but if I link to the first post in that thread - https://mastodon.social/@mhoye/111335603309582734 - I get a page with a single post on it and other people's replies, with no indication it's part of a larger thread from the same author

Am I missing something here?

geospacedman,
@geospacedman@mastodon.social avatar

@simon @mhoye I often see that the answer to any Mastodon "How do I do this link/reference thing to a toot that seems trivial and works on Twitter" question is "You can't do that, and that's by design to stop [insert abusive social media behaviour trope here]".

How disturbing are the trends in modern academic publishing business (especially the aggressive MDPI)? https://english.elpais.com/science-tech/2023-10-31/public-funds-being-swallowed-up-by-scientific-journals-with-dubious-articles.html
Bottom line is: aim at quality first i.e. better write 1-2 quality full-length papers, than multiple fast-tracked 1/3 length papers; spam aggressive e-mail invites; insist on open peer-review and customized (broken-down) APCs (any round-number APC e.g. 2500 USD comes directly from a greedy businessmen's mind NOT from a professionally worked-out cost-recovery calculus).

geospacedman,
@geospacedman@mastodon.social avatar

@underdarkGIS @tomhengl I think he means mark them as spam and get on with your day. It's what I do with all the "invitation to write for journal of something I have no expertise in" emails I get.
